President's Report No 19

I must start my Bulletin report by saying this… It was an absolute pleasure to see so many faces yesterday at the Rotary Club of Torquay’s launch of the very first (and hopefully far from the last) ‘Drive Thru’ BBQ’.  It warmed my heart to see all the hard work done by the guys and gals who manned the BBQ and cooked the most delicious snags, squirted the sauce, took the takings, marshalled the traffic and to still have such a successful day.  The cars were constant and in some cases we even had a couple of traffic jams, in fact a few cars on their way out said it was definitely worth waiting for, and wished us well for the rest of the day, in fact there were a couple of returns for more..!

We sold more than 40kgs of snags which is amazing, and I will leave Mal and Mike to tell you just how much we made and what we sold tomorrow night in their reports.  Well done again everyone who was on duty, your time and effort paid off and was very much appreciated.  Mike worked so hard for this to happen and I think we all need to say a huge THANK YOU to him for a highly successful day.  Together with his team behind him this could be the start of something bigger, so well-done guys.

Now to Congratulations and Commiserations to all of you on such a fun night last week at the ‘Melbourne Cup Eve Race Night’.  Hendo as usual had us all under control and had a great team behind him taking our money and giving some back, if you were lucky to have a horse that came somewhere…!  He even had a special ‘surprise’ guest join us, Mitchell (Mitch) Beer a 30 something year old horse trainer of 4-5yrs and gave us an interesting insight into the horse training and owner Industry.

His father, Les Beer, a successful jockey for over 30yrs, won thousands of races, his sister, Ashlee was also a professional jockey and Mitch literally grew up in the saddle.  He made his debut in Warrnambool at an early age and started his professional career at the age of just 16 at Flemington.  But now he runs his own business and lives and trains horses in and around Albury and The Valley.  His wife is also in the Horse Industry as an Equine vet.

Thank you, Neil, for an amazing job, well done, considering you didn’t have much notice.  The Phantom call was hilarious and well-constructed and very adapt even if it was your speech at your Daughter’s wedding...!! brilliantly done.
The night ended with prizes given to…  Robyn, for Best on field, Alan Hillgrove who looked very dapper in his outfit and Greg for being the Bookmakers Clerk and many thanks goes to Bruce Smith who was the Bookie for the night.
Tomorrow night looks to be a big one as we have a ‘Very’ special guest speaker by the name of Virpi Honkala from the Rotary Club of Raahe, Finland.  She is the Rotary International Director for 2020-2021.  So, log on and have a listen, she sounds like she has a remarkably busy and interesting life, one being she worked as head of surgery at Raahe hospital until her retirement in 2014…!!

So should be an interesting night, I hope you can all make it.
Keep well, keep safe...

President Jan🏅

Our 1st Drive Through BBQ - What a Winner
What a great day! Thank you to all the people who came and purchased a sausage, drink....or both and those who gave us donations at our Drive Through BBQ.
The funds we raised today will help The Rotary Club of Torquay help those in need locally and internationally.
The support we were given from GORCC in allowing us to hold the event and setting up the site, James Taylor and the Surf Coast Times with promotion in the newspaper, Kennards for providing the message sign and of course all of our members for manning the BBQ all contributed the success on the day and what a day it was.

The interest, comments and feedback on Social Media demonstrated the level of support that we received at the BBQ, even the pic posted by Sam McGowan (see below) of one of the kids tucking into a snag in the back of the car.

Thank you all so much for your support particularly Michael Reed for persevering  with the Shire & GORCC to get approval for the event and Mal Slater for mustering the crew and the resources!

Do You Have any Old Tools??
As some of you will have read in the email that you received from Michael Reed last week, Peter & Lynne Codd from The Rotary Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds are collecting unwanted tools to take to the Buchan community. There is an urgency with this as the tools need to be collected by this Tuesday. So if you have some available please contact Peter as per the email below.

Hi All
Lyn and I are taking some tools across to Buchan to place in a Tool Library they have set up for people who lost belonging etc as a result of the fires in January. Buchan had over 20 houses destroyed, and many farmers had sheds, stock and fencing destroyed. Lyn and I lived in Buchan from 1980 - 84
A very good friend who has ‘downsized’ from his place in Ocean Grove to Armstrong Green at Warralily, has provided, some of his old gear such as hammers, powerdrills, tape, hand saws, shovel, hoe, pinchbar, bolts etc,
If anyone has some gear they no longer require if they could let me know and or deliver to me by Tuesday 10 November, that would be great.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Kind Regards
Peter

2020 Melbourne Cup Meeting & Results
It was great to see so many members who had frocked up for the event
With the winners for the best dressed being Robyn O'Loughlin and Allan Hillgrove with special mention to Greg Plumridge AKA Clerk of Course
Our Guest Speaker for the night was Race Horse Trainer Mitch Beer who is the trainer of Hendo's great steed, "Bezos". Mitch gave us a great insight into the world of horse racing, particularly during COVID times.
Neil excelled himself putting together multiple sweeps for "The Cup" and even produced his own Phantom Call. Bookie Bruce Smith was a great assistant even managing the task "Virtually".

You will have received an email from Neil over the weekend with all of the Sweep and Phantom Calls. Please check the email and ensure that you get your entry fees deposited into the Club Bank account as instructed ASAP. If you are unsure please contact Neil.

A great job again by Head of Fun_raising Hendo

Changing Futures Through Medical Care And Training
In Australia and New Zealand, we often take it for granted that if we ever need medical care, we will be treated quickly and effectively by highly qualified doctors, nurses, surgeons and other specialists.
But right next door in the Asia Pacific region, a lack of resources combined with limited training means people with repairable conditions are often not treated fast enough or well enough – if they are treated at all.
The numbers are almost impossible to grasp.
An estimated 143 million people each year go without surgical attention they urgently need, according to the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. More than 99 million of those cases are in Asia and Oceania, where Interplast works.

For many conditions, plastic and reconstructive surgery is the only path to a productive and comfortable life.

If a mum or dad is burned in an accident and not treated adequately, scarring can cause the affected limbs to seize up or fuse to other parts of the body. The right surgical procedure can mean the difference between returning to work, or no longer being able to provide for their family.
A child with a cleft lip or facial tumour may be teased so badly that attending school is impossible. Surgery can make the difference between missing out on an education or fulfilling their potential. For those with cleft palates, surgery can mean the difference between being able to eat properly or suffering from malnutrition, and between speaking with ease or living in silence.
When you donate to Interplast, you contribute directly to changing futures today. Your donation will give someone in need the chance to have life-changing surgery, and it will give someone the opportunity to learn new skills that will benefit their community for years to come.

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley
