President's Report No 16

Did we or didn’t we have fun last week…?!

I don’t know about you but having the Crazy Trivia as well as the Crazy Hat night was so much fun, in fact we should have a Trivia night regularly, in fact I’m pretty sure that Catherine would love to join us again too. Although I think we should have a little less of a gap between the questions and more of them, saves the temptation to use the digital ‘encyclopedias’...!

“Well done” goes out to the winners of the Crazy ‘Lift the Lid’ hat competition and they were:
Best ‘Themed’ Hat - Chris ‘Amigo’ Sims
Best Handcrafted Hat – Lesley ‘fresh flowers from her garden’.
Most Outrageous Hat – Amanda ‘how many do you own Mandy.?!).
Best Pet Hat – Bruce Smith ‘Misty the British Blue Shorthaired cat’.
See Maggie’s total list of winners and prizes in this Bulletin….

We managed to raise just over the $1,000 goal by raising $1,356 that will now go to Australian Rotary Health, so well done to all those that generously donated to help make this figure possible.

A huge THANK YOU too to the very generous people who donated all the prizes given out not only to the winners of the ‘Crazy Hat Brigade’ but to the winners of the Crazy Trivia quiz.

I had the pleasure of attending Ray Robilliard’s 50th Anniversary of Service in Rotary from the Rotary Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds, on Wednesday which turned out to be a lot of fun and a lot of reminiscing too.  He had a lot to do with our very own Mary Elliot and worked with her tirelessly promoting Organ Donation and still their work carries on through in and around the District. If you missed the meeting but would like to see the presentation then follow the link later in this bulletin.

This week we will be entertained by Rotarian Paul Moran on how we can start to think about ‘gettin’ outta here’ with his presentation on Travel and Tourist opportunities in Victoria, I will look forward to that.

That’s it from me, so stay safe and have a great week.

Expressions of Interest for International Student Support
Rotary Torquay Supporting Deakin International Higher Degree/ Postgraduate Students

Whilst many international students have gone home there are still a large number that are still in Australia for a number of complex reasons. In particular a number of higher degree and postgraduate students, some with partners and children, are doing it tough.

Although individual students circumstances differ in general they are struggling:
·       financially to pay for food, provisions, rent, course fees ...
·       to access or know how to access care packages
·       to access online courses as computer labs are closed
·       with feeling isolated and disconnected from the community
·       concerned about their future studies and career
·       some have a fear of homelessness

The most pressing need for the higher degree students appears to be connection to the community.

RC Torquay is partnering with Deakin University in a program to assist a small number of local international students by an individual Rotary member/family partnering with each Deakin student/family to offer, insofar as is possible, whatever support the student/family requires. Such as:
  •        online communication
  •        care package - food, books, personal items ...
  •        assistance with accessing community services ...

If you are interested and have the capacity to be involved in the partnership program please contact:

#27 Walks for Parkinsons - Join Pete's Pals Fundraiser Event

27 FOR PARKINSON’S

Torquay Rotary Club members have participated in the Parkinson's "WALK IN THE PARK " over  many years now to support Peter Bollen and his family

Unfortunately due to COVID we will be unable to join our own Peter Bollen as we have in recent years however we can join forces with Pete who will again be entering the Fundraising Team , "Pete's Pals"

Please help Pete reach the $1,000 fundraising target by sponsoring the team Sponsor Pete's Pals

27 for Parkinsons will replace the traditional A Walk in the Park event, which cannot be held this year due to COVID-19 community restrictions and ongoing uncertainty over when and how people will be able to gather.

The concept of 27forParkinson’s is simple – we want people to get out and move at their own pace and walk 27 times, over 27 days, in October. The time, the location, the distance is up to you – taking into account any COVID-19 restrictions in place.

The event will officially start on 1 October, but you can register and start fundraising now just like Event Ambassador, the State Member for Lara and former Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren (click on the image to play the video)

“COVID-19 has changed the way we live in 2020,” said Parkinson’s Victoria CEO Emma Collin.

“A Parkinson’s diagnosis is life changing, but being resilient, adapting and arming yourself with knowledge is key to living life to the fullest. As is not facing the journey alone.”

27forParkinson’s aims to create a sense of togetherness within a community who understand and support each other. The event will also be an important fundraiser.

“Virtual fundraising events such as 27forParkinson’s are more important than ever, to raise funds for us to continue to provide the enhanced level of support required for those living with Parkinson’s during these challenging times,” she said.

It's not too late to register or support Pete's Pals, visit the event website.

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.laugh

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
