President's Report No 10

My apologies for missing last Mondays Meeting although I believe President Elect Kelly Binyon did a great job holding the fort.
I was disappointed to miss out on hearing Sam Dharmapala's presentation

We have been informed that Grovedale Rotary Club have decided to reschedule their Dinner-Dance-Auction until 22nd Feb. So we will have more time to save up our money. We will provide more details as it gets closer.

I believe that Celebrations were in order for Lois Gill who celebrated her Birthday during the week and looked just a little embarrassed during the acknowledgment with the singing of Happy Birthday last week.

We have Club Assembly Monday with the opportunity to make some plans for the up coming projects and events. We will also be inducting Neil Henderson as a member of the Club.

So I look forward to seeing you then
President Trevor
Stories
Chairman's Report

SPEAKER ON 10th SEPTEMBER 2018: SAM DHARMAPALA – Modern Day Slavery
What inspirational people Sam Dharmapala and his wife, Dr Mindy Gill, are! They run a fantastic program to rehabilitate young women who have been freed from slavery in the Philippines, and provide them with work.
San started his talk by reminding us what modern day slavery looks like. There are 40.30 million slaves in the world today and 71% are females.
Slavery includes:
  • Debt Bondage/Bonded Labour
  • Contract Slavery
  • Worst forms of child labour
  • Sex trafficking
  • Forced or servile marriage
  • Domestic servitude
  • Child soldiers
Mindy (daughter of Graham and Lois Gill) completed her medical training in Australia and has worked for some years in the Philippines developing health programs for rescued slaves as well as training to develop core skills to improve self-esteem and help these young women cope. She is also involved in research and her programs have been recognised by the Philippines Government.
Three years ago, Mindy’s husband Sam, left his job in banking and launched a social enterprise, called Regenesys. The vision of this business is to provide not only a genuine career path through enhanced technical skills, but to create a context where survivors can progress towards achieving full and sustained reintegration.
Sam and Mindy have launched using their own money and have now identified certain young workers who would benefit from further external training in order to progress their work skills. This might be an area where Rotary Clubs could support study scholarships.

Drought Relief Fundraising for Farmers

In Australia, farmers are the lifeblood of our country and they are in crisis.  Record breaking heat and lack of rain means farmers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle, and keep crops alive.  Families on the land are suffering and they need our help.  Channel 9 and Rotary Australia have partnered with the National Farmers' Federation, launching an appeal to big business and everyday Australians, so we can provide some emergency relief.  100% of donations goes to the farmers and is tax deductible via Rotary and RAWCS.  Every dollar counts.

The link for the donation page for the project is:

https://donations.rawcs.com.au/17-2018-19

The RAWCS website home page has the link also:

My sincere appreciation goes to DGN Philip Archer and his team from District 9800 for making this possible!

Kind regards

Gina
