I'd be worried too Cynthia! Luckily President Peter only dresses like this when on the Blues Train!

Amanda Hough presents a banner from RC of Colombo Central, Sri Lanka

A number of Rotarians boarded the Blues (or should that be Booze) Train last Saturday night as part of the District 9780 Conference. It certainly was a great night with every one moving and grooving. I am not sure if it was the motion of the train or the beer and wine that caused the gyrations but there was plenty of dancing during the evening. The Flappers and Gangsters theme was also well received.

On Monday evening Gayle Chrisfield gave a shortened presentation on intensive animal farm. She showed graphic pictures of battery hens and pigs in sow stales. Gayle encouraged everyone to join Animals Australia and to support the work undertaken by this group to stop such inhumane practices.

Don’t forget our 25th Birthday celebrations at the football club rooms Torquay on Saturday night. Also take the time to have a look around at this facility as Club Members will be asked their views on relocating at the meeting on 29 April 2013. Also there is no meeting on Monday night 22 April 2013.

See you all on Saturday evening starting time is 6:30 for 7:00. There should be close to 100 guests there so it should be a great night.

We certainly had a busy night last week.  At the October Board meeting a donation of $1,000 to the Surfcoast U3A group was approved for the purchase of equipment.  A cheque was presented to representatives of U3A at our meeting.  Next on the agenda was the Club Annual General Meeting which is traditionally held in late November.  This meeting was presided over by our President Elect Jill Evans who did a great job in controlling the enthusiasm of the  audience.  There was much discussion about the annual dues and this was finally resolved.  Jill presented the names of those who nominated to serve on the Club Board for 2015/2016.  They were unanimously elected.  Congratulations to all of you.  Following the conclusion of the AGM the rest of the evening was taken up with a Club Assembly.  As part of this process members gathered together in groups to discuss various Club projects and activities. Greg Plumridge gave the Club an update on the Ride the Bellarine event which is being run by the combined clubs as a District 9780 project.
All in all it was a busy but successful night.  A hearty thanks to all those who participated

Yours in Rotary Service,

Congratulations to the Girls

This year the Annual Torquay Rotary Golf Day notched up a gear and was run as a Stableford Event. Whilst this is a more serious competition than has been held in recent years I am sure that Graeme Price would be proud to see the changes that have been made to both the course at which he spent much time playing the game, and the competition held in his honour.

Congratulations go to the team of Gail Rooney and Mary Armstrong who won this years event pictured here with the Graeme Price Perpetual Trophy. Thanks to the Event Organising Committee who ensured the success of the event this year and have plans to grow it going forward . We will provide a report to the club at a coming Club meeting detailing the profits from the event and the plans for next year

Lonnie Carland receives his cheque for the Fiji Housing trip       Steve Jewson presenting an overview of the Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club

ImageImage

Mr PIG - Chef, Historian and Comedian.....smiling as always!      President Jeanette presents a $1000 cheque to the JJSLSC as proceeds from the night

Monday night saw our club venture out for another community group visit, this time to the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club.

It was a busy program as those present, who included Assistant Governor Tony Stewart, were:-
a) brought up to speed with a presentation and a Q & A on the upcoming Dog Walk event to be held on 30th March
b) President  Jeanette  and International Service Director Gerard Mc Namara presented local Apprentice Lonnie Carland with a Cheque for $2000 to fund his upcoming participation on a Rotary visit to Fiji to construct housing for underprivileged local residents Building.
c)  Following a very enjoyable BBQ dinner provided by the Surf Club  Steve Jewson and “Mr Pig“ gave a very entertaining overview of their Surf Club and Surf Life Saving in general

• The Jan Juc club is somewhat different to other local surf lifesaving clubs in the way they engage their members from the local community.
• The Clubs’ Nipper Program has some 300 supporters of whom only about 4 come from outside the local area
• There are some 160 regular participants in the Surf Ed Training program which in itself creates its own logistical problems to provide 8 x 1.5 hour sessions for each participant
• 13 year olds are able to commence patrolling once they have gained their Surf Rescue Certificate
• Jan Juc bucks the national trend where the average retention of members after they complete their “Bronze” at age of 15 is only 4% Jan Juc retains 40-50%
• Jan Juc pride themselves in providing pathways for their young members
• Some years ago they removed parents from their roles as Age Group Managers and Age Assistants giving those positions instead to 15-20 of the young qualified members.
• Interestingly of 44 fully trained guards in Victoria 22 on them come from Jan Juc SLSC
• 18 Jan Juc members have continued on to study and qualify in Health Industry careers
Demonstrating just how the lifestyle has developed their lives.
• Each Life Saver is required to do 30 hours of beach patrol each Summer season and a minimum of 16 hours is required to qualify to compete in events.
• With so many members active in competition Jan Juc does not face the shortage of patrollers that some clubs do.
• The culture within Jan Juc SLSC is very healthy and this club does more than just patrol our local beaches , they are active in building good responsible citizens and role models within our community.
• This is clearly a result of a culture in the club that has seen one member Ken Isaac who has been patrolling for 44 years!

At the conclusion of the evening President Jeanette was able to make a presentation of a $1,000 to the Surf Club.

What a great night of fun and fellowship

The Rotary Foundation – Foundation Month November 2013

In 1917 RI President Arch Klumph initiated the establishment of an endowment fund with the purpose of “Doing Good in the World”, and in 1928 this fund was renamed The Rotary Foundation and became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

From the first donation of $26.60 in 1917 the support of the Foundation has grown tremendously with contributions totalling more than US$1 billion.

The Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s charity, is a not-for-profit corporation supported by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation. It has as its mission “to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty”

From 1985 until the present, the eradication of Polio has been and remains Rotary’s top philanthropic priority. We are “this close” and we must continue the fight.

Past Rotary International President John Kenny has said “For if we fail now, we fail all those who have gone before us, and every child to whom we made a promise. If we fail we risk our own good name, and the good name of all the Rotarians who came before us”

The new Rotary Foundation grants program of District and Global Grants offer clubs and districts the opportunities to address immediate needs in our communities and abroad, and/or participate in large scale international humanitarian and educational projects aligned with the six areas of focus.

It is proposed that the Torquay Rotary Club will access these grants to support the forthcoming International project.

The ongoing support of The Rotary Foundation by Rotarians and Rotary clubs is essential to  make possible Foundation grant-funded projects that bring sustainable improvements to communities in need , and to continue “Doing Good in the World”

A Taste of East Timor

I am scheduled to make a presentation about my recent trip at a Club meeting on 7th April but here is early taste for those of you who just can’t wait.

As most of you are aware I ventured forth into the land of the sleeping crocodile in the last week of February.  Why on earth would you do that you might well ask?  Those of you with better long term memory skills than I have, may  recall that late last year there was some mention at Club meetings of our Rotary Club becoming involved as a partner with East Warrnambool Rotary Club in an off-shore project.  When the chance came up to join the recce team I just couldn’t pass it up.  In my experience, first hand exposure to the actual project is far more informative that relying on the interpretations of others.

Here are some photos that will help you understand the current state of disrepair of the buildings in question No – the building on the left is not a farm shed; it is the main school building!

Would you let your children use a toilet block that looks like this?

Yes there is much work to be done to resolve lots of building issues at the school.  Now before you throw your hands in the air and start to panic, take a deep breath and try to relax!  We are not in this alone!

There are a number of partners who want to be involved in this project.  They include the Rotary Clubs of Torquay, East Warrnambool, Ascot (Perth WA), Water East Timor (an organisation that provides sanitation and clean drinking water to villages) and a philanthropic organisation in Sydney.  The school community also have buy-in to the project and will provide much of the unskilled labour force.  The combined resources of these five organisations have the capability of greatly enhancing the educational experience of hundreds if not thousands of small children in this part of the world.

Now before I finish up there is one more thing that I would like to share with you.

In our society we grumble if even one pothole appears in a road let alone a major highway and is not repaired within a few days.  Well check this out!  This is a section of their Highway number 1.That’s all for now – more on 7th April.  Happy to talk to anyone about this before the.

The morning was well spent with the opportunity of meeting some hitherto unknown business men and women, as well as conversing with others well known in Torquay.

Guest Speaker Sarah Henderson MP delivered an outstanding speech and readily answered the many questions that were put to her.

A morning certainly well spent.

Sincerely,

At the October Board meeting it was agreed that our Rotary Club would support the efforts of the Warrnambool East Club in a school refurbishment project in Timor Leste.  Some information regarding this proposal was provided on the dining tables at a recent Club meeting.  I know I forget stuff from time to time so just in case you missed it last time the following synopsis is provided.

The school is located in a place called Letefoho which is one of the larger villages, in the District of Ermera with a population around 20,000.  It is 70 kms from Dili, East Timor's capital and 20 kms from Gleno the next largest centre in the District.  Not large distances by Australian standards but given the road conditions in East Timor travel can take hours to transverse a short distance.

This senior school currently has 261 students across years 10 to 12 and is the only local option for 5 feeder schools in the District.  Students who do not access this school need to travel to Gleno or Dili to attend classes at this level.

Letefoho Senior School has a staff of 9, however only 2 are trained teachers.  The other 7 are assistants or volunteers.  They have little formal teacher training, mostly learning their skills on the job, under the supervision of the trained staff.  Often they have only completed primary or junior high school themselves. University courses for teacher training are conducted in Portuguese, as it is the official language of East Timor.  This further limits availability of trained staff as a large proportion of the population no longer understands or speaks Portuguese.

Teaching resources and training are limited.  Text books are supplied by the government but staff lack simple teaching materials such as chalk.  Many students don't have paper and pens.  Some can't afford the uniform USD $6.  Others are unable to attend as their families can't afford the monthly fee of USD $3.00.

Here are some photos of the school buildings.

Image

Image Buildings in Disrepair Image

Current toilet facilities

Many students lack adequate writing materials and re-use one exercise book by rubbing out previous lessons.

It is anticipated that at this stage the project may include repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure and provision of a clean water supply both for human consumption and sanitation.  Other matter for consideration may also include provision of school supplies for both teachers and students, scholarships to assist poorer families with both uniforms and fees and provision of sporting equipment.

The reality is that this school lacks basic amenities and materials that Australian students take for granted every school day.

A recce trip is planned for possibly February 2014 with an initial work team visit in August.  As the project unfolds I will pass on information at Club meetings.

Imagine a world without factory farming…

Image Image

On Monday night our own Gail Chrisfield spoke to inform us about the Make It Possible campaign to free animals from factory farming.  She eloquently outlined her reasons for being a vegetarian and challenged us to consider using organic, free range foods. Her presentation included a video to illustrate the conditions of chickens and pigs under factory farming conditions.

All animals deserve a life free from abuse. Whether a beloved family pet, or a nameless farm animal — all cherish joy, and fear violence. Animals Australia’s major campaigns target the most prolific offenders of animal cruelty.

The Make it Possible campaign asks us to sign a pledge, donate and inspire others.  Factory farmers don't want you to know that most eggs, chicken and pork products come from factory farms. They realise that the products they produce wouldn't sell if shoppers were told exactly where they came from. Knowledge is the single greatest threat to factory farming.

For more detailed facts please go to the web site.

Here is a picture of Trevor in formal dress which, after 8 years of training and finally grading for Black Belt I get to wear this formal garment called a Hakama - it was made to measure in Japan and sent over for me.
There is a long ancestry/history to this garment which makes interesting reading if one Googles - hakama. or simply CLICK HERE

Ok we are away! I would like to thank the all directors for their input at our meeting on Monday night and know that it was much appreciated by our members. The insight into their projections for the up and coming year will be invaluable for giving us all the necessary direction required to have a successful year including fellowship and fundraising.

The next meeting on the 1st of July is about fundraising, setting timelines, establishing projects and the like. I would like to remind all to have already in their mind which Avenue of Service best suits their own agenda as the directors are eagerly awaiting so as they can move on with the projects that we are going to support this year and in turn know what fundraising is required for them.

There will be projects that possibly will not require financing but instead volunteer hours to manage the outcomes. As a club these hours will be recorded so that we do know what our true value is in all that we do.

Also let’s not forget to invite friends and like minded people to our Speakers night on the 8th, ensuring that you book in as per our normal arrangements. This night will be more of a social night.

I think that is enough for now so have a good weekend and see you on Monday

Report Synopsis

International Service Portfolio

The goals and aspirations of this portfolio for the 2013’14 Rotary year will be to:

  • Progress with an overseas project;
The Club set up a future fund for this purpose in the 2011/12 Rotary year with an initial deposit of $5,000.  Since then a second deposit of $5,000 was made in the 2012/13 Rotary year.  The third and final deposit will be made at the end of the 2013/14 Rotary year bringing the total to $15,000.  The intention is that the $15,000 will be used for an international project during the 2014/15 Rotary year.  To that end it is planned to seek interest in a combined project with another D9780 Rotary Club.
  • Send a RAWCS work team overseas to work on an existing project;
The Club has sent RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) or FAIM (Fourth Avenue in Motion) teams overseas in previous years to work on RAWCS projects.  This has not happened for some years.  The trip will cover a period of about a week to ten days and is likely to be in a South Pacific country during the dry season.  This year it is proposed that a 3rd year apprentice from the building trades in the Torquay area be sponsored to accompany the team.  Sponsorship will cover airfares and accommodation.
  • Progress the concept of a Club to Club Friendship Exchange:
Further develop the concept of a Club to Club Friendship Exchange with the Rotary Club of Torquay in the UK for 2014.  This will involve a small team of our fellow Club members.  Some interest has already been shown but there is still time to be part of this experience.  Watch this space.

District Conference has finished for another year. Congratulations to District Governor Helen Trigg and her team from the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove, for what was an very informative conference. There were inspiring and challenging speakers, a number of very encouraging presentations from the New Generations of Rotary, presentation of awards, some good education on Rotary International and its procedures and of course the chance to let our hair down and party on Saturday Night.

Our own Rotary Club of Torquay was well represented in attendance and also as contributors  District and Conference. Howard Randall and Chris Sims were both awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from DG Helen for their services to the District. and Mary Elliott flew the flag high for Organ Donation. Mary's segment during the final Sunday session of the conference was an absolute highlight as heart recipient Aaron Hapgood had the audience totally captivated with his frank and honest account of his life changing experience of organ donation..........well done Mary as you approach your milestone 80th birthday, you are an inspiration to us all.

I encourage all of you to make the effort to get to next years conference in Bordertown you will not be disappointed.

In partnership with JR Borja Hospital (The City Hospital), Interplast re-commenced its annual general plastic and reconstructive surgery program to Cagayan de Oro in August 2014, thanks to the funding made available by Rotary District 9780.  The seven person Interplast volunteer team consisted of 2 surgeons, 3 anaesthetists and 2 nurses, and during this program they were able to consult 82 patients, with 72 patients receiving surgery.

This trip celebrated the 15th year of Interplast delivering programs in Cagayan de Oro. The team reported that the program ran extremely smoothly and successfully, acknowledging the support of our new partner hospital and their commitment to the program. Furthermore, the logistical support provided by the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro (in particular Mr Francisco B. Sarraga and Luigi F. Sarraga) as well as Dr Dietmar Schug from the German Doctors Association was invaluable, and Interplast are extremely grateful for their assistance and dedication. Interplast are also very grateful to the support of Mayor Oscar Moreno and the City Government of Cagayan de Oro.

Thank you to the Rotary District 9780 as without your generous support, this program would not have been able to happen. Interplast looks forward to continuing our longstanding relationship with Rotary Clubs in Australia & New Zealand in promoting our work and implementing our life changing and life saving programs

3.2 Case studies (one of three case studies published in this report)

During this program the Interplast team were fortunate enough to operate on three brothers (pictured next page) on the same day. Jeffrey (3 years old), Jekli (5 years old) and Rene (7years old) live in Bukidnon, 5 hours away. They all had cleft lips and palate and were referred by a local parish priest who contacted a Rotarian. Their parents are labourers on a farm and earn about $2.50 a day.
Their father stated they could never afford these operations and he felt that the cleft in his boys were due to his pregnant wife having to work very hard days as a labourer even late into her pregnancy. The two older boys go to school and are both in the same class in Grade 1. The brothers said that they are bullied a lot, and all three wish to grow up to be teachers. With their cleft lips and palate this may not have been possible, but now that they have all had surgery, they may achieve their ambitions of becoming teachers.

Torquay Football Club is holding a "Before the Game" function on 20th July 11.30 - 2.00pm at the Torquay Football Club Rooms before the Torquay v Anglesea "Rivalry Round"

Tickets are $50/head and include Gate Entry, Speakers & Light Lunch. Drinks will be at Bar Prices.

If any Rotarians are interested in attending please contact Graeme Kennedy on 0417324874

Graeme is hoping to put a table together and will handle the bookings

Friends,

Please put a note in your diary to attend our next concert at the Torquay Uniting Church supporting Africa Clean Stoves.

WHEN:  Sunday 16 June at 2 pm

WHERE:  Torquay Uniting Church, 27 Anderson Street

COST:  $20 adult, children under 14 free (afternoon tea included). Pay at the door.

WHY: It will be a fun afternoon in a warm, friendly environment.

SUPPORTING:  Africa Clean Stoves

Kelly Auty (vocalist) is accompanied by Boris Conley (keyboard). They will play a mixed repertoire – French, Blues, Gospel and Jazz.

The Africa Clean Stoves project aims to gradually replace wood and charcoal burning cook stoves with clean stoves that burn pellets made from waste biomass. Working with St John’s University of Tanzania and Hearts for Africa, the project will:

·         Reduce the health problems associated with smoke from burning wood and charcoal – respiratory disease (the second greatest killer after HIV/AIDS), eye problems and burns.

·         Reduce deforestation caused by chopping down trees and hence reduce world climate change.

·         Reduce poverty by providing a cheaper fuel for cooking.

·         Reduce the burning of waste biomass which creates smoke and impacts world climate change.

·         Develop an industry that will provide jobs and help the local economy.

The Rotary Club of Torquay recognised the hard work of two of its members last Friday night

One of the final responsibilities for retiring President Peter Bollen was to recognise Rotarians Darrel Brewin and Rob Harris as Paul Harris Fellows.

The presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognition is The Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs. It is named after our founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905.

Darrel Brewin who is well known for his work as Chairman of the Surf Coast “Relay for Life” event is a Past President of the Rotary Club and has been heavily involved in organising the Club Golf Day fundraiser.

Rob Harris, also a Past President of the club was momentarily left speechless following his recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow. Rob has been a Rotarian for 30 years at four different Clubs in Tasmania and Victoria.

Rob later said that “this was one of the proudest moments in his life….and that of the four clubs he had been a member of, his time at the Torquay Rotary Club had been his most enjoyable”

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
  • REMEMBER on "Partners Nights" it is assumed that you partner IS attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence on travel is not an excuse.  It must be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book”.

Presidents Report

Gerard McNamara

Congratulations to Trevor Pickles

What a great achievement for Trevor who recently achieved his Black Belt in Aiki Jujutsu. Now this is not a bad effort at his age (lets just call him "over 60") and the oldest bloke in his Jujutsu club to boot!

In accordance with the Rotary Club of Torquay Inc. Rules and Bylaws nominations for Board positions are to be called for at the Club meeting one month prior to the scheduled Annual Meeting.

As that meeting is scheduled for Monday 18th November, the call for nominations will be at the Club meeting on 14th October.

Nominations need to be in writing and are to include the signatures of the nominator, seconder and nominee.  Nomination forms can be obtained from the Club Secretary.

Completed forms need to be received by the Secretary before the start of the meeting on 18th November.

Where two or more nominees exist for a particular position then a ballot will be conducted.  In that case a win will be declared by simple majority of the votes on hand.  The use of proxy votes is specifically precluded in the Rules and bylaws.  Only those members present at the meeting are able to cast votes.

If you require any further information on this process please contact our President-Elect Gerard McNamara.

  • Progress with an overseas project;
  • Send a RAWCS work team overseas to work on an existing project;

District 9780 funds an Interplast trip to the Philippines: Report

The District successfully raised sufficient funds in 2012-14 to fund an Interplast trip this year, and has also earned the right to send a Rotary Observer from the District on such a trip. Interplast have submitted a report on the trip we funded to Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines, extracts of which are included below. The full report is attached. The District is currently searching for an observer from a Rotary Club in our District. An Application form is available by writing to me.
John Oswald, Chairman, Interplast Committee D9780 (john@ossie.net.au)

1. Summary
