President's Report No 14

Firstly thanks to PP Amanda Hough for filling in for me last week in my absence.

From all reports Flinn Nowsons presentation on his participation in the District "Defying the Drift" was most informative I am sure there are many in the Club who have little or no knowledge of this program, so it has been great to have Jess's son Flinn able to to give us this first hand report on all aspects of the program.
I always find the End Polio updates by Maggie and Trevor highly informative as they have such intimate knowledge of the program going back to their participation in India in 2002 and of course Trevors life long experience as a Polio sufferer  so was disappointed to also miss their presentation which was in conjunction with World

This Monday we have another double event with Cr Rose Hodge PHF  on giving us an update on Surf Coast Shire matters, which could be quite timely given the events of this past week, and it will be the Australian Rotary Health's "Lift the Lid" on mental health Hat Night so I urge you all to wear an outrageous hat and pay the donation to the cause to be in the running for the "Best Hat" award.

I understand that the Motor Show and Book Fair Committees have held meetings this past week so planning is well under way for both of these major Club events. If you would like to be involved on either of these Committees please contact Greg Plumridge (Motorshow) or Rhonda Anchen (Books)

This Friday 19th we have the "Peace of Mind" BBQ followed on Sunday 21st when we will also be at the next Cowrie Market so make sure you have checked you commitments on the latest Events Roster

I look forward to seeing you Monday Night...........Don't forget your hat.

President Trevor

Stories
Chairman's Report

Guest speaker Flinn Nowson – “Defying the Drift” ( away from farming and rural industries)
Summary of Flinn’s notes

Two subjects Flinn enjoyed studying and excelled in were enviro studies and business management. A study in agriculture is a combination of these.  An email from his careers teacher encouraged him to apply to attend the Rotary “D t D” program.
This Rotary program is for year 10 students. It aims to provide guidance in 3 areas, being employment ready, honing communication and presentation skills, increase degrees of personal confidence. This year there were 30 students from our Rotary district who attended.
The course was held at Longernong College, they were taken to 5 agricultural / farming businesses to observe the diversity and complexities within a rural vocation. He was fascinated by the Mt. Zero Olive farm’s opportunistic perspective of up selling and marketing within a struggling farming sector. He can see that a successful business needs resilience, good problem solving techniques and determination.
Flinn will complete a Bachelor of Agribusiness and major in business management, a career path he would never have envisaged were it not for this Rotary initiative.

POLIOMYELITIS (Polio)
Rotary Club of Torquay                                       8/10/2018

Polio is caused by the actions of a virus belonging to the “entero-virus” group which quite commonly infect humans and generally only cause a transitory fever or no symptoms at all. All these viruses enter the body via the mouth, they then multiply in the gut and are excreted in very large numbers in the faeces. The difference with the Polio virus is that it sometimes invades the central nervous system causing the all too familiar limb paralysis.

In only 1 : 1000 cases of infection does the virus infect the CNS, the other 999 patients show no neurological symptoms and recover completely.
In my own case, my older sister Jan brought the virus home from the kindergarten she attended where there were apparently several cases of Polio. Jan had an asymptomatic infection, where as I lost nearly all the use of my left deltoid muscles, my triceps and scapular muscles.

For reasons which are still not clear, sometimes the virus attacks the grey matter of the spinal cord. It can do this anywhere from the brain stem to the mid spinal area. The brain stem is responsible for the control of the respiratory muscles, the cord in the neck region controls the arms and chest muscles and lower down, the chord activates the pelvic and leg muscles.     Of the patients who develop paralysis, over 60% occur in the legs and nearly always only on one side.

Polio is not a painful disease as it only affects the “motor” or muscle innervating neurons, the pain receptors in the posterior horn of the spinal cord are not damaged.

Because Poliovirus is transmitted via the faecal – oral pathway it is more common in countries where sanitation standards are reduced. It is in the 3rd world countries where Polio eradication programs face their greatest challenge but as Maggie will tell you it can also reaps the greatest rewards.
In the early 1950’s the first commercially useful vaccine against polio was developed by grinding up the active virus, dousing it in formalin then injecting it into the muscle of children. This was the “Salk” vaccine and later the “Sabin” vaccine which some older members in the room may remember.
Today we use a live oral vaccine which multiplies in the gut where the body’s defenses build up a lifelong immunity to all 3 strains of Polio.
Here is a world map showing the trouble spots still remaining.

BBQ's....the Roster has been updated

An updated roster has been emailed out that reflects a few swaps that have already taken place.

Please note that to avoid any confusion what was previously known  as the BBQ Roster has now been rebranded as the "Events" Roster. to reflect that it includes things like Night Jar Parking, the Book Show etc.

I have also included the dates for the Cadel Evans race ( we make $50 for each shift so please register under Rotary) and Peace of Mind BBQ in Geelong 19th October 5.pm to 6.30 for which we could do with one more volunteer.

If you make any more swaps please let me know and I will update the roster which can be found in documents in club runner

To see the 2018-19 Events Roster  CLICK HERE

If you do  require to swap a date for any reason you will now need to find someone to do this with yourself. I would suggest that you send the request to Greg who has offered to advertise on a BBQ Roster Trading Post in the bulletin

Drought Relief Fundraising for Farmers

In Australia, farmers are the lifeblood of our country and they are in crisis.  Record breaking heat and lack of rain means farmers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle, and keep crops alive.  Families on the land are suffering and they need our help.  Channel 9 and Rotary Australia have partnered with the National Farmers' Federation, launching an appeal to big business and everyday Australians, so we can provide some emergency relief.  100% of donations goes to the farmers and is tax deductible via Rotary and RAWCS.  Every dollar counts.

The link for the donation page for the project is:

https://donations.rawcs.com.au/17-2018-19

The RAWCS website home page has the link also:

My sincere appreciation goes to DGN Philip Archer and his team from District 9800 for making this possible!

Kind regards

Gina

Blues Train Social Night
OK folks...... here's a opportunity not to be missed!
If you enjoy great live music, shakin' your tail feather, a few drinks on a Rockin' steam train and have not done the Blues Train before then you have seriously missed one of lifes MUST DO experiences.

We have secured a booking for 52 people, which will give us our own full carriage, on Saturday 3rd November.

The cost is $118/head which includes a buffet dinner at the Queenscliff Station prior to departure, but  you will need to purchase your own drinks at stops along the journey and there is NO BYO.

Ok so it’s not a cheap gig but it will be a guaranteed fun night and while we are having fun we will be helping our Farmers in NEED……This event is a fundraiser with the proceeds of the group booking discount of approx. $1,000 going to the Rotary Drought Relief fund.

CLICK HERE to see just how the evening rolls and to view the artists playing on 3rd Nov CLICK HERE

As seats are strictly limited, bookings will be on a "First in - First Paid" arrangement. In the first instance please advise Treasurer John McDonald, by msg on 0405146443 or email, of your booking but once the 52 seats are booked if you haven't paid your money then you may get "Bumped" off by someone who pays up ahead of you.

You are welcome to invite "Friends of Rotary" but remember we are limited to 52 in the carriage....so be quick!

Payments may be made by
  1. EFT into the Club Bank A/C BSB 633 000  A/C 149717803 (please use "BTrain + your surname" as the reference
  2. Via EFTPOS at an upcoming Rotary meeting
We will look at running the bus again, as we did for the Wilbur Night, with Multiple Pick-up points which will most probably work out at $50/head return. Please advise John of your interest in this when you book.

If you're still not convinced then take a look below at what happened the last time some Torquay Rotarians hit The Blues Train.....
