President's Report No 29

Well ……. Although we did not meet as a club on Monday evening ---- there has been a ‘heap’ of club activities and members involvement going on ……

The Book Fair was run last weekend.
What a fantastic venue we were so fortunate to have. A huge thank you to Miranda from Haydens Real Estate for negotiating the premises for us, and to Ben Smith for the promotion and sponsorship.
St. Lukes Anglican Church once again let us use their tables. This is a great help and support to us, as the club does not have enough for our display. Thank you to Ken Farrow from St Lukes and to Alan Anderson for their assistance and support.
Gail Birchall offered to do all the catering for the weekend. Those volunteering were very ‘spoilt’ (and I can assure you very much appreciated!) the delicacies Gail provided for morning and afternoon teas. Thank you so much Gail.
A special Thank you to James Waters (My daughter Stephanie’s partner) for the design, printing, and donation of the large front window ‘stickers’. These looked great, and certainly helped with event advertising and promotion.
After a solid weekend of trading, Monday was clean up and moving out of all the tables and taking the boxes of unsold books back to the storage container.
To everyone who volunteered ---- Thank you!
As we know, there is a lot of physical work involved. There are people constantly moving though the displays ensuring they are neat, appealing and any poor or damaged books removed from the tables. And the ‘finance table’ at the front, making sure all who enter comply by the ‘rules of entry’ and pay for the treasures they have found in store.
These events are not possible without the volunteering and support of so many people. We were once again joined by members of local Probus Clubs and by Partners, family, and friends of our members.
For all this to happen – there needs to be a good coordinator. A massive Thank you to Neil Henderson who has spent many hours on the Book Fair making sure everything required was arranged, is in place and there were enough volunteers each day.

The Motor Show is only a couple of weeks away now folks!
The Motor Show Committee are working very hard and meeting frequently now looking at all the tasks to be done. As we know, this is a huge event for us – the club, for the community and motor enthusiasts.
I still have promotional DL Flyers – give me a call if you have time to distribute some. I have had 4 members of the club collect some – so still plenty left! These can be put in retail outlets (with permission) distributed around town and anywhere else you may think of ……

Our new club clothing has arrived.
Those who came to the Book Fair would have received their order, and if you saw any images taken there you may have noticed members wearing their shirts and hats?
It would be good to have us all in our new ‘gear’ for the Motor Show.
For those who placed an order, I have them at my place – so please give me a call and we can arrange for your order to be collected …… or dropped off.

Jan Emmett has been in contact with The Rotary Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds discussing our annual Joint Meeting and catch up of our two clubs.
The date is set for Thursday 17th February at Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre. There will be a lot more details on this coming.

On to BBQ’s ….. We have club commitments on the following dates, which Mal has sent out volunteer requests for –
- Sunday 20th - Cowrie Market. Also, on the 20th of Feb, we have the Torquay Football Club ‘Tiger Drop’. We will use the Football Club BBQ for this event as ours will be at the Cowrie Market.
- Sunday March 19th – Cowrie Market
- Saturday 26th March – Danger 1000 Swim
- Saturday, Sunday, and Monday 16 -18 April. At Ripcurl Shop over Easter 10 till 2 pm
Please let Mal know your availability on these dates above.
Mal has asked for a BBQ captain to look after everything over Easter as he will be away. We need someone to see Mal about this role.
Mal does an excellent job coordinating the BBQ, arranging supplies, and volunteer Rosters. Again Mal …. Thank you so much!

Over recent weeks, I have heard of members, partners, family, and friends who have been affected by this ‘Rotten’ COVID virus. My thoughts and very best wishes go out to you all, and hope that you are soon over ‘it’ and able to be out and about again.

District Governor Elect Kathy Rivett sent this explanation about the meaning of the 2022-23 Theme. "This was designed by an Australian indigenous artist to link with the Melbourne convention in 2023.
Circle - connections to one another
Dots around it - Our People
There are 7 Dots because of our Rotary’s 7 areas of focus
Circle + dots around it - Navigation star, our guiding light
Green solid line - digging stick (used when doing hard work);
for us it’s People of Action, represents the tools for getting things done
Colors: Purple, Green & White -
Celebrate DEI- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Freedom to express ourselves differently but still with a special connection
Purple- Polio
Green- the Environment
White - Peace
Represents Empowerment and Newness and also the colours were utilised for the women's movement giving us the opportunity to grow our female membership"

Stories
2022 Book Fair Wrap-up

The green light to access our premises only came on Christmas Eve so we had just 3 weeks to make this project happen. The systems are in place, so it isn’t that hard to swing into action. It does need member commitment but with Covid travel relaxed many were away. Thank you to the 20 members who found time to volunteer for the various tasks. We also had another 12 volunteers from outside the club – a most important group.

This year we made $5590 gross. Our expenses are expected to come in at about $430, so
NET PROFIT:  $5160 (interestingly $572 or 11% is from gold coin door entrance!) Treasurer Mal will confirm the exact figure once final expenses are known.
This is about half of what we made last year. Takings are down because:
  • We opened for 3 days, not 4
  • Pricing was down. We sold bags lots for $10. No “premium” books this year
  • There was no significant presale by a private buyer – last year $850
We also had a secondary objective this year and that was to significantly lower our book stock. We took no donations from previous major “suppliers” but did accept small quantities from the public. The latter amounted to nearly 30 cartons on day 1 of set up!

I have a developed a theory that despite large book sales in the last 2 years we have probably been accepting more donations than we actually sold. The storage container was bursting. We only took about ¾’s of our stock to this year’s fair.

We very successfully managed to sort through our stock and identify books that are starting to reappear year after year. Joe from Winchelsea Lions Club took away some damaged and unsaleable books for recycling.

There are sufficient books in the container to fully run next year’s Book Fair. We need to run one in 2023 simply to get rid of these books otherwise the club has a significant disposal problem.
I strongly recommend that book donations are once more kept to a minimum – we need good quality children’s books!
Running the Book Fair is not that hard, and at $5000 profit, still very worthwhile. It is a great hands-on project that brings our club together and even entices around a dozen volunteers to help. But we are very reliant on outside factors:
  • We do not have premises for 2023
  • We rely on St Luke’s church to lend us tables
  • We rely on West Geelong Rotary to lend as the book dividers.
We need all 3 of these to run our Book Fair.
Neil Henderson - Book Fair Coordinator

TONGA VOLCANO ERUPTION AND TSUNAMI APPEAL

The effects of the Volcano and Tsunami on January 15th will be far-reaching, impacting the Tonga Community for months, possibly years to come.

Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) will be working with Rotary New Zealand World Community Service (RNZWCS) and Rotary Club of Nuku’alofa (Tonga) in providing aid and assistance to the affected communities’ and restoring their livelihoods.

Rotarians Against Malaria - Tonga Update

Further to my recent email regarding the Toga Disaster, I contacted Brian Ashworth from Disaster Aid Australia to find out if they were doing anything to assist the Tongan relief operation. I have attached Brian's response to this email below.

The second event was the release of the WHO World Malaria Report 2021. The take home messages from the report are;
  • 241million malaria cases were recorded in 2020, an increase of 14 million from 2019.
  • There were 627,000 deaths recorded in 2020, an increase of 69,000 on the previous year.
  • 96% of the cases were in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Regards to Everyone,
Noel Howard
District 9780 RAWCS/RAN Chair

Disaster Aid Australia as a smaller Rotary Charity is committed to delivering cost effective aid to respect the value of the donations we receive.

We also like to make a difference smaller communities the bigger aid agencies miss.

Also our model is based on finding out what the communities need, not what we might think they need.

Other than our SkyHydrants for safe water, we look for things we can deliver locally than try and manage major import of materials with its consequential delays.

To do this we need at least one of the following:

  • An effective local partner which may be a Rotary Club or an NGO.
  • DAA volunteers on site.
  • Knowing the needs of the community that can be provided by local purchase.

As we have not worked in Tonga for many years, lack of communications, and no ability to travel we have no plan of action to date. (we have been in communication with Australian Rotary Clubs with Tonga experience but to date due to communication issues they are in a similar position)

Also COVID has  severely limited our income over the past two years and we are currently highly committed to the recovery from Super Typhoon Odette which hit the Philippines in late December. We are working with our long established and trusted partner Balay Mindanaw on the island of Dinagat where approximately 20,000 homes have been destroyed.

Since 20th December
  • DAA Tents and SkyHydrants, stored in the Philippines, have been deployed;
  • Financial support provided for food packages and tarpaulins;
  • 10 additional SkyHydrants shipped.
  • An additional grant for rebuilding made.

We have been in touch with SkyJuice, suppliers of the SkyHydrant and in discussions believe the early presence of Australian Navy ships with considerable ability to desalinate seawater is likely to provide the quickest way of providing drinking water.
(Although SkyHydrants can filter water contaminated with volcanic dust the nature of the dust quickly damages the membranes)

Regards

    Brian

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.laugh

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.

Rotary International & District 9780 Info

Shekhar and Rashi Mehta at their home in Kolkata. Rashi painted the picture Mother and Child, behind her.

When I met Shekhar almost 20 years ago, he was busily manning a booth at the Rotary International Convention. His enthusiasm and energy in showcasing his club’s projects were infectious. A project man myself, I was inspired by the work exhibited at the booth. That casual encounter developed into a strong friendship.

Shekhar is a visionary leader. He always sees things others can’t. He envisaged a way to eradicate illiteracy in India by 2025 and designed the TEACH program (which stands for Teacher support, E-learning, Adult literacy, Child development, Happy school). He started the Shelter Kit project that now is in the vanguard of disaster relief in India. His Saving Little Hearts project, which provides heart surgeries to thousands of children, along with the more than 15 eye hospitals he helped establish, which have served hundreds of thousands, speaks to the scope of his dreams.

Ravi Vadlamani

Rotary Club of Guntur, India
2001-02 governor of District 3150

He has an exceptional talent for building teams and driving them to achieve their goals. Shekhar’s programs and ideas may seem larger than life, but he always walks the extra mile to make Rotarians feel at home.

His power of dreaming big is backed up by planning, perseverance, and patience. He’s an excellent communicator who connects with his audience instantly and can motivate people to move mountains. He is also a family man, ably supported by his spouse, Rashi.

Shekhar’s X factor as a leader? Nobody is able to say no to him when he asks for something.
