President's Message
Kelly Binyon
President's Report No 23
Hello Everyone,
What a beautiful weekend weatherwise - let's hope it stays that way.
Last week's meeting was well patronised and we had 2 guest speakers - Assistant Governor Judy Beasley and Mayor of the Surf Coast Shire - Cr. Rose Hodge.
AG Judy gave us an update of what has been happening in our Group of Clubs and spoke about potential collaboration for an International Project supplying Sky Hydrants to schools in the Phillipines.
International Director Robyn has brought this project to the Board and we will be discussing our Club's involvement over the coming months. AG Judy also reflected on what our Club has done over the last 6 months and we have been busy!
It made me feel very proud of what we can achieve when we all focus our energy and talents into worthwhile activities. Keep up the great work members (and our trust helpers)!
Mayor Rose then presented to the room and her topics covered a wide range of issues - with particular focus on recognising our indigenous place names throughout the Shire. I for one did not know that Modewarre was an indigenous name meaning Musk Duck, Connewarre means Black Swan or that Geelong is derived from the Wathaawurrung word Djillong,
There was also a robust Q&A session at the end and it was good to hear lots of questions from the floor - even the curly ones - and the Mayor handled them all with her usual grace and diplomacy. We should be very grateful that we have the opportunity to meet with our elected officials and discuss matters important to each and every one of us. Unfortunately some of the countries that Rotary has projects in do not afford their citizens the same. We are indeed the lucky country.
Tonight is all about Youth and we will have a presentation from our Inbound Exchange Student Yi-Ting Lin from Taiwan, an overview of programs by Youth Services Director Ben and Host Parent Kelly (that'd be me!).
Early last Tuesday morning, I presented on Organ Donor Awareness at Geelong Central Rotary Club breakfast meeting speaking to about 15 members about the Mary Elliott Legacy.
Stressing the need to encourage family members to register & have the discussion about Organ Donation A young 23 year old man called Isaiah attended as visitor to the Club that morning . He lives in Portarlington & is undertaking Community Development at the Gordon & just thought he would come along to hear about Rotary !! After I had demonstrated to Club members, how simple it was to register by logging onto www.donatelife.vic.gov.au with just your Medicare number & date of birth - Isaiah announced that he had registered already Made me think about the way young people communicate with instant use of technology !

Expressions of Interest to Host Rotarians from USA.
In the November issue of District Governor Rosanne’s Monthly News there was a call for expressions of interest to host Rotarians from USA as part of the Rotary Friendship Exchange program.
Rotary Friendship Exchanges are a great way to meet new people in new countries. Out bound and In Bound Friendship Exchanges are normally for 2 weeks with a team of 10 – 12 people – usually Rotarians, who travel to another country and stay with Rotarians and visit their District and their Rotary Clubs. Generally teams stay 3 to 4 days in each place and the host Rotary Club members organise for the team to visit places of interest and attend Rotary meetings or attend Rotary functions.
At the moment two Rotary Districts have expressed an interest in a Friendship Exchange with D 9780:
D 5060 North Central Washington, USA and British Columbia Canada in Okanagan Valley.
D 5970 Iowa USA
At our Board meeting on18 November Board members supported the notion of being a host club. Planning is in the early stages but the Chair of D9780 Rotary Friendship Exchange, Gail Barrett, needs at least 4 host clubs for each incoming team – 8 host clubs all up. Timing is yet to be determined and potential host clubs are asked to nominate when would be the most suitable time for the team to visit their area.
If anyone is interested to host 2-4 visitors for 3-4 days please contact Robyn O’Loughlin or Lesley Shedden and we will see if we have sufficient capacity to offer Torquay as a host club. If you would also note what month in 2020 you would be able to host that would be helpful.
Our Farmers are in crisis. Record-high heat and record-low rain mean their livestock is starving. Their crops are dying. Many farmers and their families are suffering in silence.
The Rotary Clubs of Australia have partnered with Channel 9, Great Northern Brewing Co. and Bendigo Bank to raise funds and in-kind donations for the drought affected communities across Australia. The appeal is administered by Bendigo Bank’s charitable arm, Community Enterprise Foundation™. Click the image below for full details of this appeal

Melbourne has been announced as the host city for the 2023 Rotary International Convention, the largest conference secured this century for Victoria.
Melbourne is a Big Events City! Set to deliver over $88 million to the Victorian economy, the Convention is the most valuable conference ever won for the state, with the four-day event anticipated to attract more than 20,000 Rotarians from around the world. The global spotlight will be on Melbourne and how we present ourselves to the world.
The Convention will take place 27-31 May 2023 using superb venues; Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. All activities and events are within the Heart and Soul of Melbourne. Over 7000 hotel rooms over 50 properties across Melbourne. Our transport plan uses our famous trams, ferries and buses to quickly and easily move delegates between venues, hotels, event and restaurants. And of course, Melbourne is a very walkable city with many interesting routes and laneways to tantalise visitors.
You are invited to contribute to a project to support Purple House, an organisation that provides dialysis services to remote indigenous people in Central Australia.
Purple House is an innovative Indigenous-owned and run health service operating from its base in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Now operating 16 remote clinics and a mobile dialysis unit called the Purple Truck, Purple House is getting patients back home so that families and culture can remain strong.
DG Rosanne Kava has asked us all to provide any of the following items to our Assistant Governor, Judy Beasley, who will pass them on to Purple House CEO Sarah Brown for delivery to clients in remote communities
Soaps, shampoos, conditioner, body lotion and toiletries including combs, brushes, toothpaste and tooth brushes (no sanitary items as they are sourced elsewhere).
Special recognition will be given to the Club that provides the top contribution.
Think about volunteering to assist Purple House if you are travelling in central Australia, eg to assist in building a new Purple House in Coober Pedy, or as a nurse on the Purple Bus or one of the Purple Houses. Click the image for more details or CLICK HERE to contact Purple House or phone 08 8953 6444.
Please give your donated items to Lesley Shedden or Mike Reed at any of our Monday meetings.
