President's Report No 13
G’Day fellow Rotarians,
I trust you have all had a great week and not frozen your butts off in the freezing blast of weather we’ve been subjected to, although we can’t complain about today, a bit fresh but a lovely day all the same. I was able to venture out for a great walk with my family ‘bubble’ for a couple of hours and feel good for it.
Unfortunately I was unable to make it to last weeks meeting however I believe James Carter life story was truly remarkable.
You are aware that there will ‘No Meeting’ tomorrow night as I with the Board of Directors will be having a Board Meeting from 5.30 – 7pm and we have a ‘lot’ to talk about. We of course will advise you of any updates and information in due course.
Hopefully, you all would have seen the article on our upcoming ‘Major’ event and that is the:
‘Lift the Lid Crazy Hat Day’ on Monday 10th October
of course, this will be a Virtual event as everything else is these days, but it will be a great event none the less. All details are on the Facebook page as well as in the Bulletin on how to enter.
All funds raised will go to Australian Rotary Health who is the largest Independent funders of mental health research in Australia.
We can’t as a club fundraise by holding our usual events and BBQ’s as you know under the current COVID restrictions……So we NEED YOUR HELP!
Donation/Entries are from $5 per pic and prizes will be awarded to the winning entry in each of the following categories:
1. Best Handcrafted Hat
2. Most Outrageous Hat
3. Best “Lift the Lid” Themed Hat
4. Best Pet Hat (winner receives a Torquay Toys gift voucher)
Last year our Club donated $4,000 to AHR and we hope to match that figure again in 2020
Get creative and enter your crazy hat in the Torquay Rotary Lift the Lid on Mental Illness Crazy Hat competition. We are raising money for mental health research this October and hope you will help us and have some fun along the way.
Almost one in five Australians will experience a mental illness every year, and nearly half of the population (45%) will experience a mental illness at some stage in their lives.
Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is a National mental health fundraising and awareness initiative of Australian Rotary Health, that aims to raise funds for mental health research and ultimately improve the lives of all Australians.
You will find all the details you need on our Lift the lid on mental illness with crazy hats page including how to enter and donate, the categories for your hats and more. When you enter you will also be invited to our Crazy Hats Night on 12 October.
Torquay Rotary Club members have participated in the Parkinson's "WALK IN THE PARK " over many years now to support Peter Bollen and his family
Unfortunately due to COVID we will be unable to join our own Peter Bollen as we have in recent years however we can join forces with Pete who will again be entering the Fundraising Team , "Pete's Pals"
Please help Pete reach the $1,000 fundraising target by sponsoring the team Sponsor Pete's Pals
27 for Parkinsons will replace the traditional A Walk in the Park event, which cannot be held this year due to COVID-19 community restrictions and ongoing uncertainty over when and how people will be able to gather.
The concept of 27forParkinson’s is simple – we want people to get out and move at their own pace and walk 27 times, over 27 days, in October. The time, the location, the distance is up to you – taking into account any COVID-19 restrictions in place.
The event will officially start on 1 October, but you can register and start fundraising now just like Event Ambassador, the State Member for Lara and former Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren (click on the image to play the video)
“COVID-19 has changed the way we live in 2020,” said Parkinson’s Victoria CEO Emma Collin.
“A Parkinson’s diagnosis is life changing, but being resilient, adapting and arming yourself with knowledge is key to living life to the fullest. As is not facing the journey alone.”
27forParkinson’s aims to create a sense of togetherness within a community who understand and support each other. The event will also be an important fundraiser.
“Virtual fundraising events such as 27forParkinson’s are more important than ever, to raise funds for us to continue to provide the enhanced level of support required for those living with Parkinson’s during these challenging times,” she said.
To register or support a friend or family member taking part, visit the event website.
Everyone who joined in on Monday 10th August heard Catherine Eagleson speak about joining the Clue Detective puzzle Agency and then joined in for some fun solving a puzzle together !!
For those who missed out you can relive the experience VIEW MEETING HERE
As Catherine explained solving puzzles is great activity and a real health benefit during COVID lockdown at the same time contributing to Lift the Lid , Mental health research and raising funds for the Torquay Rotary Club.
For only $59.95 annual subscription / just $5 a month, you can have fun with puzzles at the same time contributing to the Club's 2020 fundraising efforts . This is just one good idea for fund raising when we are are limited in our normal fundraising efforts such as BBQs , Bunnings etc
I would sincerely encourage you to join the puzzles and ask friends and family to join as well -
If we could as a Club sell a number of memberships , we could make a big difference our fundraising
Torquay Rotary are now meeting online every Monday (excluding public holidays and the last Monday of every month when a Board Meeting will be held instead ) at 7:00pm. All Members are invited to participate and we have resumed a program including Guest speakers and some fun activities.
Visitors and Guests are very welcome. If you would like to join us please
Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
Whilst we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, our meetings will be held on ZOOM for the time being.
All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.
Club Members and friends also come together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially at the Friday night Happy Hour so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
