After a very busy period for our club, I enjoyed seeing 21 members and guests online on Monday, looking a little more relaxed.
It was great to see and welcome our guests Gerard Hogan and Nick Clift.
A huge Congratulations go to Martin Duke and his wife Catherine, on the safe arrival of their first Grand Child – a Granddaughter Tallulah Mae McKnight. Their daughter Laura and son in-law Kieran are the proud parents of this little bundle of joy. Our very best wishes to you all.
On Monday we caught up on club news through reports.
The Motor Show, as we know was a great success, is still being finalised. The draft figures are showing we will come out with a profit of close to $20,000 ….. absolutely fantastic!
Bruce Turner mentioned the battery recycling program could change in the near future, with Supermarkets and similar venues committing to a collection/recycling program. If this goes ahead, Bruce said we may be able to use our Battery Collection Recycling Cylinders in other venues. Bruce will keep us updated as information comes through.
The drop off place for our Lids4Kids collection has been at John McDonalds place.
Unfortunately, some lovely members of the public decided to put their ‘dog litter’ in the collection bin.
This resulted in a lot of unnecessary cleaning for both the lids and human hands!
The bin has now been removed from John’s place.
Coles Supermarket in Torquay have a Lid Collection bin – so please can everyone take their unwanted lids to Coles.
Many Thanks to John McDonald for the use of his house, washing machine and home facilities for not only the collection but the sorting and packing of the lids over recent months.
A big Thank you to Maggie for coordinating this program, the working bees and dropping off of the packaged bags of lids.
Last Sunday we had a fair demand on our BBQ resources.
The Cowrie Market was on – and was a huge success. There were some late withdrawals with members unable to attend.
Mal was able to call his wife Debbie, to join them and help out ---- Thanks for stepping in Deb, this is very much appreciated.
There were two ‘quick dashes’ up to the shops for more supplies due to the very busy day.
Thanks Team ….. Well Done!
Then there was the Tiger Drop Martin Duke, David Mitchell and I did.
The Tiger Drop is the major fundraiser for the Torquay Football Club, Netball Club and Cricket Club.
The three of us had a very enjoyable day …. And was a heap more relaxing than the Cowrie Market, selling around 50 sausages for the day.
For those who have not seen this event – the clubs sell 1000 tickets. Each number is written on a golf ball – and the golf balls are dropped from a helicopter hovering over the oval. Quite a sight to see. The three winners are the balls that land closest to the pin (a flag on a pole) on the oval.
We did get good community exposure, appreciation, and publicity from being there.
On Monday afternoon, I represented the club at an afternoon tea with Stephanie Asher, our member for Corangamite, and Sussan Ley – Minister for the Environment. The time was spent discussing the local environment, the need to protect it, vegetation, and the need to recycle as much as possible.
Tuesday evening was the debrief of the Motor Show. Greg collected and collated all the comments and suggestions submitted to him.
These were all discussed and noted – thank you to all who took time to make comments.
The Motor Show Committee will commence meetings and planning for the 2023 Motor Show early in the new Rotary Year.
Clean Up Australia Day is on the 6th of March. Please see the article elsewhere in this bulletin. Rhonda Anchen for information, how you can help and participate.
Greg Plumridge mentioned the Strathewin School, we have been supporting since the devastating Black Saturday fires.
Although the Black Saturday fires were some years ago now – I’m sure many of us can still remember them. The horrific trauma experienced by this community is still there.
It is so good we can do a little for them and give them a day on the beach. The students, teachers and adults who come down for the day really look forward to it each year – and the smiles on their faces say it all.
The day is planned for Thursday 31st March. Please note this day – if you are able to help, further details will come as plans are confirmed.
With spaces at our District Conference filling fast ….. jump online (if you haven’t already) and register if you wish to join us in Port Fairy.
See you at Kithbooke Park …. Face 2 Face on Monday for our Wine Tasting Social Night!
