President’s Report 27 April 2024

Hello Members and Friends

Vale’ Ian Cairns

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of our esteemed member and friend Ian Cairns on the 22nd of April 2024. Ian passed away at his home in Mt Duneed. We extend our sincere condolences to Mary Bowman, Ian’s partner of many years who is a member of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak and to his children Joshua, Nicole and Alexandra.

Ian joined Rotary Club of Warrnambool in1997 and transferred to the Rotary Club of Torquay in 2023 having been encouraged and recruited by our very own Richard Hawker to join us at Torquay.

Ian was well known in the Warrnambool community and had undertaken many roles within Rotary including Sargeant, Major Fundraising Committee member, and on Committees for each Avenue of Service. His most memorable contribution was establishing and running the Father of the Year event where the many of primary and secondary students from schools in and around Warrnambool submitted their nominations for father or father figure of the year. Ian led this process for many years and consulted with schools and others and organised the big morning breakfast to announce the winner. This was a mammoth undertaking which he did with great skill.

As you are aware, Ian has spent the last few years battling cancer which had taken quite a toll on his strength and had prevented him from spending as much time as he would have liked with us at RCoT.

I was talking to him a few weeks ago and he was looking forward to his annual “Nungers” Golf Trip to Rich River which he attended. As you can see it’s quite a group of blokes in this photo posted on April 19th by Ian.

Ian’s funeral will be in Melbourne at Heidelberg Golf Club most likely next Friday 3rd May or the following Monday 6th May. I will email the details as soon as I know them.

RIP Ian Cairns PHF

ANZAC Day 2024 – Lest We Forget

Thankyou each of our thirteen members who braved the chilly 5am start and attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Pt Danger to join with Torquay Lions and Red Cross, to prepare and serve a sausage in bread and a coffee to our community, at the Gunfire Breakfast. Thank you to Richard Hawker for the rostering and logistical support.

I was honoured to place a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of our club along with the Torquay Lions and Probus.

Say No to Family Violence

I am sure you are as shocked and stunned as I am with the recent deaths of 4 women due to the violent actions of a male perpetrator. While governments at all levels, police and welfare agencies attempt to find a way to prevent this violence occurring, we can do more!

Linda Neale and Gail Birchell have organised a number of community walks during May, to create a greater level of community awareness and start some conversations. Please see further information in this Bulletin.

Please consider wearing you SNTFV ‘T’ shirts to our social evening this coming Monday night and to our meetings at Kithbrooke.

Community Service

Cowrie Market – Sunday 21st April

Thank you to our volunteers for your time and efforts on the day. The final takings for the day were $872. Not the busiest of markets but at least trade was steady across lunch time.

ANZAC DAY Dawn Service – Thursday 25th April

This year’s Anzac Day Dawn Service saw a return to a “pre-covid” style of commemorative service. Torquay RSL are to be congratulated on what was, by all accounts, a moving service. The weather was kind to us on the day as the only light rain was just prior to and after the event. Our role on the day was to assist Torquay Lions in preparing the food for the Gun Fire Breakfast and distributing programs. Crowd numbers were very high for the service and it seemed like many took the opportunity to enjoy a sausage and coffee after the service was complete. Thank you to our 14 members who helped out on the day.

BBQ Rosters:

Bunnings “Mother’s Day Community Night” – Thursday 9th May 5.30 pm – 8.00 pm
  •  Garth Symington, Richard Hawker, Bruce Turner, Margaret McPherson.

  • Week 3 - 21st May - will be through the Gilbert Street area, including Bristol Road and Bell Street area. The commencement point will be decided the week before.
  • Week 4 - 28th May meeting at 1000am will be around the Jan Juc area. We will decide on a starting point the week before - maybe for those who are fit enough we could include the steps!!
If you have a purple Say No to Domestic Violence T-Shirt please wear it. If you don't have one then, could you please wear a purple top. There may be a spare SNDV top. Gail Birchall will have any spare tops for the first 2 walks. If you have a top but won't be walking, could you possibly loan them to someone who is walking? Thank you.

Riding to End Polio

Last week I was delighted to attend the event organised by Geelong West Rotary in support of Joyce and Phil Ogden who are cycling 3000 kms to raise awareness and funds for End Polio.

Two years ago, Joyce and Phil, who are members of the Rotary Club of South Launceston, rose a tandem bicycle 3,000km from Perth to Adelaide across the Nullabor.  Their efforts raised $38,000 for End Polio.
Currently, they are riding a similar distance from Adelaide to Sydney and dropped into Geelong to catch up with local Rotarians. They spoke to a group of around 50 Rotarians about their efforts, the ride and the challenges and were presented with cheques of $3000 from Geelong West Rotary and $1500 from Corio Bay Rotary.
