President's Report No 48

Sunday 4th June
What a lovely changeover lunch we had at Pako Raw, thanks to Maggie and her family for organising and hosting the event.

I’d again like to thank the board and all members again for making 2017/18 such a great Rotary year.  I can’t believe it’s almost over!

As announced, our club was recognised by District Governor Ray Herbert for the following:
ENVIRONMENTAL/HERITAGE PROJECTS:
  • Tree planting at Deep Creek & Recycling batteries & bulbs
    COMMUNITY SERVICE ACHIEVEMENT:
  • The Torquay Motor Show
    YOUTH SERVICE ACHIEVEMENT:
  • Supporting Lorne P-12 exchange to St Teresa, Northern Territory
    INTER-CLUB PROJECTS:
  • Storage Shed with Lions
  • ANZAC day with RSL
  • Ride the Bellarine
  • Geelong Expo

Thanks to ADG Judy Beasley for attending and participating in Trevor’s induction.

It was a great honour for me to recognise Lesley Shedden and Rhonda Anchen with Paul Harris Fellows for their service to our Club. Congratulations!

I don’t have much to report from Cobram and the High Country this week and we will continue with “business as usual” until our new President Trevor Pickles returns from Spain in mid-July.

Please remember that our Next Meeting back at the Lions Village will be on 18th June as Monday 11th is Queen’s Birthday so there will be NO MEETING. I hope you all have a relaxing break.
President Gaynor Schols

40 Pairs of Socks Appeal

President Gaynor mentioned at a recent meeting about collecting socks for the homeless and that the Salvation Army Officers would distribute to those in need

I am happy to collect as many pairs of socks as we can contribute at the next meeting on 18th June and get them to the Salvation Army.

On their last visit to Elstoft House the Salvation Army informed us that there were up to 80 homeless within our region. I for one know that I have found the nights to be pretty chilly of late and I am extremely grateful that I have warm clothes and a roof over my head

The staff and residents at work are busy knitting beanies and have already sent in over thirty scarves. They decided that we could make up Care Bags with a scarf, beanie and socks, for the homeless. A lovely idea I thought

I will arrange to get the Salvation Army to come and collect these bags from Elstoft House.

With your amazing generosity do you think we could collect 40 pairs of socks?

Hoping you can help us to achieve this goal.

Linda Neale

(ed....FYI I discovered today there are many socks heavily discounted at Woolworths Nth Torquay)

Club 30th Anniversary Photos
Most of you were quite captivated with the Photos that were shown at our Clubs 30th Anniversary Party and expressed an interest in obtaining a copy of the presentation.
Whilst we could upload these pics to the cloud so that you can access them I'm sure you will agree that there's nothing quite like having a copy of your own on a USB memory stick. So.....we have purchased a quantity of 16gb Memory Sticks and Rotary Club of Torquay etched Key Tags (see pic below)
These will be available at a cost of $10 and will be able to pick up at our Changeover Lunch next weekend.

Bruce on Ferry to Bellagio.

Hi Everyone,
We are still continuing on our journey, lots of fun, new experiences, magnificent historical places, priceless views, excellent accommodation and food.
Thank you to everyone who encouraged us to follow this itinerary and for the helpful hints and advice.
Croatia was amazing, we then went to Venice.
Lots to tell including getting lost on the way to our hotel from the water taxi at 1.00am!
Next stop Mantua in the Mantova District for Julie to track down some history on her great, great, great grandfather who was born there.
What a surprise, we had never really heard of the place and it was really jumping. Lots to see and do and heaps of memorable sights.
Back on the train to Bellagio on lake Como, breathtaking! After four days relaxing we headed off early this morning to Monterosso in Cinque Terre. Arrived at 4.00pm and settled in to the Hotel Pasquale overlooking the ocean. (Thank’s Clem and Jim for the recommendation). Just about to go for dinner at 7.00pm have had nothing since breakfast.
Hope everyone is well, home in Torquay next Saturday.
Bruce and Julie

Last Chance to Contribute to Foundation this Year

OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTIONS
Time is running out for clubs and Rotarians to contribute to Our Rotary Foundation for this 1718 year. Last year we had a great response with nearly every club and nearly one in two Rotarians directly contributing to our Rotary Foundation. So far this year, we are behind in contributions to support our Rotary Programs; Polio eradication, etc and remember 50% of annual fund contributions fund our district programs as DDF. We need your contributions in my hands by 21st of June at latest to accrue them in this club year, so please allow for postage time which unless send express post, normal mail will take days. Forms are available from district web site.
http://www.rotary9780.org/SitePage/rotary-foundation then download the required form from Foundation Giving & Recognitions on LHS. One of the highlighted forms below will meet your needs.

A Little Humor

JUST IMAGINE...

If you had bought $1000 worth of Qantas shares one year ago.
You would have made $49.00 today.
If you had bought $1000 worth of AIG shares one year ago.
You would have made $33.00 today.
If you had bought $1000 worth of Lehman Brothers Shares one year ago.
You would have made $0.00 today.

BUT.... If you purchased $1000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer then returned the cans for recycling.
You would have made $214.00 today.
So based on above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily and recycle!!

AND DID YOU KNOW......
A recent study found that the average Australian walks 900 miles a year.
Another study found the average Australian consumes 22 gallons of alcohol a year.

That means on average AUSSIES get 41 miles to the gallon.

MAKES YOU PROUD TO BE AN AUSSIE. DOESN’T IT??

Rotary Global Rewards Program

Rotary Global Rewards, our member benefits program, offers discounts on products and services from local and global
merchants, along with opportunities to give back to Rotary.

Over 33,000 members have signed in to use Rotary Global Rewards. To raise awareness of this program, you can:
  1. Recommend Rotary Global Rewards to all club members. They can visit www.rotary.org/globalrewards from a computer or download the Rotary Club Locator App to use the program on mobile devices.
  2. Post a "Rewards" link to www.rotary.org/globalrewards on your club and district websites. This gives members easier access to Rotary Global Rewards.
  3. Encourage club members to post offers on Rotary Global Rewards.
  4. Suggest that club members help the program grow in their communities by asking local merchants to post offers.
You can find instructional videos, how-to-guides, and promotional materials on the Rotary Global Rewards page of My Rotary.  If you have any questions about the program, write to rotaryglobalrewards@rotary.org.

VERY IMPORTANT - Whoozin The New Weekly Meeting Book-in System

We are now fully operational with our new system for registering for our weekly dinner meetings. Called Whoozin, this program is used by other local Rotary Clubs with great success.
To make it easy for everyone I have prepared a Whoozin User Manual which is stored on Clubrunner under "Club Documents" that you will be able to print off if you wish.

In Summary the way it will work is:-
  • You will receive an initial email invitation each Monday for the following week's meeting.
  • You can immediately accept or decline, leave until later.
  • You will receive a reminder email on the Friday Prior
  • You will have until Midnight Sunday to register your RSVP and can change your decision right up until the closing time.
  • You can register up to 5 guests
  • You can specify any Special Dietary requirements
  • Please Note that if you do not register your intentions you will be charged for the dinner fee.
If you have any problems please free to contact myself Greg Plumridge 0418521321 or Michael Reed 0418524315 for details on how to work the program.
