President's Report No 25

Hi Everyone,

I hope that you have all had a Merry Christmas and a safe & happy New Year.

Our Christmas function was again an enjoyable evening with good fellowship, fun and festivities for all present. It was also great to induct Bruce Turner and his partner Erica into the Club at our final meeting for the year, we look forward to getting to know them both as we roll into 2020.

It goes without saying that our hearts are breaking for the devastation caused by the multiple bushfires burning throughout Australia.  It is pleasing to know that the District Governors have combined to launch an appeal through RAWCS to raise funds for affected areas. Please consider donating as anything over $2 is tax deductible and just under 100% of all monies goes directly to those areas of need.

We have kicked off our busy fundraising calendar with Night Jar Market Car Parking - with a new $5 flat rate charge. As I wasn’t there in the night I’m not sure how well this was received but our members do a terrific job managing this. Well done to all who worked the first night!

Our first meeting is a “BYO” tea to Cosy Corner this coming Monday 6 Jan (please see details further down).

We also have another fun social meeting the following week with RC Grovedale at The Range Curlewis. Prize on offer for the ugliest golf attire!

So we have lots going on both fun & fundraising. Make sure you check the Event Roster to see when you’re required. Upcoming activities include the next three Thursday night Night Jar Markets, Book Fair Set Up, sales days and pack down. Not to forget Cadel Evans Road Race Marshalling (we receive $50 for every person that registers as a Marshall) and BBQ’s galore😄

Hoping to see you all at one function or another.

Stay cool, remain calm and most of all be kind to one another during these times.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians (AUST)

If other members of our club are interested in the caravanning fellowship, Recreational Vehicles Fellowship of Rotary Aust Inc. (RVFR).
I have attached below
  • a copy of the Musters that are planned over the next 12 months,
  • plus a note (below)  about a 6 week muster from Port Augusta (SA) to Toowoomba in Queensland
John Spath (Treasurer, Eastern Zone) is proposing a muster starting in Port Augusta late August 2020 continuing on to Alice Springs and then onto the RVFR AGM which will be held in Toowoomba. The stop in Alice Springs will coincide with the Australian / New Zealand Zone 8 Regional Conference to be held there in September. (ZONE 8: Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands: from District 9455 (Perth to Broome) and including every other District in Australia and the Pacific Islands including our own District 9780, and other South eastern Australian Districts 9790, 9800, 9810, 9820, 9830.) John is asking for expressions of interest. Sounds great!

A reminder that the Rotary International Conference will be held in Honolulu next year and the American RVFR will be attending.

Rotary Friendship Exchange - Expressions of Interest

Expressions of Interest to Host Rotarians from USA.
In the November issue of District Governor Rosanne’s Monthly News there was a call for expressions of interest to host Rotarians from USA as part of the Rotary Friendship Exchange program.
Rotary Friendship Exchanges are a great way to meet new people in new countries. Out bound and In Bound Friendship Exchanges are normally for 2 weeks with a team of 10 – 12 people – usually Rotarians, who travel to another country and stay with Rotarians and visit their District and their Rotary Clubs. Generally teams stay 3 to 4 days in each place and the host Rotary Club members organise for the team to visit places of interest and attend Rotary meetings or attend Rotary functions.
At the moment two Rotary Districts have expressed an interest in a Friendship Exchange with D 9780:
  • D 5060 North Central Washington, USA and British Columbia Canada in Okanagan Valley.
  • D 5970 Iowa USA
At our Board meeting on18 November Board members supported the notion of being a host club.  Planning is in the early stages but the Chair of D9780 Rotary Friendship Exchange, Gail Barrett, needs at least 4 host clubs for each incoming team – 8 host clubs all up. Timing is yet to be determined and potential host clubs are asked to nominate when would be the most suitable time for the team to visit their area.
If anyone is interested to host 2-4 visitors for 3-4 days please contact Robyn O’Loughlin or Lesley Shedden and we will see if we have sufficient capacity to offer Torquay as a host club. If you would also note what month in 2020 you would be able to host that would be helpful.
Robyn O’Loughlin

Rotary International Convention Comes to Melbourne
Melbourne has been announced as the host city for the 2023 Rotary International Convention, the largest conference secured this century for Victoria.
Melbourne is a Big Events City! Set to deliver over $88 million to the Victorian economy, the Convention is the most valuable conference ever won for the state, with the four-day event anticipated to attract more than 20,000 Rotarians from around the world. The global spotlight will be on Melbourne and how we present ourselves to the world.
The Convention will take place 27-31 May 2023 using superb venues; Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. All activities and events are within the Heart and Soul of Melbourne. Over 7000 hotel rooms over 50 properties across Melbourne. Our transport plan uses our famous trams, ferries and buses to quickly and easily move delegates between venues, hotels, event and restaurants. And of course, Melbourne is a very walkable city with many interesting routes and laneways to tantalise visitors.
DG Rosanne's Purple House Project

You are invited to contribute to a project to support Purple House, an organisation that provides dialysis services to remote indigenous people in Central Australia.

Purple House is an innovative Indigenous-owned and run health service operating from its base in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Now operating 16 remote clinics and a mobile dialysis unit called the Purple Truck, Purple House is  getting patients back home so that families and culture can remain strong.

DG Rosanne Kava has asked us all to provide any of the following items to our Assistant Governor, Judy Beasley,  who will pass them on to Purple House CEO Sarah Brown for delivery to clients in remote communities
  • Soaps, shampoos, conditioner, body lotion and toiletries including combs, brushes, toothpaste and tooth brushes  (no sanitary items as they are sourced elsewhere).
  • Special recognition will be given to the Club that provides the top contribution.
Think about volunteering to assist Purple House if you are travelling in central Australia, eg to assist in building a new Purple House in Coober Pedy, or as a nurse on the Purple Bus or one of the Purple Houses.   Click the image for more details or CLICK HERE to contact Purple House or phone         08 8953 6444.
Please give your donated items to Lesley Shedden or Mike Reed at any of our Monday meetings.
