President’s Message
Greetings and welcome. Thank you for joining our online news and updates.
Our Club meeting on Monday night, which was very well attended, gave us the opportunity to hear our guest speaker Tim Carson present a reflection on the Torquay Gilbert Street fire and the effect it had on his business, McCartney Real Estate, along with others located in the mall. It was interesting to gain a little more insight into what happened on the night of the fire. You can read a more detailed report later in the Bulletin.
Thank you to Tim and Murray Middleton (Torquay CFA Captain) who presented information from the CFA perspective. It was also interesting to hear from Tim on real estate trends along with a brief discussion on the Foundation organised by McCartneys.
This foundation flies under the radar and there is some great work going on there with much needed support provided to members of our local community. It was also great to have a couple of past members, Jan Emmett and Alan Anderson, in attendance on the night. We are endeavouring to maintain our connections with all who have been involved with Torquay Rotary and hope to see you both again soon.
Container Deposit Scheme
A little while ago I mentioned that the Rotary Club of Torquay is now registered with the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) and that if you were depositing cans, bottles etc. you can now select our club as a beneficiary of your funds. The return points are located at Bells Beach Brewery and Dunes Village Torquay North. While this is a great scheme which is easy to access and will go a long way to helping our environment along with giving the club financial benefits, there is now a second option for us to recycle our containers.
If you are prepared to collect your containers over a period of time, they can be dropped off in bulk at the CDS Vic Depot, 6 Haworth Street Breakwater. This depot is operated by the Brotherhood of St. Lawrence. See photos below. The benefit of using this depot is that the funds from the recycling go to BSL rather than a private company and at the moment the refund value (10 cents) will go in your pocket, BUT we will investigate registering Torquay Rotary there as well so that you may then elect to direct the refunds to the club. I will provide a little more information at one of our future club meetings.
Hoping to see another great attendance at our next meeting, you should have received your invitation so PLEASE get your registration in on time – by 12.00 pm Friday to assist with our organisation and Emma’s catering.
Updates for members:
Please either return in person (to me at the next meeting) or via email your Member Survey along with an indication of which committee/s you are happy to be part of. By the time you receive this bulletin, if you weren’t at the meeting to receive a hard copy, you will have received an email with the survey attached. If you would like a hard copy let me know and I will provide one.

On this occasion 400 trees were planted with the assistance of Bellbrae Primary students, Landcare, Bunnings and the Surf Coast Shire Council. Supplying and cooking the food for the volunteers was a small contribution to this great community event.
