President's Report No 18

Hello Everyone

What a topsy-turvy week we’ve had - hot & dusty then wet & windy! I hope those with allergies & asthma have not been too troubled?☀️🌪🌧💨

Last Monday night’s meeting was huge with lots of guests in the room for the Launch of the 2020 Motor Show 🏎🏍(see detailed account further in the Bulletin). A big shout out to Greg Plumridge & the Motor Show Committee for their continued hard work on our biggest fundraiser. Next year’s Show will be H-U-G-E🤗 This means we will need lots of helpers so start spreading the word in your circles😊

During the week I hosted Ting overnight so we decided to try Korean BBQ in Geelong and it was great fun cooking our selections on the bier in the middle of the table. Ting did a fantastic job and showed Liam & myself how to do it properly as well as use chopsticks 🥢🥩🍗🍤🍲🥟 Just a friendly reminder to ask Ting along to any suitable activities so she can add to her exchange experience (contact Alanna or myself re details)✅

This week sees us “frock up” for the Melbourne Cup🏆 so ditch the casual wear and rock up in your finest outfit👗👔👞👡 - hats & fascinators🎩👒are a MUST! (basically because they look great in photos📷#letsgocrazy #fashionsonthefield #funnyphotos🥳🤣

Cannot wait to see you all on Monday night - don’t forget to bring gold coins for the sweeps💰💰

2019 Melbourne Cup Eve Social

Melbourne Cup Eve - Monday 4 November 2019

Please find below a link to the starting List for the 2019 Torquay Rotary International Handicap inc. Form Guide of which there will be a LIVE call on the night.

The cost to enter is $2.00 per entry. You can select as many horses as you wish but it will cost you $2.00 for each horse. A horse can be owned by more than one person (and if it wins the proceeds are divided equally).

The winning horse will be drawn on the night and the winner/winners take all.

Reminder that this event is a PARTNERS INVITED night so please book in your partners and remember to wear your "Day at the Races" best attire for a chance to hold the perpetual Trophy for the next year – "The Horse’s Head".

Let’s get as many as we can there. The more the merrier.

Run 4 Geelong - 17th November - Volunteers needed

I am writing to you about the fast approaching Barwon Health Foundation's Run 4 Geelong, held on Sunday 17 November. The Foundation team aims to raise over $100,000 for Barwon Health to advance research and purchase important medical equipment.

100% of the 2019 Run 4 Geelong registrations will support Our Hospital, Andrew Love Cancer Centre, Mental Health, Women & Children's Services and Care in the Community.

The Foundation team are seeking support from over 100 volunteers to come along to assist in the coordination of Run 4 Geelong and assist the team to raise over $100,000 for Barwon Health.

There are a variety of ways to support this family fun run and they include the following volunteer roles:

Friday November 15 - 11am - 5:30pm

Registration & race pack collection (5 Pakington St, previously V&R Fresh Food Market):

Saturday November 16 - 11am - 5pm

Registration & race pack collection (5 Pakington St, previously V&R Fresh Food Market):

Sunday November 17 - Event Day

Course marshall: 6am - 10:30am

Drinks station: 5:45am - 12:30am or 6:45am - 10:30am

Colour & Bubble stations: 6:45am - 10:30am

Registration area: 5:45am - 9:30am

Starting Line: 5:30am - 10am

Finishing Line: 6:30am - 12pm

Village Area: 6am - 12pm

If you are unable to help with any of these roles but would like to spread the word, please feel free to pass this email on to family and friends or add to your social media and follow Barwon Health Foundation on Facebook and Instagram for updates.

All volunteers helping on Friday 15, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November will recieve a free volunteer Run 4 Geelong branded T-shirt to keep.

THERE ARE BIG CHANGES THIS YEAR!

It will be a week-long event from 27 January to 3 February 2020
There will be 3 races though Torquay:

1.TOWARDS ZERO RACE TORQUAY ON 30^th JANUARY 2020

For the first time, the iconic surf town of Torquay will host our electric circuit men’s and women’s races. Previously held at Melbourne’s Albert Park, this is a chance to get up close to the world’s fastest bike riders in one of Australia’s most dynamic cycling events.

2.UCI WORLD TOUR DEAKIN UNIVERSITY ELITE WOMEN ON SAT 1^st FEBRUARY

3.UCI WORLD TOUR ELITE MEN ON SUNDAY 2^ND FEBRUARY

As usual, The Rotary Club of Torquay will receive $50 for each day that a member volunteers.

The new system is set up so volunteers can submit applications for the days they are available however, to do this you will need to click on the event that is taking place that day (on drop down EVENT menu)

For example, if you are available Thursday you will need to click on the Towards Zero Race Torquay (Thursday) or if you are available on Sunday you will need to click on the UCI Elite Men's Race (Sunday)

From there you can select a place and the list of roles available there will appear.

RYLA is one of the pre-eminent Youth Programs in our District for young people 18-25.

The RYLA District Committee is seeking expressions of interest from Rotarians who may be interested in joining the District Committee.

The Committee aims to fill vacancies ensuring where possible there is a wide geographic spread of committee members throughout the District. Current committee members live in Geelong, Maryborough, Horsham, Warrnambool and Mount Gambier.

Rotary International Convention Comes to Melbourne

Melbourne has been announced as the host city for the 2023 Rotary International Convention, the largest conference secured this century for Victoria.

Melbourne is a Big Events City! Set to deliver over $88 million to the Victorian economy, the Convention is the most valuable conference ever won for the state, with the four-day event anticipated to attract more than 20,000 Rotarians from around the world. The global spotlight will be on Melbourne and how we present ourselves to the world.

The Convention will take place 27-31 May 2023 using superb venues; Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. All activities and events are within the Heart and Soul of Melbourne. Over 7000 hotel rooms over 50 properties across Melbourne. Our transport plan uses our famous trams, ferries and buses to quickly and easily move delegates between venues, hotels, event and restaurants. And of course, Melbourne is a very walkable city with many interesting routes and laneways to tantalise visitors.

DG Rosanne's Purple House Project

You are invited to contribute to a project to support Purple House, an organisation that provides dialysis services to remote indigenous people in Central Australia.

Purple House is an innovative Indigenous-owned and run health service operating from its base in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Now operating 16 remote clinics and a mobile dialysis unit called the Purple Truck, Purple House is getting patients back home so that families and culture can remain strong.

DG Rosanne Kava has asked us all to provide any of the following items to our Assistant Governor, Judy Beasley, who will pass them on to Purple House CEO Sarah Brown for delivery to clients in remote communities

Soaps, shampoos, conditioner, body lotion and toiletries including combs, brushes, toothpaste and tooth brushes (no sanitary items as they are sourced elsewhere).
Special recognition will be given to the Club that provides the top contribution.

Think about volunteering to assist Purple House if you are travelling in central Australia, eg to assist in building a new Purple House in Coober Pedy, or as a nurse on the Purple Bus or one of the Purple Houses. Recommend Rotary Global Rewards to all club members. They can visit www.rotary.org/globalrewards from a computer or download the Rotary Club Locator App to use the program on mobile devices.
Post a "Rewards" link to www.rotary.org/globalrewards on your club and district websites. This gives members easier access to Rotary Global Rewards.
Encourage club members to post offers on Rotary Global Rewards.
Suggest that club members help the program grow in their communities by asking local merchants to post offers.

VERY IMPORTANT - Whoozin our Weekly Meeting Book-in System

We are now fully operational with our new system for registering for our weekly dinner meetings. Called Whoozin, this program is used by other local Rotary Clubs with great success.

To make it easy for everyone I have prepared a Whoozin User Manual which is stored on Clubrunner under "Club Documents" that you will be able to print off if you wish.

In Summary the way it will work is:-

You will receive an initial email invitation each Monday for the following week's meeting.
You can immediately accept or decline, leave until later.
You will receive a reminder email on the Friday Prior
You will have until Midnight Sunday to register your RSVP and can change your decision right up until the closing time.
You can register up to 5 guests
You can specify any Special Dietary requirements
Please Note that if you do not register your intentions you will be charged for the dinner fee.

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable

to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.

This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

How to Book in for our Dinner Meeting?

For Members, Partners and guests of Members

you will receive email invitations to each meeting via Whoozin.
It will be your responsibility to RSVP using Whoozin by Midnight on the day prior to the meeting.
The only exception to this will be if you are expecting to be out of internet connectivity for an extended period.
In this instance you can notify Richard Mierzejewski at LET Surfcoast on 03-5261 2777 by 4.00pm on the Saturday prior to the Monday Meeting.
Please Note there is NO Answering Service on this number.
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to RSVP for the extra number of person/s who will be attending.
If no RSVP is registered as per the above process, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the usual dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

For Visitors to the Club

Any Visitors not being registered as a guest of a Member must call Richard Mierzejewski at LET Surfcoast on 03-5261 2777 to Book in. RSVP's must be made no later than 4.00PM on the Saturday prior to the Meeting
