President's Report No 15
May I tip my hat to you all and wish you an exceptionally good evening…!
I trust everyone has been well this last week, and what a week it was, weather-wise... although I must admit my garden looks a lot fresher than it has been thanks to a good drink or two.
On behalf of you all I extend our condolences to Peter and Cynthia Bollen on the passing of Cynthia's mother last week. A memorial service is being held at 10am. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions the service will be limited to 20 people only. however if any of you wish to view the service online you can do so at https://funeralwebcast.com.au/live/?v=d3G_SYoZclw
It’s been a busy week with the lead up to Monday night’s fun and games with the ‘Lift the Lid’ (Mad Hat) comp, so many good entries and then of course we’ll be having a what could only be an amazing trivia night too with the Queen of all things trivia and puzzle solving, Catherine Eagleson, joining us to officiate the proceedings..!
There have been so many in the background who have made this night possible. We have really made use of social media to plug this great event i.e... Facebook, the local paper, and through the amazing talents and endless hours of creation, our very own Lesley created a website for anyone to log on to and enter their photos of their hats, and some fur babies hidden under some of them, and to be able to donate with just a click of a button… that easy, even I did it..!! So, a huge THANK YOU to Lesley again for your creative skills.
But wait there’s more… Maggie and John Mac, well they have been relentless in their pursuits in organising the prizes for tomorrow night as well as invitations. Between the two they dressed up in all things Rotary and composed a letter to present to those very generous people who have donated some very special prizes for us, Well done both of you and thank you all for the many hours that have been put into this event as well as the most generous ‘financial’ donations too to make this night a special, fun night.
For those of you that may know Ray Robilliard from the Rotary Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds he is going to celebrate his 50 years of service with Rotary on Wednesday 14th October via Zoom at 7pm and his club has asked that any member who wishes to help him celebrate to please come along. (Please see details in this Bulletin report)
That’s it from me for now, see you all tomorrow for some good fun.

Rotary Torquay Supporting Deakin International Higher Degree/ Postgraduate Students
Whilst many international students have gone home there are still a large number that are still in Australia for a number of complex reasons. In particular a number of higher degree and postgraduate students, some with partners and children, are doing it tough.
Although individual students circumstances differ in general they are struggling:
· financially to pay for food, provisions, rent, course fees ...
· to access or know how to access care packages
· to access online courses as computer labs are closed
· with feeling isolated and disconnected from the community
· concerned about their future studies and career
· some have a fear of homelessness
The most pressing need for the higher degree students appears to be connection to the community.
RC Torquay is partnering with Deakin University in a program to assist a small number of local international students by an individual Rotary member/family partnering with each Deakin student/family to offer, insofar as is possible, whatever support the student/family requires. Such as:
online communication
care package - food, books, personal items ...
assistance with accessing community services ...
If you are interested and have the capacity to be involved in the partnership program please contact:
Our club will be honored to have Rotary International Director Virpi Honkala from the Rotary Club of Raahe, Finland join us during Rotary Foundation month to update us on The Rotary Foundation (TRF) during the current challenging times and into the future.
Virpi Honkala has served Rotary as a Council on Legislation representative, RI president’s representative, RI training leader, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, and Leadership Development and Training Committee member. She has received The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service and The Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award.
We invite anyone who is interested to learn more about TRF to join us for our Zoom Meeting on Monday 9th November at 6.50pm for a 7.00pm start using the following link
Torquay Rotary Club members have participated in the Parkinson's "WALK IN THE PARK " over many years now to support Peter Bollen and his family
Unfortunately due to COVID we will be unable to join our own Peter Bollen as we have in recent years however we can join forces with Pete who will again be entering the Fundraising Team , "Pete's Pals"
Please help Pete reach the $1,000 fundraising target by sponsoring the team Sponsor Pete's Pals
27 for Parkinsons will replace the traditional A Walk in the Park event, which cannot be held this year due to COVID-19 community restrictions and ongoing uncertainty over when and how people will be able to gather.
The concept of 27forParkinson’s is simple – we want people to get out and move at their own pace and walk 27 times, over 27 days, in October. The time, the location, the distance is up to you – taking into account any COVID-19 restrictions in place.
The event will officially start on 1 October, but you can register and start fundraising now just like Event Ambassador, the State Member for Lara and former Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren (click on the image to play the video)
“COVID-19 has changed the way we live in 2020,” said Parkinson’s Victoria CEO Emma Collin.
“A Parkinson’s diagnosis is life changing, but being resilient, adapting and arming yourself with knowledge is key to living life to the fullest. As is not facing the journey alone.”
27forParkinson’s aims to create a sense of togetherness within a community who understand and support each other. The event will also be an important fundraiser.
“Virtual fundraising events such as 27forParkinson’s are more important than ever, to raise funds for us to continue to provide the enhanced level of support required for those living with Parkinson’s during these challenging times,” she said.
It's not too late to register or support Pete's Pals, visit the event website.
Torquay Rotary are now meeting online every Monday (excluding public holidays and the last Monday of every month when a Board Meeting will be held instead ) at 7:00pm. All Members are invited to participate and we have resumed a program including Guest speakers and some fun activities.
Visitors and Guests are very welcome. If you would like to join us please
Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
Whilst we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, our meetings will be held on ZOOM for the time being.
All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.
Club Members and friends also come together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially at the Friday night Happy Hour so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
