President's Report No 1

Welcome one and all to the start of a new Rotary Year!

Congratulations Jan on your year. You should be very proud of the past 12 months leading our club through challenges never experienced before ….. you did an amazing job!

What a great start to the year! Our changeover was an ‘action packed’ event and am pleased to say was enjoyed by most, if not all, of the 84 people in attendance.

Jan had the pleasure of inducting Claire Slocombe and Martin Duke. Darrel Brewin has sponsored and will mentor Claire, Greg Plumridge sponsored and will mentor Martin. Both Darrel and Greg gave an introductory address, introducing our newest members to the club. Welcome aboard Claire and Martin! We look forward to your involvement in our club activities and enjoying spending time with your fellow Rotarians.

After a very successful End Trachoma fund raising effort, Jan presented Bev Close with a certificate of appreciation from the Rotary Club of Torquay for donating her time and material to personally sew 100 toiletry bags to put the toiletry items in, that we were able to purchase and those that were donated.

Jan presented 3 Paul Harris Fellow Recognitions. These people are well deserved recipients of this elite recognition. A huge congratulations goes to Kelly Binyon, Maggie Isom. The 3rd recipient was me. I am extremely grateful, and very ‘moved’ by this PHF Recognition. Having my family all there to witness this presentation made it ‘even more special’ … Thank you so much Jan!

Whilst enjoying the comfort and surrounds of Kithbrooke Park, we were all treated to another lovely meal prepared by our caterers Rodney and Lorraine. Many Thanks go once again to Sullivan’s Catering, and the management and staff of Kithbrooke Park.

I am incredibly honoured to have so many people join our changeover last Sunday afternoon. Having the majority of our club along with their partners. To have Club Presidents, Representatives from Rotary, Lions and Probus Clubs along with distinguished guests, families, and friends …… and to top it all off – something that rarely happens – to have our District Governor John Clue & Heather, Immediate Past District Governor Phil Beasley & Judy and Assistant Governor David Sykes, all join us means so much to me…… words can’t describe how ‘chuffed’ I am.

OK ….. onto our next meeting …… Monday 12th July. We are back at the Lions Village. This meeting will be a ‘Club Assembly’ and I will be discussing the committees you all send me responses to.

I look forward to seeing you all on the 12th.

Thank you for your support, friendship, and trust in me ----

Cheers ------ President Michael

Make-Ups......it's Never Been Easier

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.smiley

You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.laugh

Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.

What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.

To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.

Good Luck with the Challenge and I

Rotary International & District 9780 Info

Shekhar and Rashi Mehta at their home in Kolkata. Rashi painted the picture Mother and Child, behind her.

When I met Shekhar almost 20 years ago, he was busily manning a booth at the Rotary International Convention. His enthusiasm and energy in showcasing his club’s projects were infectious. A project man myself, I was inspired by the work exhibited at the booth. That casual encounter developed into a strong friendship.

Shekhar is a visionary leader. He always sees things others can’t. He envisaged a way to eradicate illiteracy in India by 2025 and designed the TEACH program (which stands for Teacher support, E-learning, Adult literacy, Child development, Happy school). He started the Shelter Kit project that now is in the vanguard of disaster relief in India. His Saving Little Hearts project, which provides heart surgeries to thousands of children, along with the more than 15 eye hospitals he helped establish, which have served hundreds of thousands, speaks to the scope of his dreams.

Ravi Vadlamani

Rotary Club of Guntur, India
2001-02 governor of District 3150

He has an exceptional talent for building teams and driving them to achieve their goals. Shekhar’s programs and ideas may seem larger than life, but he always walks the extra mile to make Rotarians feel at home.

His power of dreaming big is backed up by planning, perseverance, and patience. He’s an excellent communicator who connects with his audience instantly and can motivate people to move mountains. He is also a family man, ably supported by his spouse, Rashi.

Shekhar’s X factor as a leader? Nobody is able to say no to him when he asks for something.
