President's Report No 3

I start this week with some sad news.
I heard Monday morning, that Past District Governor Jeff Binder has passed away. His funeral was last Friday, with only 10 people present due to COVID Restrictions.
Jeff was a member and Past President of our club and was District Governor while a member of Torquay.
He was a great mentor and support to me, to a lot of members in our club - and to many in Rotary!

It is quite ironic, coincidental – or scary? That David Carlyle sent me this photograph last Friday (the day of Jeff’s funeral) from 1999, at my Changeover – coming in as president. Jeff was my secretary.

Although maybe a little hard to recognise … here is Alison and I, Jeff and Beryl Binder, both at the front, along with Charlie Matthews and his wife.

Thank you to Rotary Club of Corio Bay …. As mentioned in their Bulletin ….

VALE – PDG Jeff Binder—formerly a member of the Rotary Club of Torquay, passed away after a long battle with cancer. His funeral service was held last Friday, and unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, was only able to be attended by 10 people. The service was live streamed and the recording remains on the website of the Funeral firm—William Sheahan for a few days more. Jeff was our DG when the International Convention was held in Melbourne in 1993. He was amongst many other things a past Mayor of the City of South Barwon, a renowned Primary School Educator for several decades, a JP, a collector of veteran tractors including a Bull Dog which he fully restored, and on ‘retiring’ from the Education Depart-ment, turned his hand to become a Builder.

Well folks, that’s probably more than half my allocated space in this bulletin –

Anyhow, I move on ……
This week, we didn’t have to make any drastic changes to our meeting, as we were scheduled to have our monthly online meeting.

Looks like it is going to be a ‘week by week’ call to our Monday Meetings, beginning with next Monday when we have had to abandon our "Christmas in July" Dinner at the Torquay Hotel. This will now be another Zoom Meeting and I urge you all to log on as I will lead a discussion regarding possible change of venue for where we hold our Meetings and your valuable input will be needed.

Please keep a close eye on our bulletins, emails, and communications – as I’m sure our plans will have to change from time to time.
It is frustrating, as a lot of time and energy goes into planning our meetings and programs, but we do need to continue to comply with the rules, regulations, and government directives.

Our first online meeting went well Monday evening.

It was good to see so many people ‘Zoom in’, and some very relaxed people enjoying a nice beverage.
I do need to apologise; I didn’t realise we had gone to a second screen!
It was a shame Neil Henderson had poor internet reception, it would have been good to have an update on he and Mary’s (and Coco!) experiences in the outback.

We were joined by Lucy Loco, and had a terrific update on Papa New Guinea, the school building project and the involvement with Donations In Kind (DIK).
Isn’t it great how the Rotary Network operates - Lucy was talking about tools, and the need for them in the PNG village she is involved with, to aid in the construction of the school buildings.
With that said, Kelly said she would keep an eye out as residents move to Kithbrooke Park and ‘Downsize’. And Lucy was given the name and number of the manager of the large DIK depot in Footscray.

There is a detailed summary of Lucy and her talk later in this edition.

We had our first Board Meeting on Monday.
There was a lot of ideas and discussion about potential projects we can do, or be involved in.
I know there is already action in some of our portfolios, and other portfolio Chairs are looking at meetings with their team in the near future.
The minutes form the board meeting will be available for you all to read once they are completed. They will be available on ClubRunner.

We have members in the club who, yet again, had plans, flights, bookings, and family commitments they have had to once again either cancel or postpone.
My thoughts are with you, and hope you are able to unite with your family, physically, soon.

A Very Important date for your diary folks -
Monday 16th August 2021.
This is the official visit of our District Governor John Clue and his wife Heather.
John will give a brief address, but is a lot more interested in us – the members – our thoughts, suggestions, and ideas. Yes …. a Q & A with DG John!
So, please give some thought to this – it could be a great opportunity for us all to learn something.

Look forward to seeing you all virtually next Monday.

Cheers
President Michael

Stories
Project to Redevelop Classrooms at Lese Oalai village school PNG
Our presenter at last Monday's Zoom Meeting Lucy Loco spoke to us regarding  Project to Redevelop Classrooms at Lese Oalai in PNG. For those who were unable to joint us here is a summary of her presentation.

In the swampy lands of the Gulf Province of PNG, education is a major problem, with only 4.4% of the population (160,000) being literate. The school at Lese Oalai, (200km from Port Moresby), which currently houses 560 students, and was built in the middle of the last century is not only inadequate, but also unsafe as well.

Preps to Grade 3 are in classes of 70, teachers are poorly paid and the hope of providing each child with a proper education is poor.
There is no electricity, no reticulated water, and the only toilet is an open pit. The slab floor has been ravaged by floods and is broken and unsafe. Supports for the roofs are deteriorating, so classes are mostly held outside under a tree.

The school numbers are growing larger because the peripheral schools have even less support, are closing, and students are travelling large distances to get to Lese Oalai.
The school community has tried to get government assistance, but after many years of trying, this has not come. They are prepared to provide the labour (and are prepared to do the maintenance), but don’t have the capital to purchase the building materials. The current aim is to rebuild four classrooms to house the Preps to grade 3.

Our aim would be to provide the funding and some support, although in current Pandemic conditions, this will be hands-off. The Rotary Club of Boroko is enthusiastic to help, and will provide building supervision etc. Global Grants from the Rotary Foundation won’t fund the building of a new school, only the renovation. The current building is unsalvageable - from the foundations up. So, this will be a problem for providing support.

We are currently exploring ways other than a Global Grant to fund this project. It may be that Geelong Regional International Group and RAWCS may be able to help. But somehow, we would like to help to make this a model school, with a ripple down effect providing direction to other impoverished, unsupported schools in Papua New Guinea. It is imperative that Papua New Guinea is able to educate its people, as they are our closest neighbours.  Without education, and only 5km from Australia, their problems will become our problems.

Donation of Old Coats to Orange Sky

Following the wonderful reception from Orange Sky for the Coats and winter clothing donated by Rotarians, and the chilly winter that we are experiencing we have agreed to continue collecting for them.

Please note that all the people receiving the coats are currently homeless and many have asked if there are any thermal pants or skivvies.

So please check your wardrobes and donate any warm skivvies or pants as well as coats which are always in demand.

I will do regular pickups from our central collection point in Torquay which the Birchalls have kindly agreed to do.

HELP! TTT Needs Scaffolding
Calling all supporters...
We'd like your help, please, to find some scaffolding to borrow or hire for our stage lights!

A strange request, I know, but we've discovered recently that the lighting "trees" we have used in the past need to be higher (to avoid casting light on the audience from behind). A solution to this is to put up two aluminium scaffolding towers of about 3.9 metres height each (on wheels) and run a lighting bar between them (see picture below). This is perfectly legal and structurally sound and safe.

We've contacted suppliers but they charge over $1300 for hiring such structures. A cost that we can't 'absorb'.

If you happen to have some aluminium scaffolding sitting around (!) or know someone who could lend us (or hire us, or give us) such equipment by the middle of next week (depending on lockdown duration), please contact Michael Baker on 0413 040 976 to find out more.

Thanks so much for using your networks to help us out. We will give appropriate promotion and gratitude to any suppliers through our media outlets.

Community Fundraiser Trivia Night 14th August

Hi my name is Cherie Pilkington and l am organising a trivia night on the 14 th August at Kardinia church to raise money for a beautiful five year old boy who had Nueroblastoma a cancer in children. His only option after extensive treatment here in Australia is to go overseas which will cost his family $300,000. I was wondering if you could support the evening by either booking a table of 8 or by making a donation . We are in desperate need of your help.

Please contact Greg Plumridge on 0418521321 if you are interested in getting a table together for this fundraiser.

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.laugh

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.

Rotary International & District 9780 Info

Shekhar and Rashi Mehta at their home in Kolkata. Rashi painted the picture Mother and Child, behind her.

When I met Shekhar almost 20 years ago, he was busily manning a booth at the Rotary International Convention. His enthusiasm and energy in showcasing his club’s projects were infectious. A project man myself, I was inspired by the work exhibited at the booth. That casual encounter developed into a strong friendship.

Shekhar is a visionary leader. He always sees things others can’t. He envisaged a way to eradicate illiteracy in India by 2025 and designed the TEACH program (which stands for Teacher support, E-learning, Adult literacy, Child development, Happy school). He started the Shelter Kit project that now is in the vanguard of disaster relief in India. His Saving Little Hearts project, which provides heart surgeries to thousands of children, along with the more than 15 eye hospitals he helped establish, which have served hundreds of thousands, speaks to the scope of his dreams.

Ravi Vadlamani

Rotary Club of Guntur, India
2001-02 governor of District 3150

He has an exceptional talent for building teams and driving them to achieve their goals. Shekhar’s programs and ideas may seem larger than life, but he always walks the extra mile to make Rotarians feel at home.

His power of dreaming big is backed up by planning, perseverance, and patience. He’s an excellent communicator who connects with his audience instantly and can motivate people to move mountains. He is also a family man, ably supported by his spouse, Rashi.

Shekhar’s X factor as a leader? Nobody is able to say no to him when he asks for something.
