President's Report No 9
Good Evening Everyone,
Tomorrow night is looking to be a busy one and an interesting one.
Unfortunately last week some of us had a really bad problem with Internet connection as well as our guests from India, Ajith Singh and guest, their excuse was probably monsoon season, ours was probably good old Telstra Internet failure, fingers crossed that this coming Monday will be a whole lot better..!
The Board and I will be having a Board Meeting prior to the Club Meeting at which the DG Phillip Beasley will attend and will continue to join us throughout our Club Meeting.
We will start the evening with the Induction of our new member, Allan Hillgrove, my first and hopefully not the last induction during my President year. I do hope you will all attend this momentous occasion and join me in raising your glass to offer a toast to Allan and make him very welcome along with his partner, Kerri, to the club.
This will follow with DG Phil talking to us on his goals for the year for District 9780 and to generally catch up with you as members. He will also be accompanied by, Judy Beasley (Rotary Club of Bayside) who will give a brief presentation on her involvement and how we can get involved, with ‘Literacy for Indigenous communities’ which is going to be celebrated on Wednesday 2nd September and World Literacy day is actually on Tuesday 8th September.
The Bulletin is a great source of information on what is happening now and what we can expect to happen in the near future, there is always something of interest to either read or click on to a link to watch and listen to various videos and speakers.
Short but sweet this week, looking forward to a good turnout tomorrow night, in the meantime…
During Basic Education & Literacy month, here is an opportunity for Torquay Rotary Club
to support DG Phil & Judy’s Project of increasing literacy in remote indigenous communities
Our support will help provide books and literacy programs to over 400 remote Indigenous communities across Australia, where they are needed most.
We have an invitation to attend the national, virtual Youtube Live Premiere event at 12.30pm on Wednesday 2 September for a celebration of Indigenous language and literacy. In previous years, this celebration has taken place at Sydney Opera House with children from remote communities, local schools, ILF ambassadors and supporters. This year, due to COVID-19, it is open for the first time to everyone - Australia-wide!

Rotary can help close the literacy gap
When you teach somebody how to read, they have that for a lifetime. It ripples through the community, one by one.”
A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives her the drink she says, " I'm on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it's today. " > The bartender says, " Well, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me. " > As the woman finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, " I would like to buy you a drink, too. " > The old woman says, " Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water. " > " Coming up, " says the bartender. > As she finishes that drink, the man to her left says, " I would like to buy you one, too. " > The old woman says, " Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water. " > " Coming right up, " the bartender says. As he gives her the drink, he says, " Ma'am, I'm dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water? " > The old woman replies, " Sonny, when you're my age, you've learned how to hold your liquor. Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue. "

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken."
She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef.
Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.
The next day in class, my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.
I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most.
The first woman to be nominated to be President, and in the same year our own Past District Governor Jessie Harman on the Board of Rotary International and DGN Kathy Rivett.

Jones will officially become president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge her.
Jones is founder and President of Media Street Productions Inc., an award-winning media company in Windsor. Everyone who joined in on Monday 10th August heard Catherine Eagleson speak about joining the Clue Detective puzzle Agency and then joined in for some fun solving a puzzle together !!
For those who missed out you can relive the experience VIEW MEETING HERE
As Catherine explained solving puzzles is great activity and a real health benefit during COVID lockdown at the same time contributing to Lift the Lid , Mental health research and raising funds for the Torquay Rotary Club.
For only $59.95 annual subscription / just $5 a month, you can have fun with puzzles at the same time contributing to the Club's 2020 fundraising efforts . This is just one good idea for fund raising when we are are limited in our normal fundraising efforts such as BBQs , Bunnings etc
I would sincerely encourage you to join the puzzles and ask friends and family to join as well -
If we could as a Club sell a number of memberships , we could make a big difference our fundraising

Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
Whilst we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, our meetings will be held on ZOOM for the time being.
All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.
Club Members and friends also come together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially at the Friday night Happy Hour so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
