Presidents Report
Howard Randall did a great job of creating the World Cafe. It was a remarkably democratic and easy way to get input, creativity and opinions from all of us present.
Some of us, ie Graeme Kennedy and myself found ourselves clocking rather than clockwising, (or whatever) but that had its benefits too! I see the Directors are now putting together the suggestions put forward during the Cafe and they will be listed later in this Bulletin.
It gave me great pleasure as one of my first duties as President to induct Brian Brennan into our Club (finally) We welcome Brian and Catherine into our fold and look forward to their valuable contribution to our Club.
Again, a few more of you are off to the sunny north, so again, scoot! We'll hold the fort whilst you rest in the sun.
Our first Board meeting was held after last Monday's Club meeting. As was our intention, it was tightly run with everyone appearing to have done their pre-reading,and we were all home by 10pm. Thanks to the Board members for their succinct and professional communications. The minutes will be duly made available in some format for the Club members to peruse.
Next week we have the pleasure of having as our Speaker Von Slater, once a little child in the arms of Mal, now a Project Manager for a leading Construction company in Melbourne. She will be speaking about her role, career and the challenges & benefits of being a female in an historically male profession. Von is articulate and forthright and I am sure we will enjoy hearing what she has to say. If you know of a young woman who is seeking career guidance, please invite her to see and hear what is possible.
see you next Monday evening,
Amanda Hough

World Cafe
Last Monday our Club trialed a new exercise for District Trainer Howard Randall.
The exercise works like this:-
- The Directors for each of the Four Avenues of Rotary Service sit at separate tables.
- The members present then spread themselves equally around those tables
- A 5 minute Brainstorming session takes place with ideas proposed by the members to be considered for the Club.
- The Rotarians then move to the next Director/Table and the process is repeated
The ideas tabled will now be considered by the Directors/Board and the Club for implementation. A summary of some of these are listed below.
Can I suggest that if any of the Members who were not present last week have any further suggestions that they would like to contribute that these are directed to the relevant Director.
Thanks to all who participated.
Howard Randall
Youth - Chris Sims
All of the groups attending the Youth Services café table were very enthusiastic about the RCT expanding our involvement with the young people in our region at both the Primary and Secondary school levels and through projects and programs other than established Rotary programs.
Some comments:
-
Hands on involvement rather than just handing over $$
-
Young people and their parents encouraged to attend RCT meetings and participate in Rotary projects and events.
-
RCT involvement with youth groups and sporting clubs
-
RCT involvement with local school activities e.g. mock interviews
-
All schools in our area , not just Torquay schools, e.g. Winchelsea PS
-
Youth forums on such matters as Careers , Mental Health , Drugs , Managing Money.

OUR CLUB MEMBERS THOUGHTS ON INTERNATIONAL SERVICE
The brainstorming exercise on 13/7/15 produced the following ideas:
There were very mixed views on what percentage of club money should be allocated to International - between 10% and 50% (average 25%)
Most would prefer a well managed project in a nearby country (eg Solomon Islands, PNG etc, although Thailand and Nepal were also discussed)
Projects must have good supervision and accountability with checks for corruption. Projects should also focus on training and self-help in the community.
Volunteers on projects would be acceptable but there was a strong feeling that all costs should then be paid for volunteers.
Most felt funds should also be allocated to routine Rotary International Projects such as ROMAC, Interplast, Water Projects and Disasters and not all spent on volunteers. A Women's Education program was also discussed.
Communication with members should improve- What has happened in the last year? What is planned? Speakers that educate on visions and needs are important. Strong feeling that we should get on with something that would show results in this Rotary year.

Community Service Director
Vocational Service - Lesley Shedden
Notes and suggestions from the Workld Café brainstorming session.
Vocational Service
Directors – Lesley Shedden and Kathryn MacNamara
Summary
Vocational discussions carried a theme of getting to know better the local landscape – local businesses and our own club members – their vocational and business involvement, backgrounds and interests.
The second theme focused on vocation for youth and how we should not only build our knowledge, but also how we might assist young people as they strive for a vocation, including scholarships and mock interviews.
Details
An overall comment is to seek vocational inspiration from speakers and club visits which offer something different, informational and inspirational.

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?
Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!
Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence. This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.
There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022. An answering service operates out of hours.
-
All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
-
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.
Absence when away on travel is not an excuse. It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.

New app helps patients to stay on their meds
Hundreds of thousands of Australians who don’t take their heart medicines as prescribed can now better manage their dosage and routine through a new smart phone app launched by the National Heart Foundation of Australia.
The free My Heart, My Life app will help people keep track of and remember to take their medicines, while also providing health stats, enabling people to learn about heart attack warning signs and offering healthier recipes.
Heart Foundation’s National Director of Cardiovascular Health, Dr Rob Grenfell said the app will help patients manage their medication routine, increase their understanding of their condition and ultimately improve their health.
“We also know the app will assist GPs, pharmacists and primary care nurses to help their patients adhere to medicine and lifestyle changes,” Dr Grenfell said.
“Around 3.7 million Australians are living with cardiovascular disease - the number one killer of men and women, with a large number prescribed medications.
“We know the more medications people are taking, the more difficult it is to remember to take them.
“Within the app people can search a medicines database for medicines they are taking, which lists the dose and frequency for each medicine and it sets reminders to help people to take them.”
A Heart Foundation survey showed 5.5% of people are prescribed blood pressure medicines and 16% of people taking cholesterol medicines were not taking them regularly (i).
“This equates to around 600,000 people just for cholesterol and blood pressure medicines alone,” he said.
“Even more alarming is the fact we know approximately half of patients prescribed a cholesterol lowering drug, commonly known as a statin, will stop taking them within six months of starting their medicines.”
The app is available on iPhone, iPad or Android devices. Visit www.myheartmylife.org.auto download our app

A couple was having dinner one evening when the husband reached across the table, took his wife's hand in his and said, "Beth, soon we will be married 30 years, and there's something I have to know. In all of these 30 years, have you ever been unfaithful to me?"
Beth replied, "Well Charles, I have to be honest with you. Yes, I've been unfaithful to you three times during these 30 years, but always for a good reason." Charles was obviously hurt by his wife's confession, but said, "I never suspected. Can you tell me what you mean by 'good reasons'?"
Beth said, "The very first time was shortly after we were married, and we were about to lose our little house because we couldn't pay the mortgage. Do you remember that one evening I went to see the banker and the next day he notified you that the loan would be extended?"
Charles recalled the visit to the banker and said, "I can forgive you for that. You saved our home, but what about the second time?"
Beth asked, "And do you remember when you were so sick, but we didn't have the money to pay for the heart surgery you needed? Well, I went to see your
doctor one night and, if you recall, he did the surgery at no charge."
"I recall that," says Chuck. "And you did it to save my life, so of course I can forgive you for that. Now tell me about the third time."
"All right," Beth said. "So do you remember when you ran for president of your golf club, and you needed 73 more votes?"
