President's Report No 43

Monday 30th April
Football fans were delighted with our guest speaker, John Birt, this week. John is a two-time Premiership Player with Essendon, a Dual Best and Fairest winner, former Senior Coach, Football Administrator, School Teacher and Cancer Survivor. He gave us a great insight into the world of Footy.

Working Bee for Books
This was cancelled for Friday due to expected rain. Michael Reed will reschedule soon.

Ride the Bellarine
I have had a notification from the chair, John Paton, that the operating surplus to date is about $11,000 – which will mean each club will receive about $700 for Polio Plus. With personal donations from Clubs the total is expected to be around $20,000. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will pay 2:1, making a total of $60,000.
The funds from all 4 Ride the Bellarine events will total about $360,000, the equivalent of 600,000 doses of polio vaccine.
This has been such a great fundraiser so it is very sad to hear that our Rotary group will not be continuing with this event in the future.

Relay for Life
The total from the Surf coast Relay for Life was $91,174. A sterling effort!

District Changeover
The changeover from DG Ray Herbert to DG elect Anthony Ohlson will take place in Maryborough on 27th May, commencing at 11.30am. Registrations are now open at $50 per head.

Our Club Changeover
Our changeover lunch will be held on 3rd June at Pako Raw in Geelong. Please make sure you have this in your diaries. More details soon.

Saturday 5th May

We had a great celebration at Bellbrae Winery on Saturday night with more than 80 attendees. The whole Club can be proud of it's achievements these past 20 years.  Thanks to Maggie and her team for organising the night and special thanks to Steph Reed for a wonderful job compiling the 30th Anniversary Album on very short notice. If you have not yet received your copy please contact Michael Reed or Maggie Isom.

Monday 7th May
Please note there will be NO MEETING on the 7th as we will all be attending the Anniversary Celebration on the 5th May in lieu.

Monday 14th May
This will be a relaxed evening hearing form Gerard McNamara about his adventure to the Antarctic

Chairman's Report

Last week our guest speaker was former VFL footballer and club administrator John Birt.

A highly respected and decorated sportsman he served as a player, coach and administrator at seven senior football  clubs, a majority of which achieved Premierships during his tenure.

John is a very modest person who did not dwell on his significant achievements but spoke in broad terms about a number of topics, observations and highlights experienced during his long career.

Born and bred in Ballarat, John came to play VFL football at Essendon from 1957 to 1967 in 194 games, kicked 303 goals, played in 4 grand finals, won 2 premierships, 3 best and fairest awards including one in 1965 which was a premiership year, represented Victoria in State football 11 times and never played a game in the reserves.

During his career he received 73 Brownlow Medal Votes and in 2002 was named as number 21 of the 25 Champions of the Essendon Football Club. In 2017 he was made a life member of the AFL.

By profession John is a secondary school teacher and after coaching  at West Torrens, Essendon, Footscray and Hawthorn he became an administrator at Fitzroy, Brisbane and Collingwood Football Clubs.

Regards,

Bruce Smith

Mary Elliott

A picture is worth a thousand words, and this picture tells the story of Mary Elliott, a person who passionately campaigned for as long as I can remember, both locally and throughout District 9780, to save lives with Organ Donation, spreading the Donate Life message whenever she could. Mary is pictured here with one of her most loved local organ donation recipient testimonials, Aaron Hapgood.

Sadly today in the shadow of her recent 85th Birthday celebration Mary lost her own battle with ill health and has passed on from this life.

Mary's enthusiasm and energy for Rotary was an inspiration to us all, she will be sadly missed and remembered always

Funeral details will be advised by email from Maggie as soon as they are available, given that we do not have a meeting this week.

  • You will receive a reminder email on the Friday Prior
  • You will have until Midnight Sunday to register your RSVP and can change your decision right up until the closing time.
  • You can register up to 5 guests
  • You can specify any Special Dietary requirements
  • Please Note that if you do not register your intentions you will be charged for the dinner fee.
