Presidents Report

Last week we managed to squeeze in two meetings on the one night.  We started with a Special General Meeting (SGM) which was necessary to formalise changes to Board responsibilities for the 2015/2016 Rotary year.
The new Board is as follows:
President                                           Amanda Hough
President Elect 2016/2017                Lesley Shedden
Vice President                                   Gerard McNamara
Secretary                                           Mal Slater (John McDonald assisting)
Treasurer                                           Graham Gill (Peter Bollen assisting)
Director Club Service                       Vacant Portfolio
Director Community Service           Mike Reed (Darrel Brewin assisting)
Director International Service         Gaynor Schols (Lloyd James assisting)
Director Vocational Service              Lesley Shedden (Kathryn McNamara assisting)
Director Youth Service                      Chris Sims

Once the formalities were complete the SGM was closed and the Club meeting opened. Our stand-in Sergeant Trevor brown did an excellent job in separating Rotarians from their cash.  After dinner we heard from PE Amanda about her aspirations for 2015/2016.  Michael Reed then spoke about volunteer responsibilities for the looming Ride the Bellarine event.  We were also reminded about the Happy Hour night at the Slater's residence on the coming Friday.  All in all it was a good night with much camaraderie.

Please be aware that this weeks meeting is a PARTNERS NIGHT and it will be assumed that your partner is coming unless you apologise for them.

Well that's all from me for now."

Yours in Rotary Service,
Gerard McNamara

The smiles say it all! A HUGE thanks to the club for once again hosting our annual day at the beach for the Strathewen Primary School community.

This year saw 30 kids, five staff and eight parents making the trek down, all smiles from the moment the bus arrived. And those smiles did not let up all day with everyone enjoying the opportunity to frolic in the surf, ramble on the beach and chow down on our famous sausages in bread (vegie burgers for non-meat-eaters), Lorraine's yummy coleslaw (even coleslaw-haters loved it!), yummier sweet treats, fruit, juice and water. We even did a coffee run for the adults, culminating in a barista race on the beach to ensure hot coffee for the group at Rocky Point!

Special thanks to Mal, John, Graham G, Alan, Mary for working hard to keep everyone well-fed and watered, and to Kev, Ray and Patrick from Torquay Surfing Academy for ensuring a fun time for all in the surf. The only time we saw any frowns was when it was time to get out of the water.

The end of the day provided a particularly poignant moment when the two school captains gave an official thank you on the school's behalf, reminding us that they were preppies in 2009. While they will have left the school next year, there will still be students who were also there then - some have had to repeat years and others were toddlers first year but now in grade 3!

The fact is Black Saturday will be with this school community for many years to come. One only has to talk to Jane, the Principal, to realise the impacts still being felt - marriages failing, kids suffering anxiety disorders and other heartbreaking outcomes. She is so grateful when we contact her each year to offer what has become a much-needed circuit breaker for all concerned. Those of us who have been a part of this day always feel we get even more out of it in terms of being able to put smiles on the faces of some kids and adults who often don't have much to smile about.

So thank you one again everyone in Torquay Rotary. You rock!

Also we have invited Jane down to talk to the club and hope to lock in a date soon. Stay tuned!

Ride the Bellarine

On behalf of the Committee for the inaugural “Ride the Bellarine” I would like to thank you for your contribution to today’s event.

Particularly Brian Mynott who flew the flag as our Club's Representative riding the full 105klm  in atrocious weather even though he was carrying a severe dose of the Flu! Fantastic Job Brian. We will be running the sponsorship pledge form around again at tomorrow nights meeting for those of you who missed it last week. So if you would like to contribute to End Polio and show support for Brian's ride then this will be your last chance!

Despite the challenges the weather threw at us, all of the competitors that I spoke to during the event were unanimous that they had an enjoyable day, and are adamant that they will be back again next year with even more of their friends. Many competitors had come great distances to ride the event, one even from Canberra.

It was a very rewarding experience to see fellow Rotarians from all Geelong Clubs pool resources and working side by side. To those of you who endured bleak conditions out on the course marshalling, a special thank you, we could not have done it without you!

In coming weeks our Committee will hold a debrief of the event and will report back to you with the final wash-up of the funds raised to go back to District for End Polio.

As this was our first attempt at running this event we would welcome any feedback from you with suggestions.

Thank you again

Yours in Rotary

Greg Plumridge

A man and woman were married for many years.  Whenever there was a confrontation, yelling could be heard deep into the night.  The old man would shout, "When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!"
Neighbours feared him.

The old man liked the fact that he was feared.
Then one evening, he died when he was 98.
After the burial, her neighbours, concerned for her safety, asked, "Aren't you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way out of the grave and haunt you for the rest of your life?"
The wife said,  " Let him dig. I had him buried upside down...and I know he won't ask for directions.

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
  • REMEMBER on "Partners Nights" it is assumed that you partner IS attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence on travel is not an excuse.  It must be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book”.
