President's Report No 35
Good Evening one and all,
I trust you are all in better health than myself… I have been struck down with the dreaded lurgy so unfortunately and very disappointedly won’t be able to attend tomorrow night’s very special evening. But I know you will still enjoy the night without my presence and my germs…!
I would like to firstly say, Congratulations Maggie on recently being appointed on the District Rotary Foundation Committee. This is a huge step and big shoes to fill as Maggie will be stepping in for our dear PDG Chris Sims. Although I have no doubt that Maggie already knows all there is to know about all things Rotary Foundation, Chris’s mentorship and knowledge was and still is of such great value to many a member within the club.
Michele Van Liessum who is visiting us tomorrow night is of course the Fundraising Chair of Rotary Foundation District 9780 and also a good friend to many of us in the Club, and I’m sure will do a very interesting presentation and acknowledgement of PDG Chris Sims, it should prove to a very informative evening.
This, as you are or should be aware the last week before the launch of the R100 Baton Relay on this Sunday coming 21st March at 9.am. I do hope you will come down to join in the celebrations and see me off with the Baton in one hand and a tight grip on the Biker who’s taking me to Barwon Heads on the back of a Harley Davidson where I’ll be handing over the baton for the next leg of the relay. The start is on the beach side in front of Front Beach Café where we will ceremoniously walk with the baton to our destination at the ‘Rob Emmett Playground’, where there will be a photo shoot opportunity, say a few words then depart promptly at 10.am for Barwon Heads. I’ll look forward to seeing you all there on Sunday.
But don’t forget we will continue at the Christ Church Geelong, (see Invitation) where you can all join in the celebrations that follow where the Three Batons will be welcomed at 3pm, (grounds open at 2.30pm) The afternoon will be a social one, entertainment by none other than the ‘Shy Guys’, BYO everything Picnic Lunch and some formal words…
We have been invited to the open day of the MAC (Multi Arts Centre) which is a performance and gallery space coming soon to Torquay. The Open Day is to show the community and promote what the changes will be to the former Surf Coast Sports & Recreation Centre (Torquay Rotary used to have it’s first meetings in one of the smaller rooms there…!) There will be further information on this to follow. But I encourage you to go along and have a look see, the date is Saturday 27th March at 10.am – 4.30pm. There will a number of stalls, one of which, we hope, will be a Rotary Club of Torquay stall where we will promote our club activities, possibly have some home-made goodies that we can sell too…! Maybe you would like to come along and volunteer for a shift on the stall and help us promote just what our Club does for the Community. Oh and of course you will be able to join in at the Writer’s Workshop where our very own local author of children’s books, Gail Crisfield, will be holding a Children’s Story Time, followed by an interview and Q&A’s… Sounds like a great, entertaining and fun day to be involved in.
That’s it from me, I’m off to wallow in my own self pity and have a stiff drink of Honey & Lemon…!!

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
As some of you experienced, we had a very successful , fun face to face meeting back at the Lions Village and then with the most recent short lockdown we went back to ZOOM !
So depending on the restrictions and as we agreed at the AGM last year we hope to have face to meetings as well as a few social meetings - to ensure we continue with our important Rotary social connections.
