Report No 9

Fireside Chats
What a great social activity! We had a lovely evening in the company of our Rotary Friends on Monday 28th August. Our group felt that this is a tradition that must be kept up.

Cambodian Adventure
Our club donated to the Global Grant that is providing clean water to Cambodia, so our members are invited to participate in a visit to Cambodia to look at the project in the first two weeks of February 2018.
If you are interested you need to let President Bryan Humphry (RC Geelong East) know before September 30th.

Catering for No-Shows
Every week in the bulletin this message is published:

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.
This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the check in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.
  • An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangement were addressed in the Bulletin).
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the
usual dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

It has been brought to my notice that the club frequently pays for meals for members who do not adhere to this policy so it has been decided that in future you will be issued with an invoice for your meal if you do not apologise before Monday morning, as stated above.

Proposal for EFTPOS Facilities
Please think about whether you would like EFTPOS at our Rotary Club. It would cost us $29 per month plus 1.49% transaction fees. Would you use it?

Busy meeting on 4th September
We will have feedback from the Fireside Chats and a straw poll about EFTPOS. We have a guest speaker, Linden Barry, from East Loddon Food Sharing Inc., but most exciting of all we have three new members to induct.

Stories
Fireside Chats

We the feedback received from The Fireside Chats is that everyone at each of the host venues had a great night

At Binyons

A sensational meal was enjoyed by all and whilst it was a shame that Paul was held up at work and unable to join us, we had a great opportunity to getting to know one of our newest Rotarians, Robyn O'Loughlin and partner Gerard better.

It was also great to catch up with Kelly and Paul's son Liam who recently returned from his Exchange year in Canada.

Present:  Gaynor and Rudi Schols , Michael and Alison Reed , Graham and Lois Gill, Chris and Christine Sims.

  • Weekly Meetings:
General agreement that at the present time  the Lions Village was the preferred venue for the weekly meetings of the Club on Monday evenings.

Agreed that our catering arrangements rated highly and appreciation was expressed for the efforts of Lorraine and her team.

  • Dinner Fees

Noted that despite many reminders some members of the Club still failed to advise of their intention to be an apology at a Club meeting or meetings , and also failed to advise of extra guests and visitors.
Comments that this created issues with additional costs to the Club and extra demands imposed on the Caterer.

  • “Rule of 85”

Discussion on the implications of this legislation and the changes arising from the 2016 Council on Legislation reflected in the Club Rules and Bylaws

  • Fellowship

General agreement that members should ensure that all those attending Club meetings , both Club members and guests , should always be welcomed and made to feel part of the fellowship and hospitality.

Agreed that at all time Club members should avoid the possibility of “cliques’ being allowed to form albeit unintentionally.

At the end of a most enjoyable evening we all expressed our appreciation and special “thank you’s” to Gaynor and Rudi for their hospitality and generosity.

Mock Job Interviews

On Tuesday 29 August & Friday 1st September, Rhonda Anchen were privileged to join with other Grovedale Rotarians to conduct mock interviews with Year 9 students from Grovedale Secondary College.
The Mock interviews are part of Vocational Service organised by Director Richard Mierzejewski.
The purpose of a mock interview is to provide the student with an opportunity to practice their interviewing skills in an environment similar to an actual interview.
We both found this a very worthwhile experience, to hopefully guide these young people on their employment journey.
This opportunity will be available again next year & hopefully more of our Torquay Members will have their Working with Children certificates.

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable
to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.
This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book"
that is available at the check in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.
An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements
  • were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the
  • usual dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this
be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
