Presidents Report

Last week was interesting.  It was a night of updates.  Trevor Pickles did a great job chairing the meeting and Rob Harris managed to fleece us of some of our cash during the fines session.  We all learned a few acronyms and those that didn't paid the penalty at the fine box.  We were all brought up to date about the creation of the new Torquay Zeally Bay Probus Club that will meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month at the Torquay Improvement Association Hall in Price Street.  As they say, from little things big things grow.  In fact there has recently been some agitation for the creation of yet another Probus Club meeting on a Monday, but that is a whole other story.
Our "new recruit" Alan Anderson told all about his past lives before moving to the surf coast.  As a result of the information that he provided we will all get to know about the Rotarian behind the badge a little better.
This coming week we will have a presentation from the Operation Newstart crew and present them with the Club's donation for this year.
That's all from me this week - see you on Monday night!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Gerard McNamara
President
Rotary Club of Torquay

The Man Behind the Badge

Torquay Rotary Guest Speaker  Report
Alan Anderson PDG
On Monday evening we were entertained with a presentation from Alan Anderson, Past District Governor.
Born in Camberwell in 1943 Alan’s family moved to Lilydale when he was 12 months old where he spent his early life. He graduated from RMIT with a Graduate Diploma in Applied Chemistry in 1966 and married Dorothy in 1967. He also completed a Degree in Business Management in 1977.
Alan worked in a number of positions in Australia as well as spending several years overseas including Canada and the UK. He eventually started his own business, Polymer Consulting, in 1997, fully retiring in 2014
Alan was first inducted into the Rotary Club of Eltham, District 9790, back in 1999 and served in a number of Directorships including Vocational and Club Service eventually taking on the role of Club President for the year 2004-05.
He has been heavily involved in a number of important Rotary projects and eventually became District Governor 2010 – 2011.
Alan and Dorothy recently, and with some sadness, resigned for the Rotary Club of Eltham following their decision to move to Torquay. However, with the negatives come the positives, and we are very fortunate that Alan will be continuing his involvement with Rotary becoming a Member of our Torquay Club.
Those who witnessed his PowerPoint presentation on Monday evening will realise that Alan will be a valuable Member of our Club and we look forward to his, and Dorothy’s, contributions in the future which may include some colourful presentations from their overseas adventures.
Chairman Trevor Pickles

HELP REQUIRED

BlinkyBulb: an initiative of our Rotary District 9780 to help people recycle mercury containing fluorescent tubes and CFL globes.

Rotary Water & Environment Committee and Highlands Regional Waste Management Group developed the BlinkyBulb project to “Preserve Planet Earth”.

The aim of the project is to set up collection points for householders to have access to convenient, safe and cost-free disposal of their used fluorescent tubes/globes.

Collection points have been established, at local businesses and council centres. In Torquay the collection point is Faggs Mitre 10 Hardware.

Until this year Rachael Adami co-ordinated the Project in Torquay on behalf of our Club, ably assisted cannot run the project on here own. If you are able, please volunteer by contacting Darrel Brewin on 0417 185 071.

 by Mary Elliott.

As Rachael has now left our Club, we need a volunteer to take Rachael’s place as co-ordinator. Mary is keen to continue but she

The BlinkyBulb project does not accept fluoro tubes from commercial sources.

There are now a number of participating regional waste management groups in Western Victoria including Desert Fringe, Central Murray and Barwon. The media partner is Win TV.

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
  • REMEMBER on "Partners Nights" it is assumed that you partner IS attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence on travel is not an excuse.  It must be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book”.
