President's Report No 42

Boy, after two consecutive Monday’s ‘off’ due to public holidays – we certainly returned to Rotary with an action-packed evening.
There was 26 for dinner, including partners Paul Binyon and Kathryn McNamara and our guests and speakers Bob Marmion and Janice Prest.
A further 10 people joined us online including Ros Horne and Ross Lamont from The Rotary Club of Highton.

Our new meeting schedule worked well. Thank you for supporting and embracing this new meeting format.

Amanda gave us the invocation and toast to Rotary International as Alan Anderson commenced serving the meals – Thank you both.

As each person completed their meals, they moved into the Theatre Room ready for Rotary Business, Reports, and our Guest Speakers.

Vernon D’Souza has spent some time in hospital and is now home resting. Our thoughts and very best wishes are with Vernon, Charmaine, and the family. We hope to see Vernon back with us soon as he is able.

St Lukes Anglican Church contacted Alan Anderson regarding the use of our BBQ Trailer at their recent Fete. Alan arranged the trailer for the Fete – we were pleased to be able to help them out, as they do us. We received a letter of thank you from the Surfcoast Anglican Parish, thanking us for our support. The funds raised from the Fete will go towards an all-ability access ramp into the Church Hall.

We have received a Thank you certificate from Step up to Clean up – for our participation in Clean up Australia. Thank you again, from me, for all who participated.

Alan Anderson has challenged us to register and participate in the Lifeline Push up Challenge. See details in the article included in this bulletin.

Trevor Hall reported on the BBQ over the Easter Weekend, the success of the BBQ and how good the venue was. The lovely weather certainly helped bring the people out. Thank to Trevor and the team on the success of this event.

Kithbrooke Park have their own ‘internal’ news journal. The latest edition shows Graham Gill receiving a prized Golf Award. Graham has been a good golfer for many years! Congratulations Graham – Well Done.

Then – for me, a great privilege ….. to present Gerard McNamara with a Major Donor Paul Harris Fellow Recognition along with a glass display piece.
In the letter from Rotary Foundation, it says –
In honour of your contribution, we have enclosed recognition pieces for you to proudly wear or display. Thank you for being a Major Donor of the Rotary Foundation. We appreciate your outstanding support and everything you do to make the world a better place through Rotary.
Congratulations Gerard!

It was time for our Guest Speakers and presentation. Kelly took over the meeting as chair.
Speakers Bob and Janice with a couple of cameo appearances from Paul Binyon, told us of their time in the Police Force, and situations they found themselves in. Bob told of how it affected him resulting in his PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and how this effected his life. A very interesting talk, although at times quite confronting.

If you help yourself to a glass of water from the bar at Kithbrooke Park, can you please make sure the tap is properly turned off. Tuesday morning the water had completely emptied out of the water container, all over the floor, as the tap wasn’t turned off correctly.

Over recent weeks Jan Emmett and Greg Plumridge have been contacted regarding members information – namely Birthdays and Anniversaries. Each member is responsible for the information contained in your portfolio on ClubRunner. All the information used comes from your ClubRunner portfolio. I suggest you all take a moment, log onto ClubRunner and check all your information is correct, and if not, you can edit your own profile and correct it. Chairmans Report - Bob Marmion - Police Veterans Victoria

Our guest speakers for the night were Bob Marmion, Speakers Bureau Co-ordinator & Veteran Peer Support Officer and Janice Priest, Peer Support Officer from Police Veterans Victoria.

Police Veterans Victoria(PVV) is an not for profit organisation set up to help veterans who had have experienced traumatic situations resulting in PTSD.

Bob and Janice spoke about their experiences as police officers and the PVV’s work. They are keen to let the public know what the challenges are facing police veterans and how the PVV can help.

The presentation covered two things that are intertwined. One is a book that was published late last year about Bob’s time in the Police Force and how he has been dealing with PTSD.  This is a summary from Bob:

The Price We Pay is a book about the real life experiences faced by a typical member of the Victoria Police Force. Some are funny, others are scary, all are brutally honest. The accounts give an insight into the daily life of a young constable in uniform and later, a detective in the Criminal Investigation Branch.

I loved my job; it meant everything to me. I was passionate about the job; I just didn’t realise it was also going to kill me if given the chance. If I was a cat, I would have one life left. I should have been killed eight times.

The book goes further than just being a blow by blow account of fighting crime. It traces my journey from a young constable to a physical and mental wreck as a result of the incredible workload of being a detective in Melbourne’s crime riddled northern suburbs. I faced the worst humanity had to offer – brutal, uncaring and vicious behaviour that was repeated over and over. I saw and experienced things that no-one person should have to .

Whilst the book gives a unique insight into real life policing, it also documents the cost – in effect, the price we pay for law and order. Whilst set some decades ago, it still has a great deal of relevance to today. Not much has changed. Police are still ravaged by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of going about their daily duties. As a result, many are left traumatised and unable to work. Too many take their own lives.

An important part of the book is the recovery process. I reached the absolute bottom of the pit, affected by drug and alcohol addiction and contemplating suicide. Slowly but surely, over a thirty year period, I dragged myself out of the pit and rebuilt my life. Though still burdened with PTSD and the nightmares of my service, life is now good.

Bob and Janice spoke very candidly and had us all engaged in the presentation. A robust Q&A session was had by members with input from Paul Binyon on current practices in VicPol to round out the evening.

A very thought provoking evening for those in the room and online.

Regards,
Kelly Binyon

As an aside, Lucy received the following message re our project from the Governor of the Gulf Province Chris Haiveta

Thank you, Sis, for your tireless efforts to Assist our village over the years through the foundation.
I am committed to supporting you and the foundation as you prepare to widen your coverage  on critical issues.
We are working with a couple NGOs in the Province already and can provide you the letter of support.
I suggest that we formalize the support and collaboration through an MOU.
In the meantime it would be much better to send a profile and EOI from the foundation to me aa head of the Provincial Government so that we can commence to formalize the relationship.
God bless and thank you Sis.

Peace Scholarship Applications Close 15th May

The 2023 Rotary Peace Fellowship application is now available, and we need your help finding the next cohort of global peace and development leaders.

As a club president, you play a critical role in keeping members informed about the Rotary Peace Centers programs. Encourage club members to use their professional and social contacts to find potential candidates. They can also support the program by coaching candidates through the application process and connecting them to districts that can endorse their applications, a required step in the application process.

These resources can help you and your members recruit candidates for 2023 Rotary Peace Fellowships:
  • Take the All About the Rotary Peace Fellowships course to learn about qualification requirements, eligibility restrictions, the application process, and more.
  • Send emails to your contacts with the fellowship announcement attached.
  • Use our referral form to tell us about potential candidates, and we’ll follow up with them.
  • As we grow our certificate program, we are particularly seeking qualified candidates for our peace centers at Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) and Makerere University (Uganda). The one-year program is intended for working professionals and requires 11 weeks of on-site participation. We are looking for candidates with a minimum of five years of relevant work experience (the average age for this program is 42). Graduates receive a post-graduate diploma in peace studies upon completion of the program.
Candidates have until 15 May to submit applications to The Rotary Foundation. Trained Rotary endorsers have until 1 July to submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation.

Send any questions about the fellowship program to rotarypeacecenters@rotary.org. Thank you for your dedication to the Rotary Peace Centers and your help educating Rotary members and your community about the fellowships.

Sincerely,
Rotary Peace Centers

Rotary International & District 9780 Info

Shekhar and Rashi Mehta at their home in Kolkata. Rashi painted the picture Mother and Child, behind her.

When I met Shekhar almost 20 years ago, he was busily manning a booth at the Rotary International Convention. His enthusiasm and energy in showcasing his club’s projects were infectious. A project man myself, I was inspired by the work exhibited at the booth. That casual encounter developed into a strong friendship.

Shekhar is a visionary leader. He always sees things others can’t. He envisaged a way to eradicate illiteracy in India by 2025 and designed the TEACH program (which stands for Teacher support, E-learning, Adult literacy, Child development, Happy school). He started the Shelter Kit project that now is in the vanguard of disaster relief in India. His Saving Little Hearts project, which provides heart surgeries to thousands of children, along with the more than 15 eye hospitals he helped establish, which have served hundreds of thousands, speaks to the scope of his dreams.

Ravi Vadlamani

Rotary Club of Guntur, India
2001-02 governor of District 3150

He has an exceptional talent for building teams and driving them to achieve their goals. Shekhar’s programs and ideas may seem larger than life, but he always walks the extra mile to make Rotarians feel at home.

His power of dreaming big is backed up by planning, perseverance, and patience. He’s an excellent communicator who connects with his audience instantly and can motivate people to move mountains. He is also a family man, ably supported by his spouse, Rashi.

Shekhar’s X factor as a leader? Nobody is able to say no to him when he asks for something.
