President's Report No 29
Welcome Back Everyone…!
Yes, we’re back and doing our very first Face to face meeting tomorrow night (Monday) at the Lion’s Village, for the time being.
I have looked on ClubRunner a number of times and have noticed that we only have 24 people attending tomorrow nights’ meeting which is a bit disappointing considering we have 46 members in the club. I realise that some still have some form of apprehension to going out in public again, but every precaution has and will be taken to keep us all safe. The program for tomorrow night will be a fun and entertaining one, conducted by none other that the ‘Fun Wizard’ Neil Hendo’ and his sidekick Paul Moran for a night of quizzes and surprises...! Hopefully there will be a few more to RSVP before cutoff!
So, come along and have plenty of change in your pockets as we will be having a ‘fines’ night’ and I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of something during the ‘lockdown and Covid period’...!!!
Majority of Rotary clubs now are getting ‘back out there’, and we should do the same, we’ve all been couped up for long enough, time to spread the wings and enjoy the freedom we have at the moment.
For those of you who, actually, read the Bulletin, there is a lot going on and of course next weekend will be the launch of the ‘The Great Ocean Road Cruise’, this too will be explained in further detail by Greg tomorrow night.
Thank You once again to those of you who volunteered at the Book Fair and to those too who spent days running around and organising. All members would have received an email via ClubRunner from Neil with the details on how we went, and I can honestly say that all the hard work was worth every dollar we made... It was a fantastic result and again ‘congratulations’ to every one of you.
Just a bit extra on the Book fair, in the background, work is still going on with the collection of another 4 pallets of books (approx. 200 boxes) still to come from Lifeline to be organised and stored in the containers ready for next years’ book fair. I am sure that Mike Reed and his team will put the call out for assistance when they are ready to be picked up.
A special shout out😲 to John McDonald, 💐wishing you a speedy recovery John and look forward to seeing you and your smiley face 😁 back with us again very soon😊.
Regrettably the continuing COVID Restrictions for large outdoor crowds has left us no option but to CANCEL our 2021 On-Site Motor Show in Torquay however for 2021 we will be holding a
“Virtual Motor Show” where for a minimum $5 entry donation to the Torquay Rotary Club entrants will be able to enter a pic of their car or Motor Cycle to be in the running for one of 6 sought after Limited Edition 2021 Trophies which will hopefully attract a good number of entries, and corresponding fundraising dollars.
This Virtual Show will run for 4 weeks through to the originally calendared show date of 8th Feb when entries will close for Judging on the traditional Show date of 14th Feb.
Please encourage anyone you know with a car or Motorcycle to enter. We have some great prizes, a Golf Package at RACV Resort valued at $300 and a $100 voucher from Tyrepower Torquay.
Our “Great Ocean Road Cruise” will again be held 13th Feb, the day before what would have been our 2021show date and will car owners an opportunity to get their cars out and take a “cruise” along the Surf Coast. This will be more of an old fashioned “car trial” Treasure Hunt style drive to encourage the involvement of our Motor Show supporters who have been unable to attend any Car Shows in the Geelong Region this summer.
There is NO Entry Fee, drivers who wish to join the Cruise will simply download a page of directions and questions to answer and which they will need to have stamped at 2 checkpoints as they follow and inland route to Lorne, returning along the Surf Coast to Torquay during the afternoon of Saturday 13th Feb, with an award to be given for the best correct page. We encourage Car Clubs, particularly those from out of town, to participate in “The Cruise” in lieu of the annual show. We hope that many will choose to meet after the cruise for a meal and perhaps even stay a night in the region.
Please spread the word to any one who may have a special car or motorcycle that would be interested in supporting us by entering the Virtual Motor Show or participating in the Cruise.
Please remember that there will be NO Regular Rotary Club Meeting on Monday 22nd February as we will be meeting with the Rotary Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds on Wednesday 24th instead
Stay tuned for details of our next meeting the week after on Monday 1st March
2021 is a special time for Rotary in Australia and New Zealand when we will come together to celebrate the first 100 years of Service in Australia .
In 1921, four Rotary Clubs were created in Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington and Sydney and from there, Rotary and Rotaract clubs were created everywhere across Australia and New Zealand.
We all share a centenary in 2021 as we come together and create a common legacy.
District 9780 has agreed to be a part of this special year, and Groups 9 & 10 which comprise all the Geelong Clubs from Torquay to Lara will be working together as a group in planning the celebration activities, with a baton relay on Sunday 21st March 2021, culminating in an end of the day event at Johnston Park in Central Geelong .
The Board has agreed to participate in this event and is seeking Club members interest in joining a small committee to organise Club involvement in this Centenary celebration.
If you would like to be a member of the Sub - Committee to help formulate plans for our Club's involvement with the Centenary Relay, then please contact either President Jan or Secretary Maggie.
Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
Whilst we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, our meetings will be held on ZOOM for the time being.
All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.
Club Members and friends also come together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially at the Friday night Happy Hour so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
