President's Report No 43
🌺🌷HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY 🌹💐
I hope all the Mums, Grand Mums’ and furball Mums etc all had a wonderful day. The fun part of my day was spent with my Granddaughters helping me make the traditional scones for morning tea, and afternoon tea depending on how many were left…! how they ever turn out so well beats me after having so many fingers in the pie so to speak, but still we all managed to have a lot of fun baking and a lovely feast of Scones, Jam and Cream in the end…!
I gather that last week was a huge hit with Richard doing his ‘Rotarian behind the Badge’ and had a lot of very interesting stories to tell. It was good too to hear that a number of guests were there too, as I say everyone is welcome. I’m only sorry I missed it. But this week will be different again as we have a very special guest coming along and that is George Carman who is the President of the MAC (Multi Arts Centre) Torquay, to give us a presentation on the current proceedings and future plans for the centre in the months ahead.
Speaking of tomorrow night as you’re aware the ‘Rotary District 9780 Assembly will be launched as from tomorrow night, Monday 10th May at 7.30pm virtually and goes through to the close on Friday 28th May at 7.30pm – 8.30pm LIVE. I have registered but thought I would miss out on the opening night until Greg phoned me to say we can ALL be a part of tomorrow nights opening by just staying put at the meeting and through the ‘Wizardry’ of Lesley Shedden and Greg himself we can ALL see it on the big screen without rushing home.
So don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch this, it is expected to run for less than an hour. Those who are unable to stay for the duration will be able to leave as necessary. Follow the link in the story elsewhere in the Bulletin to see the full program for District Assembly.
Next week I would like to point out that it will be a very important night for ALL members to attend as we are having a ‘very special club meeting’ to discuss the subject of our annual Fees. Everyone has a say in the matter and to be there means you have the opportunity to be a part of the discussion. So, I cannot express enough, the importance of your presence as it is vital on any decisions made and of course the outcome.
During this last week you will have received your email invitation to our annual Club Changeover function which is to be held on Sunday 4th July at Kithbrooke Park. Please note registrations are open until 28th June so please be sure to lock the date in your calendar and to spread the word to all Friends of the Club.
This evening we learned all about our newest member. Richard was born and grew up in Ballarat. He still has family there. As a young person he was involved in many sports and activities including football, cricket, swimming, athletics and Cadets. He used to take his 303 rifle home for cleaning. How times have changed! Richard’s family was a musical one and he learnt and played the piano for many years. He was also involved in the school musicals. First car? A Ford Zephyr 6. (Brings back memories of Z Cars on TV).
Richard has been married to Dianne for 53 years and they have 4 adult children – 3 girls and a boy – plus 10 grandchildren. Their move from Warrnambool was to be closer to their family who now reside here in Torquay.
The Hawker’s first house was in Ballarat and for some unknown reason Richard decided to build a yacht in his lounge room. It was later necessary to remove a window in order to extract the boat. Richard found his vocational calling as a buyer for Myer working his way to a very senior position and introducing importation of goods to the supply chain. He became very experienced in this area, especially with regards to electrical goods.
In 1972 they moved to Warrnambool where they would stay for the next 48 years. The opportunity arose for Richard to purchase his own business “Warehouse Sales” which later expanded with stores opening in other regional centres. Both he and Dianne retired in 2014 and have concentrated on being involved in voluntary work ever since. The Rotary Club of Warrnambool was a major part of Richard’s life. He was inducted in 1980 and held many positions within the club including as President in 1991-92. He was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 1994. The major project of which he is most proud is a cabin in the local caravan park specifically designed as a holiday destination for families from Camp Quality. The Rotary Club and other organisations still support the cabin to this day.
Welcome Richard – and we hope you enjoy the next chapter of your busy life here in Torquay.
We have raised over $100,000 (and counting!) towards the Rotary Club of Belmont's headspace Geelong Social Inclusion Project!
You only have until May 6 to join us, our Community Partners and our Platinum Sponsor - and all those who have donated so far - to raise vital funds to support our community’s young people.
We aim to raise funds which would enable the headspace Social Inclusion Project to be delivered for a further 12 months.
All funds raised will directly support the Social Inclusion Project, a program focusing on early intervention for complex, isolated and hard to engage young people. It is delivered via an outreach-based service, allowing young people to engage in a service where they feel comfortable and safe in discussing their mental health outside of a clinical environment.
Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
