President's Report No 7

Hi folks,
What a week for sending out those ‘spring is nearly here’ vibes.  Don’t know about you but it was good to feel the sun on the body and clean fresh air, although a bit crisp some days.!  But to have a few days to get some dirt under the fingernails, and put some veggies in the garden, felt so good.

Last Mondays’ meeting had us all participating in a Cryptic Crossword thanks to our Zoom master Greg and the guidance of Catherine Eagleson, from the Rotary Club of Drysdale, 9780 Chair, Australian Rotary Health, Chief Puzzler, Clue Detective Puzzle Agency.  She is also known as an author of her own crossword & puzzle books, as well as numerous other talents...!

All the information and link connections are in the Bulletin, so, if you haven’t already, sign yourself up, take out a subscription and know that you will be contributing to raising much needed funds and having fun doing it, after all we can’t physically get out there to do our fundraising but we can sit comfortably in our own homes and help raise funds and keep our brains active with some great ‘brain food’..!

We have a special night coming up soon in our Programs and that is the welcoming to the club of Allan Hillgrove on Monday 31st August where I will Induct him into the Rotary Club of Torquay.  So have your glasses charged for a toast to Allan.  We also have the privilege of having DG Phil Beasley who is doing his rounds of visiting all clubs throughout the District 9780 zone, together with the District AG, David Sykes who will drop in for a few minutes.
The Rotary Club of Grovedale/Waurn Ponds has invited us as a club to help celebrate Ray Robilliard’s 50th Anniversary of membership and service in Rotary via Zoom on Wednesday 23rd September at 7pm.  We have a close association with this club, and it would be nice if we could be a part of their celebration for Ray, especially those who have known him for several years.

Tomorrow night we will have a Video Presentation from Dr Tony Bartone, President of AMA on COVID 19.  A special thank you to Alan Anderson and the Keilor Rotary Club for bringing this to our attention.

See you Monday night, in the meantime stay safe and well.
President Jansmiley

Let's Keep on Laughing

“My Colonoscopy”

I called my friend, Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy.  A few days later, in his office, Andy showed me a color diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis.

Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient manor.  I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really hear anything he said because my brain was shrieking, HE'S GOING TO STICK A TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!

I left Andy's office with some written instructions,  and a prescription for a product called "MoviPrep" which comes in box large enough to hold a microwave oven.

I will discuss Movi Prep in detail later, for now, suffice it to say that we must never allow it to fall in the hands of America's enemies.

I spent the next several days productively sitting around being nervous. I began my preparation.

In accordance with my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth,  which is basically water only with less flavor.

Then, in the evening, I took the MoviPrep. You mix two packets of powder together in a one liter plastic jug, then you fill it with luke warm water. (For those unfamiliar with the metric system a liter is about 32 gallons.)

Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon.

The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humor, state that after you drink it, 'a loose watery bowel movement may result.' This is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof you may experience contact with the ground.

MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be graphic, here, but have you ever seen the space shuttle launch?

This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle.

There are times when you wish the commode had a seatbelt.

You spent several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet.

After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep. The next morning my wife took me to the clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure,  but I have been experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage.

I was thinking, 'What if I spurt on Andy?" How do you apologized to a friend for something like that?

Flowers would not be enough.

At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging  that I understood and totally agreed with whatever the heck the forms said.

Then they led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you are actually naked.

Then a nurse named Edie put a little needle in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Edie was very good and I was already lying down.

Edie, also told me that some people put vodka in their MovePrep.

At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom, so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose Mode.

You would have no choice but to burn your house down.

When everything was ready, Edie wheeled me into the procedure room where Andy was waiting with the nurse and an anesthesiologist I did not see the 17,000 foot tube but I knew Andy had it hidden around there somewhere, I was nervous, seriously nervous at this point. Andy had me roll over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist begin hooking something up to the needle in my hand.

There was music playing in the room, and the song was "Dancing Queen" by Abba, I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be playing during this particular procedure, "Dancing Queen" has to be the least appropriate.

"You want me to turn it up" said Andy,  from somewhere behind me.  "Ha ha," I said. And then it was time, the moment I have been dreading for more than a decade.

If you are squeamish, prepare yourself, because I am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly what it was like.

I have no idea.  Really.  I slept through it. One moment, ABBA was yelling "Dancing Queen, feel the beat of the tambourine," and the next moment, I was back in the other room, waking up in a very mellow mood.

Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that it was all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colors.

I have never been prouder of an internal organ.

Great idea for a  Fundraiser
Everyone who joined in on Monday 10th August heard Catherine Eagleson speak about  joining the Clue Detective puzzle Agency and then joined in for some fun solving a puzzle together !!

For those who missed out you can relive the experience VIEW MEETING HERE

As Catherine explained solving puzzles is great activity and a real health benefit during COVID lockdown at the same time contributing to Lift the Lid , Mental health research and raising funds for the Torquay Rotary Club.

For only $59.95  annual subscription / just $5 a month, you can have fun with puzzles at the same time contributing to the Club's 2020 fundraising efforts . This is just one good idea for fund raising when we are are limited in our normal fundraising efforts such as BBQs , Bunnings etc

I would sincerely encourage you to join the puzzles and ask friends and family to join as well -

If we could as a Club sell a number of memberships , we could make a big difference our fundraising

Here is the link , where you can SUBSCRIBE

Do give it a try and help raise funds for Lift the Lid.

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.laugh

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
