Presidents Report 18 November 2023
Hello Members and Friends,
Judy and I spent last week in sub-tropical Norfolk Island soaking up the gorgeous scenery and diving into deep and at times very cruel history.
Our trip was led and organized by last year’s District Governor Kathy Rivett and we joined 17 fellow travelers from Rotary Clubs in Alfredton, Mt Gambier, Deniliquin, Bayside Geelong and Blackheath NSW.
One of the many highlights was a “make up” at the Rotary Club of Norfolk Island. The following is an extract from the club's Facebook page regarding our visit.
“Thursday 9th Nov, we hosted a large group of 18 Rotarians & guests for a BBQ dinner at the Lions Clubhouse at Kingston. Most of our visitors were from the Rotary Club of Alfredton, Victoria, but the group also comprised other Australian clubs and included Past District Governors & Club Presidents.
All in attendance enjoyed an excellent BBQ dinner catered by Jasmine with Peter, Lynlee, Andrew and Ian cooking sausages, rissoles, and chicken kebabs on the BBQ’s.
Following our dessert of apple & rhubarb crumble, those present were enthralled by our Guest Speaker Mary-Lou Corcoran. Mary-Lou recently arrived on Island to take up the position of General Manger, Wave Hospitality Norfolk Island. She recounted her very impressive life journey to the present day where she is looking forward to enjoying work and community here on Norfolk Island. Her background in hospitality is extensive, but her resume includes other professional undertakings including a 4-year term as Mayor of Victor Harbour in South Australia. A very enjoyable evening with many favourable comments from our visitors.”
Next Week’s Meeting
Next Monday 20th November at Kithbrooke Country Club is an important meeting for several reasons. It includes a visit from AG Gillian Morgan (RC Ocean Grove) who will meet with Board members prior to the Club meeting to discuss our Club Health Check and attend our club meeting.
The meeting is also important to all members to be briefed and to discuss what is coming up in the next couple of months and more importantly key activities such as our Book Fair and Motor Show early in the new year.
Congratulations to President Ian Aranyosi (RC Bayside Geelong) who was one five awardees for Volunteers of the Year, sponsored by RC Kardinia. Ian has carried on the great work that PP Maggie Isom for Donate Life, as well as his voluntary work with Amber Community, a not-for-profit organisation contributing to the safety and wellbeing of road users. Ian’s passion for making a difference is a result of the loss of his wife in a serious motor vehicle accident in recent years.
Congratulations and thankyou Ian Aranyosi!

When someone tells you they've experienced violence

Text image reads: How to respond when someone tells you they've experienced violence
Campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence open-up conversations about gender equality, respectful relationships and violence against women. When having these conversations there’s a good chance that someone may share that they’ve experienced or witnessed violence.
Being trusted with a disclosure like this might feel overwhelming, but there are some simple ways you can respond that can make the person feel supported and willing to seek further help.
