President's Report No 12
Salutations my friends,
I would like to start off by saying ‘Congratulations’ to Mike Reed’s Mum who turned ‘80’ just last week..! well done on reaching such a significant milestone and we all wish her well and please pass on our best wishes, Mike.
This week saw us being able to gather in small groups of 5 in outdoor settings, of which I was invited to a small gathering to celebrate my neighbours’ arrival of 2 grandbabies. She hasn’t been able to see either as they live in Melbourne, so it’s been hard for her.
I too will look forward to seeing my Granddaughters during the week, I have missed them so, but at least I can. I know there are those of you who still cannot see yours due to the lockdown, but hopefully it won’t be too much longer, and we can all see our friends and families again face to face.
With the numbers being so good in Regional Victoria it’s looking more promising on being able to get together face to face for that cake ‘n’ coffee date but it all takes time and as we all know it’s always better to hasten slowly..!
We have a special guest tomorrow night by the name of James Carter, who has been a Rotarian for 40 yrs. He has an interesting story to tell about being illiterate and was diagnosed with Dyslexia so tune in to ‘Zoom ’and look forward to an enjoyable presentation.
Don’t forget to start on those ‘crazy’ hats or any hat will do, but we have ‘Mental Health Week’ coming up very soon, in October, and our club will be running and judging the annual competition of best ‘Virtual Crazy Hat Comp’ on Monday 12th Oct.
Although we will not be able to join Peter Bollen this year at the annual "Walk in the Park" for Parkinsons, due to COVID, there will instead be a Parkinson’s’ 27 Day Walking Challenge - See the article below in this Bulletin to see how to fundraise and walk for the "Pete’s Pals" Team.
Next week, 28th Sept, will be a ‘club free’ night as the Board will be having it’s monthly Board Meeting… so, enjoy the break and we’ll see you the following week with, perhaps, bigger smiles on everyone’s faces due to more restrictions being lifted.
You're invited by the Rotary Club of Kardinia to hear from Sarah Henderson @ 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Ms Henderson is an Australian politician and former journalist. She has been a Senator for Victoria since September 2019, representing the Liberal Party. She previously held the Division of Corangamite in the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019.
This event is a fundraiser sponsored by the Kardinia Rotary Club and all proceeds will go towards the club continuing to support Indigenous Nursing Scholarships.
Australian Rotary Health provides scholarships for medical and nursing students to undertake placements at a rural and remote health care service. Students experience what these facilities have to offer and provide an incentive for recipients to pursue a career in rural Australia upon graduation. The National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research Innovation (NIKERI) Institute at Deakin enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians the flexibility to access higher education while maintaining their family, work and community commitments.
To book please contact President Henry Brockman at henrybrockman@bigpond.com or Secretary Geoff Caddy at geoffandbron@tpg.com.au and they can add you to the meeting attendees list.

Lets get together & support Australian Rotary Health - having fun at the same !time .
It will replace the traditional A Walk in the Park event, which cannot be held this year due to COVID-19 community restrictions and ongoing uncertainty over when and how people will be able to gather.
The concept of 27forParkinson’s is simple – we want people to get out and move at their own pace and walk 27 times, over 27 days, in October. The time, the location, the distance is up to you – taking into account any COVID-19 restrictions in place.
The event will officially start on 1 October, but you can register and start fundraising now just like Event Ambassador, the State Member for Lara and former Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren (click on the image to play the video)
“COVID-19 has changed the way we live in 2020,” said Parkinson’s Victoria CEO Emma Collin.
“A Parkinson’s diagnosis is life changing, but being resilient, adapting and arming yourself with knowledge is key to living life to the fullest. As is not facing the journey alone.”
27forParkinson’s aims to create a sense of togetherness within a community who understand and support each other. The event will also be an important fundraiser.
“Virtual fundraising events such as 27forParkinson’s are more important than ever, to raise funds for us to continue to provide the enhanced level of support required for those living with Parkinson’s during these challenging times,” she said.
To register or support a friend or family member taking part, visit the event website.
Unfortunately due to COVID we will be unable to join our own Peter Bollen as we have in recent years however we can join forces with Pete who will again be entering a Fundraising Team , "Pete's Pals" Please help Pete reach the $1,000 fundraising target by sponsoring the team Sponsor Pete's Pals
Everyone who joined in on Monday 10th August heard Catherine Eagleson speak about joining the Clue Detective puzzle Agency and then joined in for some fun solving a puzzle together !!
For those who missed out you can relive the experience VIEW MEETING HERE
As Catherine explained solving puzzles is great activity and a real health benefit during COVID lockdown at the same time contributing to Lift the Lid , Mental health research and raising funds for the Torquay Rotary Club.
For only $59.95 annual subscription / just $5 a month, you can have fun with puzzles at the same time contributing to the Club's 2020 fundraising efforts . This is just one good idea for fund raising when we are are limited in our normal fundraising efforts such as BBQs , Bunnings etc
I would sincerely encourage you to join the puzzles and ask friends and family to join as well -
If we could as a Club sell a number of memberships , we could make a big difference our fundraising
Torquay Rotary are now meeting online every Monday (excluding public holidays and the last Monday of every month when a Board Meeting will be held instead ) at 7:00pm. All Members are invited to participate and we have resumed a program including Guest speakers and some fun activities.
Visitors and Guests are very welcome. If you would like to join us please
Here's a challenge for everyone...….in these "different" times in which we are living there are more and more Clubs now holding on-line meetings so now it's easier than it's ever been to do a make-up.
You can do them from the comfort of your own home and you don't even have to get dressed up.
Let's have a club challenge to see who can do a make up form the most interesting city. Be sure to grab a screen shot of your meeting and send to me for the bulletin.
What a great way to meet other Rotarians from around the world and to find out how they are living through the COVID-19 lockdowns.
To make it easy the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley in WA have begun compiling a list of Clubs who are now holding On-Line Meetings to view the list click the link below.
Whilst we all are dealing with the COVID 19 Virus and the restrictions this has placed on our Club Meetings and all of us personally, our meetings will be held on ZOOM for the time being.
All details for how to log into the Zoom Meetings can be found in the article elsewhere in the Bulletin, on the Club Website & Facebook pages. remember that Guests are also available.
Club Members and friends also come together over the airwaves to meet and chat socially at the Friday night Happy Hour so I hope you can join in & enjoy the connection
