Presidents Report

Another busy meeting.  This week we had two visitors who the President omitted to introduce at the start of the meeting.  Fortunately the stand-in sergeant took note of this misdemeanour and acted accordingly.  Our RYLA candidate, Jordan Kelly, spoke to the members about his experiences and took some questions.  Johanna Parker our speaker gave an excellent presentation about her Rotary experiences and the work with which she is currently involved.  More detail about her presentation can be found later in this edition.  We also had reports from a number of members including Amanda and Michael.  I have already mentioned our sergeant for the night, Trevor, who did an excellent job in raising more money for Aquabox during the fines session.

Last Tuesday I chaired a public interest meeting to determine the level of interest in the formation of a new PROBUS Club in Torquay.  All of those attending were interested in membership of the potential new Club.  Those attending the meeting together with emails and phone calls from those unable to attend means that  there are now 33 potential new Probians.  It was resolved at the meeting that the first of two Foundation meetings will be held on the 4th Wednesday of May, i.e. 27th.  It will be a case of watch this space to see how many members we end up with in this new venture.  That's all from me now so I will see you at the meeting on Monday night.

Yours in Rotary Service,

JOHANNA PARKER - HEART SPARKS

Dinner Meeting , Monday 27th  April 2015
Guest Speaker Johanna Parker on “Heart Sparks” – Life Coaching
Johanna recounted  how it is a real privilege to speak to Rotary Clubs because Rotary has been and still is a key influencer in her personal and particularly her business journey .” If Rotary had been a person it would have influenced my life more than any other single person , the media , my peers or….”
Johanna’s Rotary journey began as a young girl attending meetings of the Rotary Club of Warracknabeal with her father Rob , progressed through to being a Rotary D9780 Youth Exchange student to Denmark  in 2001 , and culminated with an ongoing involvement with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award that started in 2005 and continues today with an involvement both as a District Leader and a member of RYLA International leadership teams at the Montreal and Sydney Conventions
Johanna’s early career activities included working in Rural Social Welfare , as a Lifeline Counsellor , as a Street Outreach Worker working with homeless young people (some as young as nine ) , and running workshops with young people identifying core values and decision making.
It was about this time Johanna studied coaching qualifications and became a qualified life coach with international accreditation.
At Heart Sparks the core of Johanna’s work is life coaching . She supports women to build their self confidence , celebrate their uniqueness , reconnect with their true selves and bravely chase their dreams with unashamed authenticity and a unwavering sense of self.
Definitions of life coaching can include affirming life change through the enhancement of self’ and supporting an individual whilst they are achieving a specific personal or professional competence , result or goal. It is more than just counselling , teaching , mentoring , or managing even though it may involve some of those elements .
Johanna  is passionate about Heart Sparks and describes the coaching relationship as being active , supportive , honest , encouraging , and non-judgmental as it takes a persons dreams and visions and forms them into attainable goals.
Johanna is excited to be doing the work that she is most passionate about and her ongoing involvement with Rotary.
If you want to read more about Johanna’s work go to her web site www.heartsparks.com.au

Bollens on Tour

For those  who missed Peter & Cynthias holiday presentation 2 weeks ago here is a brief summary and a few sample pics.

Peter and Cynthia Bollen gave a presentation on their recent trip to Finland and Norway on Monday 20 April. The Bollens left home on 13th February 2015 and were away 5 weeks. They arrived at Helsinki, the capital of Finland after 37 hours in transit. Here they were greeted with temperatures between -6 and -3. After three nights here, they went by train to Rovaniemi which is on the Arctic circle and the official home of Santa for 3 nights.  They then travelled by bus to Kakslauttanen for a night in a glass igloo. From here they travelled further north to Nellim in Finnish Lapland, 6 km from the Russian border where they stayed in the Nellim Wilderness Hotel for 7 nights and went on a dog sled ride, snow mobiling, snow shoeing, visited a reindeer farm, went ice fishing and generally had a great time. They were fortunate enough to witness the magic of the “Northern Lights” while in Nellim.
Nellim Peter and Cynthia then flew to Oslo where they stayed for 2 nights before catching a train to Bergen via Voss. In Bergen they boarded a coastal freighter/passenger ship called the Finnmarken and sailed up the Norwegian coast to Kirkenes and back to Trondheim where they disembarked. Stayed 2 nights here then on to Roros, a UNESCO listed town and then back to Oslo by train and then home.

Ride the Bellarine

As a further update to the great efforts by all Geelong Rotarians in making the Ride the Bellarine possible I know that you will be interested to learn what was achieved in our first attempt event.
  • Unfortunately the forecast atrocious weather conditions cost us any hope of a last week flood of entrants....instead we were given a deluge of rain and a somewhat disappointing field of 230 entrants
  • The profit from the event after expenses was not surprisingly only a modest $500
  • Fundraising and Sponsorship both of entrants and from Rotarians and Rotary Clubs was the good news story. Whilst the funds are still coming in the current total is already in excess of $14,500.
So a huge thank you to all who have contributed to the success of this fundraising event to help to "End Polio".

Can I recommend that you browse the many photos from the event on the Ride the Bellarine Facebook Page

"A U.N. study claims the happiest country in the world is Switzerland. When asked why they're so happy, Swiss people couldn't answer because their hands were counting money and their mouths were full of chocolate." -Conan O'Brien

On a visit to my wife's native England for our honeymoon, we arrived at London's Gatwick Airport. Tania headed for the British passport control line while I, an American, waited in the foreigners' line. When my turn came, the customs officer asked me the purpose of my visit.

"Pleasure," I replied. "I'm on my honeymoon."

The officer looked first to one side of me, then the other. "That's very interesting, sir," he said as he stamped my passport. "Most men bring their wives with them."

A band director was standing outside on a metal ladder during a concert, when a thunderstorm broke out.

Amazingly, he wasn't hit by lightning, but the music was awful - it seems he just wasn't a very good conductor.

Four-year-old Johnny was eating a hot dog when he dropped it on the floor. He quickly picked it up and was about to take another bite when his mom said, "No, Johnny, you can't eat that now it has germs."

Johnny pondered the thought a moment and replied, "Jesus, germs, and Santa Claus - that's all I ever hear about and I haven't seen one of 'em yet!"

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
  • REMEMBER on "Partners Nights" it is assumed that you partner IS attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence on travel is not an excuse.  It must be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book”.
