Presidents Report

For those who were unable to attend our Club Changeover function last weekend, here is a copy of President Amanda's opening message to the Club.

We all think that Rotary is special – well it certainly is from my point of view, and no doubt many others in this room.
It is a legitimate platform upon which we can share our skills, our time, generosity and fun.  It wouldn’t matter if it was called another name; but we honour the name Rotary because it has a long history of stability, accountability and sustainability, and has the strengths of forward planning, flexibility and Democracy – we can all have our turn at the top…
The fundamental issue is that the members of the Rotary Club of Torquay get more than they give in the process of volunteering.

I saw this timely pic on my beloved Facebook recently:
“Before you complain – have you volunteered yet?

And I posted this one from The Age Insight study:

Neurologically, giving is roughly on par with eating fudge or getting laid.
You will see that nearly everyone in our Club this year has a “gig”. Those that don’t are such for their own good reason.
On not one occasion did anyone refuse or hesitate in their acceptance of their new role.
Each and every member of the club has a special talent and they will be able to apply their skills to their particular portfolio.  Today, and every one of the next 365 days, I thank each of you for taking on these roles.
Thank you for allowing me the “second bite of the Presidency apple”.  It will be a particularly social year, AND, as is the way, whilst we are enjoying ourselves – whether it be cooking a sausage, visiting a Club in a faraway land, enjoying a Nepalese dinner, running ragged at the Motor Show or looking for lost golf balls, someone else, someone who we probably will never meet, will gain benefit.
Congratulations to our new Paul Harris Fellows:
1. Howard Randall (Sapphire)
2. Peter Bollen
3. Mike Reed (Sapphire)

And finally, thank you Gerard for your past year – you have held the Club together and we are stronger for your efforts.  Thank you John, Maggie, Mary and the Wyndham for putting together this lovely brunch.  Such a good idea because you can all now have the afternoon off planning your year!

Congratulations to Gail Chrisfield

Gold for Surf Coast Shire Council's annual report at the Australasian Reporting Awards! For Gail, its author, I guess you could call it the Miles Franklin Award of the annual report world. Well done Gail

The Australasian Reporting Awards were introduced 65 years ago by a group of professional people who were concerned about improving the accountability of  activities of organisations.
The ARA Awards process involves setting Criteria to guide report preparation: holding an annual seminar on how to prepare an effective annual report; and reviewing reports and rewarding organisations that satisfy the Criteria with an Award. Most importantly the people who prepare annual reports are able to receive constructive feedback on what has been well done and what could be done better so they can learn how to improve their next report.
The ARA Awards are not so much a competition, but primarily a benchmarking activity and Organisations that are able to satisfy the ARA criteria to differing extents can receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze Award.

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
  • REMEMBER on "Partners Nights" it is assumed that you partner IS attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence on travel is not an excuse.  It must be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book”.
