Torquay and District Landcare Group  (TDLG) Report to members:

The following report was shared with our club as part of their thank you email for our assistance at the recent Landcare planting:

Dear TDLG Member
What a day! The cold front was expected to come through overnight on Thursday and there was the possibility of a few showers, but no serious rain. Instead the day was sunny and it was only in the latter stages that the wind started to increase and the clouds develop.
TDLG , Surf Coast Shire (SCS), and Torquay Rotary were all ready for the arrival of close to 60 students at Lake Modewarre. The location is the offset planting site for the SCS and this is the third year that Bellbrae have been involved in planting.
Today the task was 420 seedlings,

and if we had time to walk over the older planting sites collecting guards and stakes where the seedlings had well and truly grown larger than them.
TDLG members Graeme and Geoff were also on site and with the Rotary team under the control of Bruce, Rhonda was able to add to the adults assisting with supervision, equipment and quality control. Though there was little need for the latter as the students were very focussed on the correct planting technique particularly after watching a demonstration.
The usual chatter was heard across the site but this time there was no running to the fence line to wave at the Warrnambool /Melbourne train, as work continued on the Grovedale and Waurn Ponds stretch, and buses replaced the trains.
An event like this involves numerous people and organisations, so thank you to
  • the Surf Coast Shire in particular Gabrielle for providing the seedling, guards, stakes and contractors to prepare the site for the planting
  • Torquay Rotary for organising and cooking lunch for everyone. The seconds queue almost being as long as the first round, so everyone was replete.
  • Bunnings for providing the gardening gloves
  • Peachs, we always enjoy the watermelon.
  • TDLG members for being those extra eyes and generally helping out where needed.
  • Bellbrae PS in particular Lachlan, lovely to have you all involved.

For TDLG - 21st August we return to the location with Moriac Primary School students.

Best wishes from your TDLG committee
