Presidents Report

Oh my, hasn't she grown! That little ankle-biter has turned into a woman! And what a woman! It was with pleasure and admiration that we heard Von Slater talk to us about her chosen career in Architecture and Construction Management.
Von is a woman working in an historically man's world. She clearly loves what she is doing, and they seem to love her work as she is clearly on an upward trajectory.

It was also a pleasure to have our guests Rhonda Anchen and Vic Pitman-Jones along. Rhonda is particularly interested in the promotion of education for women in the world, and Vic, apart from being President of the Highton-Kardinia Rotary Club is the leader of the Salvation Army in Torquay. He has recently moved to Torquay and says he will be coming more often to get to know us.

I shall see you at Minya Winery - Maggie, John and Gail and the inimitable catering team of Lorraine, Rodney and Mac are putting together a night to remember.

Remember there is no meeting this coming Monday night but on Monday 3 August we shall be catching up with Tony Allan, a veteran heart transplant recipient, representing Donate Life. I shan't be there unfortunately as I will be attending my first Rotary Presidents meeting that night. Please let me know if you have any issues or ideas to table.

Conquering the construction world one tile at a time

Many club members would be well acquainted with last Monday night’s guest speaker, Yvonne Slater, through her parents Mal and Deb. Growing up, Yvonne often attended club events with them, although confessed her last one was more than 10 years ago before she left Torquay to study, travel and pursue a career in managing construction projects.

The latter, which formed the focus of her presentation, may have surprised those who knew Yvonne back then as a teenager in high school. Returning as an adult with almost 10 years work experience under her belt, her transition into a confident, engaging and passionate guest speaker was both impressive and entertaining.

Yvonne spoke about her career as a woman working in construction, traditionally a male-dominated domain. Attracted by the idea of building something from nothing, she studied architecture and construction at university, scoring her first job before graduating and working on the refurbishment of Melbourne’s five-star Crown Towers hotel.

Her next project involved refitting Crown Casino’s gaming area. Yvonne admitted she enjoyed working for a company with the capability, at that time, to spend whatever it took to get the job finished to the company's skyhigh standards. She cited ordering hand-crafted tiles direct from Italy as an example.

This extravagant approach did not, however, apply to her next projects – RMIT’s Design Hub and the William Barak building – but the challenges involved proved equally tempting and ultimately rewarding. After the blood, sweat and tears associated with rendering Barak’s face in glass tiles to make up one side of the new building, the final unveiling made everything worth it.

Yvonne’s most recent two projects involve high rise buildings, her ultimate career objective. She is currently project managing the entire fit-out of a 50+ storey building designed with a leaning tower and located in Melbourne’s docklands. Club members travelling to Melbourne will be able to keep tabs on its progress by keeping an eye out for the huge ProBuild cranes, which were erected only in the last week or so.

It was obvious during Yvonne’s presentation that she loves her work despite the long hours and the many demands, including those associated with being a woman in a man’s world. Dad and Mum are no doubt very proud of all she’s achieved so far (although Dad still apparently believes he knows best when it comes to building things).

An Invocation for the New Year

For those who missed last weeks meeting you missed a great literery creation from Lesley Shedden, her "Invocation for the New Rotary Year" Lesley has kindly provided it for publcation in the Bulletin.

Rotary Invocation for the new Rotary year

As the calendar turns

And another new Rotary year begins

Let us be thankful for our Rotary friends

And the changes our service can bring.

Let us rise to the challenges given

Let us aim to give more to the cause

Let us be a gift to the world and continue to make the world better

Even if no one gives us applause.

Fireside Chats are coming up on Monday 17th August and I am looking for Volunteer Host homes.

Don't be daunted by the task as each host can choose whatever format they prefer for their dinner.

You can either:-

  • Cater the entire meal yourself with guests sharing the costs
  • Have the guests bring different courses of the meal - sharing the work load (no one pays)
  • Outsource the catering and sit back and enjoy the conversation (share the costs)
  • come up with your own ingenious and entertaining plan
So I need some volunteers!
If you are interested please contact me,

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
