Presidents Report

Mackenzie tells me that you all had a good time without me last night.  Well, I had a good time without you!

I attended the first meeting of Geelong and region Presidents, conducted by Assistant Governor Ross Taylor who is great at running a tight and timely meeting. We then went out for a dinner and took our time for further discussion. They are a very energetic and innovative bunch and the full record of the meeting will come in due course, but I want to tell you of issues and ideas raised.

Club Strengthening Public Relations Grant applications that most Clubs have applied for are generally successful and will be announced in the near future.

Paul Harris Fellowships: There has been historically an issue regarding the awarding of  Paul Harris Fellowships insofar that they should be earned not just awarded.  Jane wants to clarify that they are indeed awarded to the deserving, and they can be also provide an acknowledgement of a contribution to Foundation.  She urges us to check out the myriad work of the Rotary Foundation by checking out the Rotary International Website and read the Foundation section

Sustainability & Conservation: Highton is concerned that there is insufficient engagement with sustainable activities.  A group discussion suggested supporting ideas such as the solar lights provided to Ugandan villages (an idea by a Geelong school girl), a Rotary version of the boomerang bags as has been established in Torquay, for the Geelong supermarkets.  These projects also show the public that Rotary is a progressive and socially aware organisation.

Insurance:  The District has not yet been able to finalise Insurance as they are awaiting confirmation from the Insurer.  So for every event that we run we should contact Don Sheils to write out a Certificate of Currency. A risk assessment (downloaded from the District website) should be completed for every new event, and initially for an event that will be repetitive eg BBQ
.
Ride the Bellarine: $17,800 was raised, which, once enhanced by the Rotary Foundation, will grow to $53,500.  There was further funds raised through sponsorship on the website and $315.85 has been allocated to each of the local clubs. The committee, comprising representatives from across the 15 Rotary Clubs, needs more expertise in the areas of event management & marketing.  If you have this sort of expertise, you can call or email Tony Stewart (0416-023-321 or tonystewart48@bigpond.com), who is the secretary of the committee.
Gifting Cards: There
are new cards  being designed that can be purchased in memory or to acknowledge a significant event, or even to give to Speakers.  Each card states that a gift of $xx is being given by the Rotary Club in memory/celebrate/thank the recipient. Proceeds can go to Polio research, Australian Rotary Health or Foundation.

RYDA:  Driver Education for Secondary students. Has been running in other states and parts of Victoria and is very successful. They are looking for local Clubs to get involved.  The program is attached to local schools. There is no cost. In NSW they have talks from people who have suffered permanent injury as a result of a MCA, Beer Goggles, Police and driving experiences, as well as the opportunity to get learner hours up.
National Youth Science Forum:  There has been some changes to the application process which is now under review. Last year there appears to be mainly applications from Private school students.  The students are encouraged to apply by the School science co-ordinator.
Team Memberships
There is discussion with Bendigo Bank having a trial team membership with a Geelong Rotary Club.  One staff member would become a full member and 3 others would become Friends of Rotary.
Rotary Mentoring Program: Belmont are seeking approval to providing Mentoring to Tradespeople. Studies have shown that there is considerable business failure and depression amongst the trades because they have little or no skill and support in regards to business management and planning. Rotarians interested in becoming a mentor can contact Warren Norton or Andrew Jones.

I look forward to seeing you next Monday night when we hear the story of Lesley Shedden.  I think there is a very good yarn behind that serene demeanor.  Thereafterr we will be having a Board meeting so please let myself or any of the Board know of any issues or ideas you may have.

Guest Speaker Tony Allan – I’m so lucky to be alive

Transplant survivor’s 21 great years
This is Organ Donor Awareness Week and we at Rotary were very fortunate to have Tony tell us of his life changing surgery. At the age of 28 years tony suffered a heart attack, his heart was three times the size that it should have been. He was given 12 months to live and put on the transplant list.
He dropped dead at work while waiting for the transplant and some colleagues did CRP and got him going again. He was given an implant and survived on that whilst waiting for nine months before receiving his organ match.
Just a few weeks later he was given his transplant and continues to astound his doctors. Visits are made every six months for check-ups. He spent a year recovering then went back to work. He played cricket up until this year and plays golf to keep fit.
Dr Helen Opdam has stated that that despite their ability to save and transform lives, families only agree to their lost loved ones becoming a donor in 60per cent of eligible cases. “You are far more likely to receive a transplant than ever become a donor”!

Fireside Chats

Fireside Chats are coming up on Monday 17th August and I have 4  Volunteer Host homes which will probably be ok.

To assist with planning, can all Rotarians please  respond to the "Accept" or "Decline" invitation sent out by email today.

Each host will choose whatever format they prefer for their dinner.

They  can either:-

  • Cater the entire meal yourself with guests sharing the costs
  • Have the guests bring different courses of the meal - sharing the work load (no one pays)
  • Outsource the catering and sit back and enjoy the conversation (share the costs)
  • come up with your own ingenious and entertaining plan
So you will be allocated to each of these homes & hosts will tell you what is happening

INTERPLAST NEWS

DG Jane,

I am very proud to formally notify you that Rtn. Ass. Prof. John Richmond of the Rotary Club of Ballarat West has been booked to travel with an Interplast program to Suva in November this year.

You will probably remember that the District raised over $50,000 in the two Rotary years 2012-13 and 2013-14, which entitled D9780 to nominate an observer on such a program. John will present a report on this trip when he returns, and will be an asset to our District committee.

Our committee has set out to raise such funds again over the two year period 2014-5 and 2015-6. Our major fund-raiser will be a raffle, which will be launched at the District Conference 2016, and drawn at the District Changeover, and which we hope to raise $9,000

Many thanks

John Oswald

Chairman Interplast Committee D9780 2015-6

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
