President's Report No 17
Congratulations to all the supporters of the winning team, the 'Tigers' 🐯🐅and Commiserations to the 'Might Cats'😹💙supporters like me who will have to lick our paws once again and do it all again for next year..!
I do hope you are all keeping well, and the week was productive if nothing else. My garden is looking healthy and the vegies will be great if the wildlife didn't think I grow all these things for them, but I don't mind sharing except when it comes to 'snails' any tips on how to distract them. I won't poison, I have a Cat, I've tried the beer pots that just evaporates and even tried the copper foil strips, all to no avail... help...!!
Maybe I should just go away on a long holiday and let the garden do its own thing which brings me to last week’s meeting where we had our very own Travel Agent/Consultant, Rotarian Paul Moran, giving us an insight to hopefully, a well anticipated holiday or getaway.
I know a lot of us missed out on our trips and cruises away in far off lands and some local of course, but for those of us who are still waiting for our refunds it just makes you a bit wary on planning something else in the near future.
Paul was very forthcoming with how we could possibly get assistance with the refunds and did offer for us to call him at any time and he’d see if he could help. I do hope you took him up on his offer and can now have a better idea on planning for that next trip with the comfort of knowing you're not going to be at a loss and in good hands. He had a lot to offer in the way of trips and getaways and encouraged us to not think twice about booking our next holiday.
As you know we are having our Board Meeting tomorrow night so there will be no Club Meeting, enjoy the night off and hopefully we'll be in a happier place come next week with restrictions being eased off a bit more.
After having such a great and successful 'Lift the Lid' night we are in the process and nearing completion of getting our next big event set up and that's 'Pets on Parade'. There will be some fine tuning and last-minute website touch ups done of course, by the website whiz, Lesley, then we should be ready to start getting those pet photos in and collecting donations.
So, start spreading the word and get snapping everyone and let's see just how much we can raise. My main goal as your President for the year is to raise funds to go towards the 'End Trachoma' project. As you know this is a curable disease (unlike my own eye problems and 1,000's like myself) which affects mostly indigenous people and unfortunately Australia is the only country in the world that this is still prevalent.
A few dollars can go a long way to helping these people save their sight and have a chance to educate themselves by doing simple hygienic things each day such as just washing their faces.
Speaking of donations, don't forget too that you can help sponsor Peter Bollen and join him and his pals, and help him to reach his goal of $1,000. Unfortunately, due to the Covid we can't physically join him and his pals on the 'Walk with Pete' this year, but you can still finish off the "27 for Parkinsons" daily walk challenge.
See the Bulletin for further information on both fundraisers, click on the links and see for yourself how you can help.
Have a great week and until next Monday Nov 2nd where we will be having our annual 'Melbourne Cup Night' that will be run by our own "Head of Fun_raising" Neil Henderson, so don't forget to dress for the occasion, have the chicken hot and the champagne cold, oh and prepare some loose change for the Sweeps..!!
Brownlow Medal competition. You had to pick the best scoring player in each team. Not a very popular competition with only 7 entries. Winner was Tracy Curtis (Neil Henderson's daughter) who scored 225 out of a possible 254. Deb Slater was 2nd and Michael Rogers 3rd. All players donated their small winnings back to the club so the bank account ballooned out by a massive $35!
Grand Final Competitions:
Winner and Margin: NEIL HENDERSON tipped Richmond by 33pts. Wins $46.
1st Goal Kicker: No one came close here but after consulting Sunday's Herald Sun, Hawkins kicked his goal at the 18 minute mark of the second quarter making him the first goal kicker of those players nominated. CARLA EGAN wins $46
Norm Smith Medallist - Dustin Martin: Shared by CARLA EGAN, AMANDA HOUGH and GREG PLUMRIDGE who win $15 each.
The Interplast Committee of Rotary District 9780 is fundraising for Interplast through an online raffle. Funds raised will go directly to Interplast Aust & NZ to support their efforts to develop plastic and reconstructive surgery services in SE Asia and the South Pacific.
1st prize $3500 travel voucher, 2nd prize $1500 travel voucher. Please note these prizes can be taken as cash. There are only 1500 tickets for sale, so your chances of winning are far better than with Tattslotto! And you get to feel good about it!
Changing Futures Through Medical Care And Training
In Australia and New Zealand, we often take it for granted that if we ever need medical care, we will be treated quickly and effectively by highly qualified doctors, nurses, surgeons and other specialists.
But right next door in the Asia Pacific region, a lack of resources combined with limited training means people with repairable conditions are often not treated fast enough or well enough – if they are treated at all.
The numbers are almost impossible to grasp.
An estimated 143 million people each year go without surgical attention they urgently need, according to the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. More than 99 million of those cases are in Asia and Oceania, where Interplast works.
For many conditions, plastic and reconstructive surgery is the only path to a productive and comfortable life.
If a mum or dad is burned in an accident and not treated adequately, scarring can cause the affected limbs to seize up or fuse to other parts of the body. The right surgical procedure can mean the difference between returning to work, or no longer being able to provide for their family.
A child with a cleft lip or facial tumour may be teased so badly that attending school is impossible. Surgery can make the difference between missing out on an education or fulfilling their potential. For those with cleft palates, surgery can mean the difference between being able to eat properly or suffering from malnutrition, and between speaking with ease or living in silence.
When you donate to Interplast, you contribute directly to changing futures today. Your donation will give someone in need the chance to have life-changing surgery, and it will give someone the opportunity to learn new skills that will benefit their community for years to come.

Torquay Rotary Club members have participated in the Parkinson's "WALK IN THE PARK " over many years now to support Peter Bollen and his family
Unfortunately due to COVID we will be unable to join our own Peter Bollen as we have in recent years however we can join forces with Pete who will again be entering the Fundraising Team , "Pete's Pals"
Please help Pete reach the $1,000 fundraising target by sponsoring the team Sponsor Pete's Pals
27 for Parkinsons will replace the traditional A Walk in the Park event, which cannot be held this year due to COVID-19 community restrictions and ongoing uncertainty over when and how people will be able to gather.
The concept of 27forParkinson’s is simple – we want people to get out and move at their own pace and walk 27 times, over 27 days, in October. The time, the location, the distance is up to you – taking into account any COVID-19 restrictions in place.
The event will officially start on 1 October, but you can register and start fundraising now just like Event Ambassador, the State Member for Lara and former Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren (click on the image to play the video)
“COVID-19 has changed the way we live in 2020,” said Parkinson’s Victoria CEO Emma Collin.
“A Parkinson’s diagnosis is life changing, but being resilient, adapting and arming yourself with knowledge is key to living life to the fullest. As is not facing the journey alone.”
27forParkinson’s aims to create a sense of togetherness within a community who understand and support each other. The event will also be an important fundraiser.
“Virtual fundraising events such as 27forParkinson’s are more important than ever, to raise funds for us to continue to provide the enhanced level of support required for those living with Parkinson’s during these challenging times,” she said.
It's not too late to register or support Pete's Pals, visit the event website.
Join us for a virtual night of trivia, fun and a silent auction. Your Zoom link will be sent to the Email you forwarded to the event organiser when you booked*, the afternoon of Friday 30th along with your answer sheet and the silent auction prize details.

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
Whilst we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, our meetings will be held on ZOOM for the time being.
All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.
Club Members and friends also come together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially at the Friday night Happy Hour so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
