President's Report No 43

I would first of all, on behalf of all Torquay Rotarians, offer our condolences to Rhonda and John on their tragic and distressing family loss. It is hard to comprehend how such events can impact on those who suffer such losses – rest assured Rhonda and John that we are here for you in your time of need.

Our thoughts are also with Charmaine D’Souza who is hospitalised with a large blood clot in her leg. She is in good care and, again, Vernon we are here for you.

Monday evening was a special event as members of Rotary Leadership Institute were visiting in order to present a Paul Harris Fellow to Howard Randall in recognition of his significant contribution to that organisation. We did try to keep the presentation ‘secret’ but Howard sussed out what was happening. It all went to plan though with Howard and Jill’s daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter present to witness the presentation. Congratulations Howard – well deserved!

We met at Kithbrooke Park Lifestyle Village, thankyou Kelly for organising the fantastic venue as the Lion’s Village was still unavailable due to kitchen renovations. Thanks also to Jan for constant changes to the Running Sheet – details were being modified right up to the last moment – well done!

Monday, May 6 we are back at the lion’s Village for our usual meeting and ‘Focus on Youth – RYLA participants’ will be the theme for the evening with special guests Mitchell Ladhams and Pia Pegg.

Cheers!!!
Trevor

Stories
Rotary Leadership Institute

Last Monday we enjoyed another change of meeting venue to Kithbrooke Park due to the delay in completion of the new kitchen at the Lions Village, in fact Rodney and Lorraine appeared quite at home in the impressive kitchen at Kithbrooke Park.

Most of the founding members of RLI in District 9780 visited our Club to acknowledge the contribution of Howard Randall to the RLI program.
PP Howard Randall has been recognised with a PHF 3 sapphires for his role in bringing RLI to Australia in 2008. Together with PDG Cathy Roth and PP Warren Norton, Howard helped pioneer this grass roots learning program , which is now running in every district in Australia and New Zealand.

Established in 1994 to assist in improving the Rotary knowledge and leadership skills of the future leaders of clubs and districts, the Rotary Leadership Institute is a multi-district program (division) already functional in many Zones around the world.

The Australia-Southern Division was formed in 2008. The institute offers a training program in three full-day sessions, in the future to be followed by graduate seminars.
RLI is a facilitated learning process following the principles of adult learning.  A structured curriculum is followed, and participants are required to be fully involved in discussion, research, presenting and a range of learning activities.  In fact, feedback from the participants indicates attending different venues on different days (as they may not have been available on a given day) is an added value for them to meet other Rotarians and learn with them.
All facilitators are experienced Rotarians who have completed RLI and also completed the RLI Facilitator's Training.  Each venue may have different Facilitators on different days subject to availability – although the preference is to provide continuity.

The focus of the program is on the participants rather than on a presenter, as RLI is about learning and developing skills and definitely not a lecture.
It is fast-paced, cooperative learning at its best, with Rotary knowledge, leadership skills, public speaking, public relations, membership and fun all rolled into 3 one-day sessions.

Participating in RLI may be the most important Rotary training you undertake, informing you, empowering you as a leader and creating a network of other Rotarians from many Clubs around the District.

World Malaria Awareness Day 25th April

Although World Malaria Day was held last week, on 25th April,
The following link is of an interview by Dave Pearson, the National RAM Manager, with Fiona Wylie from ABC Statewide NSW about Malaria Awareness Day. The interview goes for about 15 minutes and can be picked up at 1hr 8mins and goes through to about 1hr 23mins. The interview contains a lot of interesting, up to date information and is well worth the time spent listening to it.

Support Rodney on The Ride of His Life - to The Rock

On the 7th of September at 6.22am I will be leaving on a little journey from port Douglas in North Queensland to my final destination of THE ROCK (ULURU).YES I'm doing the Race To The Rock
I've made the choice to attempt this somewhat crazy event. As the saying goes
"Miles are my meditation"
and this has what has got me here.
So I've created this page because I want to make a difference. I want to raise awareness and support for both young males who have been touched buy mental illness as well as those in particular the young male carers like myself. I have been a main support and carer for my wife over the last 11 years and have been very isolated with minimal support until I found wellways . I'm inspired by the work of Wellways Australia Limited and wanted to support them by raising money. All money raised will go to this group to give opportunities for these young men to access activities and support Please help me by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about Wellways Australia Limited , the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!
