President's Report No 8
Good Evening Everyone,
Well if ever there was need to make use of our ‘Telephone Tree’ now would be the time.
It has been brought to my attention a few of our members are going through a very rough time at the moment and are probably feeling a bit low seeing as we cannot communicate in an openly physical way, although a drive through coffee and a walk along the beach, weather permitting of course, may be just a little way towards not feeling so alone and isolated with their thoughts and feelings..! Phone calls, texts messages and good old FaceTime and Zoom just don’t cut it in the same way as face to face.
I too have just found out that an elderly member of my ‘extended’ family and is in a nursing home has just been diagnosed and isolated with asymptomatic Covid, although she’s well is being monitored every day, we can only pray..
So, it’s affecting every one of us in different ways. Not being able to see or visit family, friends, and relatives, doing trips to the hospital for any or ongoing treatments are bad enough but on your own?! Being admitted to a hospital also and not being able to have visitors is so heartbreaking and can be quite scary too.
But there are those who have family Interstate or Overseas who haven’t seen one another for these last 6 months or so, especially if one of them is unwell in any way, my heart goes out to them and their families, as like my neighbour who became a Grandmother just recently who won’t see or hold her newborn Granddaughter until she’ll be almost 2 months old..
It goes on, so pick up the phone, make those calls to one another and just check that they’re okay, you’re not going to know unless you ask and could just make all the difference in the world.
Tomorrow night we have an interesting Guest Speaker, President Ajith Singh from the Rotary Club of Yercaud Tamil Nadu, India. We’re hoping he’ll talk about how they’re coping with their Club activities and how Covid has affected them as a club and in the community.
We will also have a brief, presented by our very own Lesley, District Secretary, on all things ‘New Club Constitution & Bylaws’ which will be adopted at the AGM in November, this will be put to us as members to have a short discussion of which your input will be gladly accepted.
The first woman to be nominated to be President, and in the same year our own Past District Governor Jessie Harman on the Board of Rotary International and DGN Kathy Rivett.
Jennifer E. Jones (on left), a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, has been nominated to become Rotary International’s president for 2022-23, a groundbreaking selection that will make her the first woman to hold that office in the organization’s 115-year history.
Jones will officially become president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge her.
Jones is founder and President of Media Street Productions Inc., an award-winning media company in Windsor. She was chair of the board of governors of the University of Windsor and chair of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. She has been recognized for her service with the YMCA Peace Medallion, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and Wayne State University’s Peacemaker of the Year Award, a first for a Canadian. Jones holds a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.).
A current Rotary Foundation trustee, Jones has been a Rotary member since 1997 and has served Rotary as RI vice president, director, training leader, committee chair, moderator, and district governor. She is the co-chair of the End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign Committee, which aims to raise $150 million for polio eradication efforts.
Jones recently led the successful #RotaryResponds telethon, which raised critical funds for COVID-19 relief and was viewed by more than 65,000. Jones has also received Rotary International’s Service Above Self Award
Everyone who joined in on Monday 10th August heard Catherine Eagleson speak about joining the Clue Detective puzzle Agency and then joined in for some fun solving a puzzle together !!
For those who missed out you can relive the experience VIEW MEETING HERE
As Catherine explained solving puzzles is great activity and a real health benefit during COVID lockdown at the same time contributing to Lift the Lid , Mental health research and raising funds for the Torquay Rotary Club.
For only $59.95 annual subscription / just $5 a month, you can have fun with puzzles at the same time contributing to the Club's 2020 fundraising efforts . This is just one good idea for fund raising when we are are limited in our normal fundraising efforts such as BBQs , Bunnings etc
I would sincerely encourage you to join the puzzles and ask friends and family to join as well -
If we could as a Club sell a number of memberships , we could make a big difference our fundraising
Torquay Rotary are now meeting online every Monday (excluding public holidays and the last Monday of every month when a Board Meeting will be held instead ) at 7:00pm. All Members are invited to participate and we have resumed a program including Guest speakers and some fun activities.
Visitors and Guests are very welcome. If you would like to join us please
Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
Whilst we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, our meetings will be held on ZOOM for the time being.
All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.
Club Members and friends also come together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially at the Friday night Happy Hour so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
