Vice President's Message 11 October 2025

I hope you all enjoyed your 'RDO' (Rotary Day Off) last week .... I did! Enjoying some time in The High Country.
It is beautiful up there.

WOW .... what an action packed Monday we had this week.
We were joined by our guest speaker Lara Campbell - Assistant Principal of Surf Coast Secondary College, Lyn Brown, Judy Beasley, Sammy Currie and our Exchange Student Leo.

Thank you Bruce for the welcome and Toast.
Also a huge thank you to Bruce and our Guest Speaker Lara for working through the challenges with the Audio Visual.
The internet at Kithbrooke was 'down'. These two people managed to 'weave their magic' and get Lara's presentation onto the Meeting Room T.V.
Unfortunately there was a couple of people wanting to join online - this was not possible due to no internet.

We did have a lot to get through.
I thank you all for your understanding and 'bearing with me' as we worked our way through all that need attending to including while you were eating.

I had the great pleasure of inducting John Weber into the club.
John is the partner of Judy Rutter.
John has attended many meetings with us as a Visiting Rotarian (From the Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell) and has been involved in a lot of our activities over recent times.
It was an honour to induct him as a member.
Welcome John!

One of our members has had to wear 'the wrong' badge since been inducted.
It was great to be able to present SUE Currie with the her correct name badge!

As has been advertised and emails circulated, Thursday 20th November is the End Polio evening with Jessie Harman.
If you wish to go .... please register, or you will miss out.
Numbers are limited and are filling quite quickly.
Details are on the email I sent last week, and in the bulletin both last week and this.

Next Monday (13th October) is an early afternoon meeting.
Thank you Neil for publishing this meeting early to enable us to get the numbers in and passed onto Our Village and to The Valley Inn for those wishing to eat before hand.

PDG Phil spoke to us about the Interest from the National Trust.
Phil has emailed everyone a few days ago about this.
The information Phil sent has registration details on it - please register yourself if you are going.

PDG Lesley spoke on the End Polio evening.
Lesley also spoke on the Satellite Club.
Both Lesley and Bruce Turner have put a lot of time into this over many months.
We are hopeful this club will get enough interest and prospective members to make it worth pursuing.
Very best wishes with this!

Gerard Spoke to us about a Summer Scavenger Hunt he is proposing we do over our summer period.
Gerard is looking for 4 - 6 helpers to help run this event.
It has the potential to be a very worthwhile project for the club both financially and community exposure.
Please see Gerard and offer your help! (or else you'll be confronted by him!!)

Judy Beasley spoke to us about the Rotary Club of Bayside's Annual Trivia Night.
We are hoping to get at least one (maybe 2?) tables together for this.
It is on Friday 14th November at Christ Church Hall.
There will be a lot more information come about this .... but for now, please note the date and if you are available we'd love to see you there!

I hope you enjoyed your Special Birthday last Tuesday Garth.
A huge Congratulations on your Eightieth, and joining the Octogenarians Club!!

Judy Rutter has a lot of information in the bulletin about recycling of various products.
Please take time to read these and see how you can help the environment.
Judy has offered to help members where she can - please see Judy for any further information.

We have commenced our Summer Period of BBQ's.
We have so many BBQ's scheduled now .... and WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Please folks - Can you see either Richard Hawker or Linda Neale and look at where you can put you name down.

Thank you Lesley for being 'Photographer' for the evening, ensuring we a record and have some images for the bulletin.

How's that for an action packed half hour?

We moved into the Meeting Room, where it was a pleasure for me to introduce Lara Campbell.
Lara's presentation is on The Phonetic Intervention Program.
Lara is very passionate about her teaching, in particular Literacy and what she, the principal and the school staff can do to help students.
They strive to work with each student for the best possible outcome.

The Rotary Club of Torquay has made donations to Surf Coast Secondary College to their Literacy Programs.
Lara oversees this program. She both acknowledged and thanked the club for their generosity.
The funds all go to helping the Literacy program and the teaching of students.

Thank you Lara for your time and a very interesting presentation.
I received a lot of positive feedback from those present, with four members asking for a copy of the slides!

Lara agreed to make her slides available to our members.
I am so grateful to Lara for sending me the slides from her presentation on Monday.
I have included Lara's slides for you - Please Click on this link for the presentation.

Next Monday I will be an apology at Our Village and lunch, as I will be attending and representing our club, at the '100 Years of Rotary in Geelong' ceremony and official function.

Cheers
Michael

Landcare and Boardriders Day - Beetle Mania

Proposed Satellite Club of Music will not proceed

With particular thanks to Bruce Turner, Erika Turner, Maggie Isom, Trevor Pickles and Trevor Brown who have worked with me to put together the proposal and information sessions to determine interest in establishing the Torquay Rotary Satellite Club of Music, we do not have sufficient interest from the community and will not proceed.

Apart from ourselves, we had only one interested community member attend this week's session so have decided it is simply not a goer.

Thank you to everyone for your support.  Perhaps Torquay Rotary will pick up some of the ideas to run as projects.

Collections

Our Village – Final Call

On 13th October 2025 we are having a Vocational Visit to Our Village. We would like to take in a Donation of items to assist them is providing much needed resources to families in need

The items we thought we would try and take are: - new socks and underpants – sizes 1- 16

  • Toiletries – suitable for children through to adults
  • Nappies and wipes
  • If your grandchildren have grown out of clean and  non-stained clothing these would also be appreciated

3,500+ Baby Diapers And Wipes Stock Photos, Pictures ...

Torquay Food Aid – Christmas Donation

I have been for a tour around Torquay Food Aid and now have a list of items that we could donate to them when we complete our collection by the middle of December. At the present time they are spending between $200 and $500 per week just to have enough supplies for those who come in requiring food. The more we can help the better. Maybe put one extra item in your trolley each week and you may not notice that on your weekly shop.

What we can donate to help.

  • Food Items – Canned Soup, canned Spaghetti and baked beans, small cans of fruit, canned corn and tomatoes, tomato sauce, Long Life Fruit juices and milks, canned Christmas Hams, and Biscuits – both savoury and sweet
  • Toiletries, toothbrushes and tooth paste, washing detergent and soaps
  • Thinking of Christmas – chocolate and chocolate biscuits; lollies, soft drink, and maybe bon-bons

Recycling Corner

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Notice how the slogan is carefully worded?
Step one is to reduce your use of materials that are hard to recycle - that is your last option.

So how to reduce?
Please share any of your ideas, but here are a couple of mine:
  • Don't use cling wrap to cover food. Use an upturned saucer or plate; aluminium foil is better, or baking paper. Store food in a glass-based container [does not absorb colours or odours].
  • Refuse extra packaging or soy sauce fish.  Don't take home the problem. Leave as much packaging as you can at the shops. Ask for paper bags, paper straws, ask the shop if there is an alternative product is materials that can go in your recycle bin.
  • Take your own bags or grab a box. Most shops have boxes they can get rid of, if you forgot your bags.
  • Pick your own fruit, not the wrapped ones.  Do bananas really need a bag, when they already have their own skin? Same with oranges and other items that we don't eat the covering. Better to cut up your own veg than buy plastic!
These are just a few ideas. Please write down your best ones and send them to me or hand them to me at a meeting, with your recycling!

Remember to bring your plastic bottle caps and 10c deposit scheme containers to any of our meetings at kithbrooke. I will take them off your hands and get them to the right recycling centre. No waste, no mixed up materials that ruin our council's recycling efforts.

Thank you.
Judy Rutter
