Rotary Torquay Supporting Deakin International Higher Degree/ Postgraduate Students

Whilst many international students have gone home there are still a large number that are still in Australia for a number of complex reasons. In particular a number of higher degree and postgraduate students, some with partners and children, are doing it tough.

Although individual students circumstances differ in general they are struggling:
·       financially to pay for food, provisions, rent, course fees ...
·       to access or know how to access care packages
·       to access online courses as computer labs are closed
·       with feeling isolated and disconnected from the community
·       concerned about their future studies and career
·       some have a fear of homelessness

The most pressing need for the higher degree students appears to be connection to the community.

RC Torquay is partnering with Deakin University in a program to assist a small number of local international students by an individual Rotary member/family partnering with each Deakin student/family to offer, insofar as is possible, whatever support the student/family requires. Such as:
  •        online communication
  •        care package - food, books, personal items ...
  •        assistance with accessing community services ...
