The Start Port Douglas 17th Sept 2019 Tough terrain from Day 1 Monday Night Rodney Sullivan gave us an insight to the "Race to the Rock" that he began on the first Saturday of September, 7 September 2019 at 6:22am. From what Rodney told us the 2,400klm "Race" sounded incredibly gruelling. An event where you are totally on your own needing to carry all of your own food supplies, clothing sleeping gear, medical requirements and maintenance items for the bike with no support crew to follow and assist. An event where only a handful out of the nearly 30 starters actually make it to the finish line each year. That gives some indication of just how testing the event is on man/woman and machine. The course itself, at times required pushing the bike up hills so steep you could barely keep your footing and carrying the bike and your belongings across rivers and creeks attempting to keep everything above the waterline. Rodney had brought his purpose built bike along to show us, just as he ran it in the event and unpacked everything to demonstrate his level of preparation for every eventuality which was extremely interesting to see just how much gear and technology can be packed so light and compact into small spaces. Pondering some of the basic challenges of ensuring that you have a suitable supply of drinkable water to surive hot outback conditions where there will be no shops for several hundred klms left us all stunned. Unfortunately all of the physical work out of the saddle in the early days of the event bad begun to take a toll on Rodney's hip but amazingly despite all of his great preparation it was ultimately the failure of his state of the art technology EPIRB Safety Beacon that forced Rodney's retirement near the end of week one just as he was about to go deep into the outback and "off the grid" with no phone service for possibly a week or more. With all of the possible things that could happen in remote Australia when totally alone, no-one could blame Rod for pulling our at that point. Rodney's efforts have not been in vein as he has managed to raise several thousand dollars to be donated to Wellways, a mental health support organisation that has been of enormous assistance to Rod and Kylie in their own lives. Rodney intends to direct these funds to assistance for carers of family members who are affected by mental health problems. I am confident that Rodney will hit the outback tracks again to take on another challenge sometime soon, he may not be "Racing to the Rock" but it will no doubt be something almost as challenging. After all he has the bike, all of the gear and loads of enthusiasm, and we will all be there to cheer him on! ___________________ |
