President's Report No 14

Greetings one and all,
I do hope that everyone has had a lovely week and enjoyed the sunshine and warmth… Yay Spring has sprung, for a couple of days at least, but just getting outside in the fresh air just makes you feel better in some ways at least.

We/us/the Board, had a very full meeting last week full of ideas as to how we can look forward to getting back out there again and doing some fundraising and generally getting back together again as a club as well as out in the public arena meeting face to face.

You will by now have received or very soon at least, from Secretary Maggie, the Board update for your perusal.  There will be a few questions for you, as members, to consider and I trust you will do so before the next Board meeting to be held on

Monday 26th October with thanks.
This week we will welcome back as our guest speaker, David Goldsmith who will be speaking about the Dental Vans in Samoa, John Oswald will be chairing the meeting.  We funded the purchase of a portable X-Ray machine for the new dental department in the National Referral Hospital in Honiara, so it’ll be interesting to hear how that has been going as well as the completion of the program.

Now onto something extremely important…. How Mad can you make your hats…?  Yes it’s nearly ‘Lift the Lid’ night and we still have that goal of collecting at least $2,000 (although we donated $4,000 last year) in donations to go to Australian Rotary Health but considering the economic climate being as it is, we can still try..!  We have but 1 week to go before the winner is announced on Monday 12th October.  But in the meantime, if you can get your photos and donations entered ASAP by clicking on the link:  competition details and the entry form  or follow the Facebook page or follow the prompts on the Bulletin segment, that would be great.  We are hoping we will have everyone’s entries in by the latest, 5pm on Saturday 10th October.  The judging will then be done on the Sunday 11th October.  Good luck with it all and I look forward to seeing some great hats out there…!

That’s it from me for this week, see you all tomorrow night.
Keep well, keep safe
President Jansmiley

#27 Walks for Parkinsons - Join Pete's Pals Fundraiser Event

27 FOR PARKINSON’S

Torquay Rotary Club members have participated in the Parkinson's "WALK IN THE PARK " over  many years now to support Peter Bollen and his family

Unfortunately due to COVID we will be unable to join our own Peter Bollen as we have in recent years however we can join forces with Pete who will again be entering the Fundraising Team , "Pete's Pals"

Please help Pete reach the $1,000 fundraising target by sponsoring the team Sponsor Pete's Pals

  https://www.parkinsonswalk.org.au/my-fundraising/2606/petes-pals-

27 for Parkinsons will replace the traditional A Walk in the Park event, which cannot be held this year due to COVID-19 community restrictions and ongoing uncertainty over when and how people will be able to gather.

The concept of 27forParkinson’s is simple – we want people to get out and move at their own pace and walk 27 times, over 27 days, in October. The time, the location, the distance is up to you – taking into account any COVID-19 restrictions in place.

The event will officially start on 1 October, but you can register and start fundraising now just like Event Ambassador, the State Member for Lara and former Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren (click on the image to play the video)

“COVID-19 has changed the way we live in 2020,” said Parkinson’s Victoria CEO Emma Collin.

“A Parkinson’s diagnosis is life changing, but being resilient, adapting and arming yourself with knowledge is key to living life to the fullest. As is not facing the journey alone.”

27forParkinson’s aims to create a sense of togetherness within a community who understand and support each other. The event will also be an important fundraiser.

“Virtual fundraising events such as 27forParkinson’s are more important than ever, to raise funds for us to continue to provide the enhanced level of support required for those living with Parkinson’s during these challenging times,” she said.

To register or support a friend or family member taking part, visit the event website.

Great idea for a  Fundraiser
Everyone who joined in on Monday 10th August heard Catherine Eagleson speak about  joining the Clue Detective puzzle Agency and then joined in for some fun solving a puzzle together !!

For those who missed out you can relive the experience VIEW MEETING HERE

As Catherine explained solving puzzles is great activity and a real health benefit during COVID lockdown at the same time contributing to Lift the Lid , Mental health research and raising funds for the Torquay Rotary Club.

For only $59.95  annual subscription / just $5 a month, you can have fun with puzzles at the same time contributing to the Club's 2020 fundraising efforts . This is just one good idea for fund raising when we are are limited in our normal fundraising efforts such as BBQs , Bunnings etc

I would sincerely encourage you to join the puzzles and ask friends and family to join as well -

If we could as a Club sell a number of memberships , we could make a big difference our fundraising

Here is the link , where you can SUBSCRIBE

Do give it a try and help raise funds for Lift the Lid.

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.laugh

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.

Good Luck with the Challenge and I
