President's Report No 37

Monday 19th March 2018

It was a pleasure to award Greg Plumridge the “STAR OF THE MONTH” for March and April. Greg not only puts in a fantastic effort for the Motor Show but he gets the bulletin out every week no matter what. He has launched “Whoozin” our new RSVP program, walked for our Relay for Life team from 2-5AM on Friday night and is now organising “Ride the Bellarine” for Polio Plus. Our PR director really makes a great contribution to this club!

Congratulations to Gerard McNamara who was presented with his 7th Paul Harris Fellow. He was first presented with a PHF by the Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra in 2002 and again by our club in 2017 but the other recognitions are for his personal contributions to the Rotary Foundation. What a great example of Rotarians giving what they can to Rotary each year.

It was fantastic to welcome five guests at this meeting. Karan Dawson who accompanied Geoff, Ben Featherstone who will be applying for membership, Sue Reilley from Aireys 8 Coastal Retreat, Paul Moran from Surf Coast Travel and Cruise and our guest speaker, Dr Laura Walsh. Sue, Paul and Laura are all members of BNI, originally introduced by Rotarian Jess Nowson.
Laura is a local osteopath and director of Quay Osteo, 29 Boston Rd. She spoke to us on the importance of positive exercise as we age and showed us 3 simple exercises to do each day to keep our joints flexible.

Thanks to all members who walked for our Rotary team in the Relay for Life on 17/18 March, which raises much needed funds for the Cancer Council. A special thanks to Graham and all the Gill family for their dedication to this cause.

Some Points from the Board Meeting, 19th March
  • We still need helpers for the mid-year book fair (8-11 June). We will reassess viability next month when all members have responded about their availability.
  • The board approved our membership of BNI Coastal Connections. This means a Rotarian must attend BNI meetings every Thursday from 7.30-9am. Will volunteers please contact Gaynor.
  • Donations were approved for Parkinsons Australia, Prostate Cancer Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Geelong Inc., Winchelsea Primary literacy grant and the Rotary Foundation.
  • Linda Neale will coordinate shoe boxes of toiletries for fire affected area
  • The International Global Grant project to train a female prosthetist for Vaiola, Tonga was approved in principle.
  • Our club will also support projects agreed by the International Directors of Group 9 &10 (Geelong Region). Our representative is Lesley Shedden.
  • Lesley Shedden will submit an application for a district grant to refurbish our BBQ trailer.
  • Rudi will not be an active member next Rotary year so the board is seeking a treasurer. Please contact PE Trevor Pickles if you are interested in this vital role.

District 9780 Appeal for Fire Victims
On Thursday 21st March our club contributed $2000 to help the victims of the Western District Bush Fires.

    Monday 26th March
    We will have three speakers:
-Jace Healy from Lorne P-12 College will tell us about the VCAL project to Alice Springs that we have agreed to fund for $1000.
-John Macdonald and Peter Lendfers will speak about the plan to train a female prosthetist for Tonga.
-Colin McDonald will update us on the water filters in Kalimpong which we funded.
It should be a very busy and interesting meeting!

Stories
Chairman's Report

Last Monday we received an interesting, entertaining and thought provoking talk from local Torquay Osteopath Dr Laura Walsh.

Laura gave us some thoughts on looking after our bodies as we age, some positives for us all were that she does not recognise the O.. word, age is just a number and we basically are what we eat.

She believes that our well being relies on four major things, being -  Attitude, Flexibility/Mobility, Strength/Energy and Nutrition.

Balance and co ordination are most important as is a positive ageing process.

Laura then had us all practice three simple mobility exercises that can even be performed sitting down.

There were lots of questions and I am sure that most of us are now even more aware of the importance of our health and well being

Bush Fire Shoe Box Appeal for Toiletries

Most of you will be aware of the fires that caused so much anxiety and destruction within our District last weekend. Some people have not only lost their homes but their livelihoods as well ,others have lost their livelihood.

I would like to ask for your support and help to collect toiletries and we will fill shoe boxes for the fire victims.

The staff and residents at my work mecwacare Elstoft House have started to collect toiletries as they did late last year when we supported farmers in the Loddon Region. The response within three days has been amazing. I am so proud of my staff and they way they have wanted to support this cause

Will you please help support this cause and see how many shoe boxes we can fill?

If you would like and are creative maybe you could decorate shoe boxes - adds a personal touch to the exercise

I will bring a box to Rotary on Monday night for you to put any toiletries you would like to donate in to, alternatively items may be dropped to Surf Coast LET at 5/15 Bell St, Torquay

Thanking you in anticipation

Linda Neale
