President's Message 13 September 2025

Hello
Firstly, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Greg Birchall and Trevor Hall for all their efforts working with Commerce Torquay to produce the Torquay Business Awards.  This wonderful event was held on 5th September and attended by myself, PDG Lesley Shedden, Mike Reed, Bruce Turner, Trevor Hall, Ben Featherston and Gerard Hogan. Our Club sponsored the Not For Profit category which had three finalists – Ocean Mind, Samesyn 2.0 and Surf Coast Environment Group.  The winner was Ocean Mind.
Shout out to one of our newest members, JJ Walia, and the team at Priceline Torquay, who took out the Retail Award
It was a fabulous night and well received by the business community and looks to only become bigger and better.
Well done to Linda and the BBQ warriors who worked the Bunnings Fathers Day BBQ on Friday. Not huge takings but good to be seen in the community!
Last Monday’s meeting was a vocational visit to the Torquay Community House where Coordinator Prue Challis gave us an overview and update of what has been happening at TCH, the challenges they and the community deal with, and what they would like to accomplish in the future.

I was also able to introduce our exchange student, Leonardo Spinoni who arrived from Milan, Italy last Friday night to members and guests.  He spent his first week with us and has now transitioned across to Fenwick family for the next couple of months. We finished off our visit with delicious pizza and great conversations – with Tom Frat engaging with Leo in the mother tongue!

This Monday we are back at Kithbrooke Park and have guest presenters Nick Vivian and Ryan Reed to take us through their adventures participating in the Sh*tbox Rally.
On a personal note I am taking a leave of absence to travel overseas and will temporarily hand over the reins to Vice President Mike Reed and Immediate Past President Bruce Turner.  Anything to do with youth exchange should go via Youth Service Director, Amanda Hough.  I’ll see you all on Cup Eve!
Warm regards,
Kelly

Soft plastics recycling now at Anglesea Recovery Yard

Milk Container Lids Collection

Could all collections of lids please be brought to the meeting?

I have been in touch with Barb Sheehan and organised a trip to the recycling facility, that will turn them into road and playground surfaces.

The Gordon Tafe is a bit overwhelmed at present, so this run of old and smelly lids will not go to them!

Please bring to the meeting in a non-leaky container, preferably sealed. I have used a cheap $2 shop zip bag, but anything you have.

I will talk about regular collections on Monday.

Anglesea Resale Shed

I am trying to assess whether this is possible for us to volunteer to run the Resale Shed on December 20th 2025. I know that is still a little way off but before we accept or decline, I would like to know if anyone is prepared to work there that day. I am aware it is the day before Cowrie – but I wondered if some people may be available. It is a fun day and you do get to chat to loads of people and not be overworked.

If I could possibly get numbers on Monday Night, I would really appreciate it

Thank you, Linda

You're Invited - Torquay Rotary Satellite Club of Music

Have you ever thought about how great music is – to make you feel happy, to bring people together, to celebrate, to remember, to build relationships?

Imagine a community based club with the sole purpose of making people happy through music.

Torquay Rotary plans to create such a club - the Torquay Rotary Satellite Club of Music

Interested?

If you’d like to know a bit more, you’re invited to our first information session to be held on:

Wednesday 17 September 2025

7:00pm

Oak Tree Place, 25 Anderson St, Torquay

Refreshments will be provided.

If you have any questions prior to the event please email either bruce.turner@torquayrotary.org.au or Lesley.shedden@torquayrotary.org.au

Grocery Items - donations please

We would like to commence a collection of Non-Perishable Grocery Items to make a pre-Christmas donation to Torquay Food Aide.
Our aim is to deliver this at the beginning of December, so it can be distributed as the needed.
Please bring your donations to Rotary Meetings at Kithbrooke, where Community Service Director Linda will collect them.

Food Safety Training

Could all those who help with any catering, including barbeques, please complete the Food Handling Topics on this link?
This is to ensure that correct food handling occurs at our barbeques and you understand why it is done

Also, we will be having a training session around setting up the trailer and its layout. This will be held on Thursday 18th September at 5pm at the Rotary Shed. I will continue to remind you about this session.
