Presidents Report

So this is Christmas! Or nearly. First, we had some important business to attend to before we throw a party.  Our Youth Exchange student Liam Binyon. How good was his presentation? Liam you are on an exciting adventure and we will watch you as you travel and explore, and we too will enjoy your journey.

As I write I am listening to the news about the Paris Climate Change agreement.  Regardless of any argument, it will be good to tread more lightly and the Club's support of Battery recycling  is another means of contributing to a cleaner earth. Thank you Rudi Schols for your hard work on this project and well done on obtaining a Shire Award to fund the purchase of the used battery containers.

Thank you for the flowers you sent me this week. A year has passed and I am full of gratitude to those who supported me and my family in so many, many, many ways.

Please be sure to check your BBQ Roster dates and the upcoming Book Fair Volunteers & Books are needed. You will find links for both of these in other articles below. Also volunteers for the Cadel Ride will be important in January.

We look forward to a summery Christmas with lots of friendship and fun, so to get the season underway, bring your bare feet and a Kris Kringle on Tuesday to the Bowls Club for our Christmas bash.

Outbound Exchange Student Liam Binyon

Liam set to be a gift to the world

Torquay teenager Liam Binyon is planning to pack his soccer boots but leave his boardshorts behind when he heads off to Canada next month on a year-long Rotary youth exchange program.

Sponsored by the Torquay Rotary Club, the Year 11 Surf Coast Secondary College student is looking forward to meeting his host club in Mississauga, Ontario, and his classmates at Streetsville Secondary School.

“It looks like my kind of school – if the soccer photo on the website is anything to go by,” Liam says.

“I’ll be staying with the Ngo family for the first three months and going to the same school as the two children – Minh who is my age, 17, and MaiLee who is 14. Both play soccer so we already have something in common.”

A sports nut, Liam grew up playing AFL, including several seasons with the Torquay Tigers, before joining the Surf Coast Football Club last year. He hopes to keep up his soccer skills while trying some new sports, such as ice hockey, snowboarding and dogsledding.

“I can’t wait to try all things Canadian and also to introduce them to a few Aussie things, like Vegemite, AFL including my team the mighty Hawks, and Bells Beach.”

Torquay Rotary President Amanda Hough last week presented Liam with his official blazer and a surprise bon voyage gift: a fair dinkum Akubra hat.

“We all hope you have a fantastic time in Canada and do everyone in Torquay proud as an ambassador for Australia – and for Rotary. Be a gift to the world,” said Amanda.

District 9780 e-Club

Rotary eClub District 9780

The questions and interest in the eclub on Monday night was very reassuring. The following is a summary of my report.

The first Rotary eClub was charted in January 2002, so this is not a new concept for Rotary.  There are now 264 eclubs around the world.  This will be the first eClub for District 9780.  DG Jane Cox has appointed me to be the District Governor special representative to head up the work for the groundwork to form this eClub.

An eClub has 5 key goals:
  1. To retain Rotarians who would otherwise be lost to Rotary
  2. To attract new Rotarians
  3. To facilitate meetings
  4. To manage service projects
  5. For friendship by creating a friendly community of likeminded Rotarians

The point of difference is that an eClub uses digital technology to collaborate and communicate.  Interestingly email would NOT be a major part of this as most which is well superseded by more efficient technologies.  The requirement is that the members meet online at least once a week rather than in the more traditional means.
In most other respects the operation of the club is the same as a regular club and all members are Rotarians in the full sense of the word.
At this point in time we have a list of 46 names which is growing.  It is attracting interest from people who are excited about community service, but do not have the time or interest to be part of a more traditional club for whatever reason.  The initial target area is the Great Ocean Road – Torquay to Apollo Bay and then beyond.  PP Jeanette Crowther and Rob Harris (Bendigo Bank) should be commended for their efforts to establish this concept in this district.
An app for use on Mobile devices and also can be used on a computer has been developed and ready have all those on the list to be given access to this.  The chat function enables the setup of multiple rooms for discussion on different topics.  The first one is “about Rotary”.
As mentioned on Monday night, on behalf of the District Governor Jane Cox I would invite the Rotary Club of Torquay to become a sponsor club.  At this point in time a support in principle is required. This support could include a referral of potential members who were not able to join the existing club.  I cannot forsee the need for any more financial support at this point in time. PE Lesley has also offered her technical support which is greatly appreciated.
This concept is about part of the future of Rotary in this district and globally. Your challenge is to embrace and support the concept even if you cannot relate to it on a personal level.
Please feel free to discuss any aspect of this with me.  eclub@rotary9780.org

Our Club has been asked by Cadel's Manager Jason Bakker, and the event organisers, , to assist with providing volunteers for the Cadel Evans Road Race in January.

Whilst January is a busy time in all of our lives, the more Rotarians, Friends, and Family that we are able to muster to help will be valuable as our Club continues negotiations to secure Cadel for a Sportspersons Fundraiser Event next year. If you a re a member of a local Probus Club and can possibly engange their members for this event then that would be of enourmous assistance to help our cause as well.

INTERNATIONAL RAWCS PROJECT  NUMBER 53 : VOLUNTEER APPEAL
Our club has the possibility of joining an experienced Rotary team leader, Barry Tennent from the Rotary Club of Rockhampton Fitzroy,  to work on schools and hospital buildings in Munda and Noro areas, Western Province, Solomon Islands early in 2016.
Barry has done 19 previous RAWCS projects, not just in the Solomons, but in Sri Lanka, PNG and Cambodia.
He has already worked at 15 different schools in this area of the Solomons and has found that most do not have basic drinking water, toilets, electricity or books for a library, so the needs are very real.

Gerard Mc Namara has already  put up his hand so we are seeking 3 more volunteers. An electrician and plumber would be wonderful but anyone with DYI experience or other trade skills will be welcome. If we can't find club members, perhaps you know "tradies" who would like to go?

TIMING: Sometime Last week of April or First week of May 2016 for 2 weeks. Weather is much the same all year round.
ACCOMODATION: At a resort (A/C in rooms) where all meals can be bought at the restaurant or can be purchased at local stalls and markets.
ANY FUN? Barry arranges to take teams to see the local sights during their time off.
FUNDING: We are hoping the club will subside some of the travel and accommodation costs but each volunteer will still need to contribute at least $1,500 plus buy their own food.

If you would like to volunteer for this wonderful project, please contact International Director, Gaynor Schols (Phone 0438 364 399)

Gateways Christmas gift wrapping update

Thank you to those volunteers who have already offered their time to support our Christmas gift wrapping at Westfield this year!

This is a fantastic fundraiser for us to help us continue providing children and adults with a disability and their families the extra support they need. This year will hopefully be the biggest yet, as we’re very excited that our year long term community partner Westfield Geelong are very generously matching every dollar raised up to $5,000!

We are still looking for volunteers who would like to help out to fill a number of shifts. View a copy of the latest roster showing the available times here. If you or anyone that you know might be able to help fill these it would be greatly appreciated! Please call Toni Wilson on 5221 2984 or email volunteer@gateways.com.au

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
