President’s Report 15 June 2024

Hello Members and Friends,
I hope everyone had a pleasant long weekend and a short break from Rotary and other commitments.
I would like to extend special get-well messages to Gail Chrisfield who has not been well recently and wish her comfort in her recuperation. Thankyou to Maggie who sent flowers and our wishes to Gail.
As the Rotary year draws to an end, it is a time for both reflection and celebration.
As far as celebrations go, we have two very significant events coming up which deserve our support:

District Changeover

Please come along and welcome our very own Lesley Shedden as District Governor for 2024-25 at The Sands on Sunday 23rd June.
Supporting this event, supports the Club in conducting this event and most of all demonstrates our support for Lesley and Rob for the year ahead.
Let’s Create some Magic!

Club Changeover

Our Club Changeover Dinner is on Monday 8th July at Kithbrooke Park.
Please bring along partners and friends as we celebrate another busy year at Torquay and welcome our new President Bruce Turner and his Board.
There will be a number of significant special presentations to members and retiring members of our club, recognising service to the club and also our community. A special evening not to be missed!

RYLA Presentation

Our last face to face meeting for the year next Monday 17th June at Kithbrook Park will be an exciting joint meeting with Grovedale Waurn Ponds Rotary Club as we hear from the two RYLA participants Adrien Aurel and Thomas Wallis who we jointly sponsored to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp in April.
As many of you would know, RYLA provides an inspiring and challenging personal development and leadership program for many. If you attended District Conference in Mount Gambier in March, you would have witnessed the MCs Safari Smith & Jed Castle who led the whole weekend very competently - they were past RYLA participants!!

Elder Abuse Awareness Prevention Walk

Saturday saw members, and a couple of their partners, of our Club meet down on the Esplanade, for our Domestic and Family Violence Awareness walk - also highlighting Elder Abuse. We were more than delighted to greet and walk with ten Rotarians from Highton and Kardinia Rotary Clubs also join us for the walk.
The purple really stood out and we were very visible.
We walked from Zeally Bay Road to the SLSC. The rain stayed away and the sun shone. It was a lovely walk, with lots of chatter and fellowship.
Then the treat of the morning back to Doc Hughes for a well-earned coffee, and more chatter
I am extremely grateful to those who came along and supported the walk. Tan from Doc Hughes has taken some posters to display, plus some Orange Door brochures and business cards - a huge thank you to her for her assistance and also making room for 18 of us to enjoy our coffees.

Cancer Council Donation

As part of the Torquay Rotary Club’s disbursement of funds, a donation of $1000 has been made to “Team Bogans” who entered a vehicle in the Winter Shitbox Rally. All funds raised through this event go to Cancer Council Research.

The following is a compilation of the recent article from The Surf Coast Times featuring their team.
“Team Bogans” has been formed by Tyrepower Torquay operator Nick Vivian and close mate Matt Morgan (director of Morgan Home Builders). They were lucky to gain admission to the coming rally on just the second attempt and will join this year’s winter Cancer Council Shitbox Rally, traversing more than 5,000km of road and terrain from Melbourne to Alice Springs beginning on June 14.

“I honestly have no nervousness stored up, I’m so excited to take on this event and it’s the same for Matt,” Mr Vivian said. “Just getting together with a good bunch of people who have all raised money for a good cause with the same goal and having a good time doing it – we’re pumped to get the show on the road.”

The drivers are expected to complete the journey on June 22 but will have to do so in their Ford BF Falcon wagon, which was bought for just $1,000 and made roadworthy. The key requirement for the Shitbox Rally is participating cars cannot exceed $1,500 in purchase price. Additional funds may be used in making the vehicle roadworthy and insured.
