Well we were advised that our speaker was unable to attend, however, with our Assistant Guv'nor Ross Taylor speaking to us about membership and particularly about Rotary's efforts to address the disaster of Ice addiction in our Community, the evening began well. Thank you Ross for keeping us informed and engaged.
Susan Bashta had come to the meeting to meet our aforementioned speaker, then found herself as our Speaker. Susan spoke articulately with love and compassionate about the challenges and successes of having a child who is Autistic, and the benefit of her son Isaac's Companion Dog Charlie. More about Susan, Isaac and Charlie later.
Next week we have the CEO of the Surf Coast Shire Keith Baillie speaking to us. We warmly welcome Keith and look forward to meeting him as our new Village Chief.
We also have our Board meeting next week, so please send us any ideas or queries to be tabled.
Ride the Bellarine – will take place with a date yet to be fixed, depending on other events in Geelong.Insurance cover is now in place. The committee seeks a PR / Marketing ‘guru’ to assist.
Team membership – Rotary Clubs in and around Geelong in conjunction with Bendigo Bank. The concept is for a branch of Bendigo Bank to be invited to have a team member who joins a Club along with two or three others who work for the bank and become friends of Rotary, making up a team membership. The bank will pay $310 for the member. The Friends will attend when the member is unable to do so. A branch is expected to support two Rotary Clubs eg. Torquay and Grovedale may work together.A number of clubs in Geelong have already agreed to take part in this initiative.Expressions of interest from Clubs are due by 12 September.
Our Town ICE Project – an initiative of the Highton Rotary Club.Support from other clubs is sought to staff a stall from 12 – 16 October at a shopping centre in Geelong (probably Westfield).Rotarians who volunteer will be fully briefed so be able to talk about the issues while on the stall.
Susan Bashta, recipient of an assistant dog from Dogs for Kids with Disabilities
Susan was invited to our meeting as a guest to listen to the planned speaker, Katie, from Dogs for Kids with Disabilities. When Katie was unable to attend Susan offered to tell us her story which, for those of us present, was at once inspirational, moving and motivational.
Susan’s 11 year old son Isaac was diagnosed with autism at age 4. From this moment Susan and her husband have taken a self-help approach, researching autism, treatments, programmes and assistance themselves and self-funding all of it.
They commenced an intensive self-help programme immediately, hiring university students to assist with training Isaac. Susan explained that what we are likely to see as behavioural issues are, in fact ‘meltdowns’ over which Isaac has no control, nor is he able to explain what is happening or wrong. He sleeps very little and has high levels of anxiety but also they now understand, thanks to a new programme using the Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) that Isaac understands a lot and is starting to use tools such as letter stencils, to communicate.
Susan told us about the trainer they, and 30 other families, brought to Australia from the US to work with their autistic children. On one occasion recently ,after the trainer told Isaac an Aesop’s Fable about a wolf swallowing a bone and choking, he asked Isaac what the story was about. Isaac spelt out PAIN. He is now learning grammar with 100% accuracy.
Charlie is Isaac’s assistance dog, and has changed their lives. There is a very close bond between Charlie and Isaac, with Charlie understanding Isaac and his needs. Susan told us about Charlie ‘backing up’ to Isaac because he understand Isaac struggles with making eye contact. She also talked about the sense of safety Charlie brings, especially when they are out and about and he is attached to Isaac with a lead around his waist. Susan has only to say ‘sit’ or ‘drop’ and not only will Charlie do this but so will Isaac. Before Charlie, Isaac had no sense of following directions such as to stop at a traffic light or not to run away.

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!
Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence. This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.
There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022. An answering service operates out of hours.
All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.
Absence when away on travel is not an excuse. It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
