President's Message 02 November 2024

President’s Message

There is no official President's Message this week, as Bruce is taking a well-deserved break in Cairns.

This week's rundown is courtesy of your Program Chairman, Neil Henderson.

Overview of Kieser Torquay Guest Speaker - Sam Mullany, Monday 28th October 2024:

Sam Mullany is the Principal Physiotherapist at Kieser Torquay and he visited our club last week.
His address covered how Kieser's point of difference is on safety and efficiency for its clients.
Sam explained how your body's muscle mass drops off after age 30, at around 3-5% per year. This rate can double after age 60.
Whilst daily walking is a great exercise, it is not enough, some resistance exercises should also be done. This is where Kieser can offer programs tailored to the age and needs of each individual. This may take the form of guided rehabilitation following an injury or illness.

Kieser has specific arrangements with several health funds as they now see the benefits of preventative action. If you have extras health insurance coverage, this may be able to be utilised towards their programs.
Sam told us that they expect to move into their new premises on the opposite side of the Surf Coast Hwy by December (just where the new traffic lights are being installed.) This move coincides with a November offer for new clients of 4 weeks for free.

Kieser are also a major sponsor for our District Conference next March.

Club Meetings

  • Please remember that the meetings are open to guests and with the quality of speakers, I’m sure that guests would enjoy their visit. It is great way to introduce community members to our club.
  • To relieve the pressure on those who are busy on meeting nights, we would like to have more members comfortable with setting up our presentation room. Please let Bruce know if you would like to learn how to set up the meeting room equipment (computer, camera and TV). A training session on the equipment will be arranged at a time that best suits those interested.
Stories

Santa Claus Required

The Surf Coast Shire is planning activities prior to Christmas this year and has asked if we may have anyone interested in taking on the role of Santa.
The role will entail photos out in the community on Saturday, December 7, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm.
Santa will require a current Working With Children (WWC) certificate.
If interested, please contact Trevor Hall.

Meningococcal B Vaccination - Saves lives

On the Government immunisation schedule, children and young adults are immunised against Meningococcus ACW and Y, but not Meningococcus B.
Meningococcus B is currently only available by requesting a script from your GP, and it costs around $130-150.
Rotary Member - Amanda Hough suggests that members could consider gifting this immunisation to their grandchildren as a Christmas present, available for children up to 25 years of age.

Say No To Domestic and Family Violence Walk

An Awareness Walk in Torquay will be held on Tuesday 26th November at 0930.
We would like as many people as possible to attend this, hopefully for an hour, and we can follow that up with coffee if you would like.
If you do not have a purple T-shirt, please wear purple or orange. Orange is the colour Zonta wears on their walks to raise awareness of this dreadful gender abuse
I will have posters to place in the coffee shop/café toilets prior to the 16 days of Activision to increase awareness
This is a serious issue within our communities, and we need to increase awareness.
Please join me in increasing this awareness.

Knitting Pattern for the Blanket Squares

Knitting for the squares to make blankets for the disadvantaged:
  • Using size 4mm (8 imperial) and 8 ply wool.
  • Cast on 45 stitches leaving a 9-12 inch length of thread to make sewing the squares together easier
  • Knit until you have made a square (Approx 74 rows)
  • Fasten off and leave a 9-12 inch length of yarn before you cut the yarn.
Thank you to all who knit squares or donated needles and yarn
