Presidents Report No 33

From the President

Happy Birthday everyone

Friday 3 March and Saturday 4 March, Spring Creek Reserve, Torquay
We have a Torquay Rotary Club team and invite you to join the team or at least go online to make a donation.

Report from the Board
Our Board meeting on Monday night covered some wide ranging issues.  Here are some highlights.
Equipment storage shed
Council approval has finally been received for construction of the shed with the Lions Club.  Tenders have been called for based on a final design provided by Rotarian Mal Slater.  We look forward to the construction of this shed to provide safe storage for our BBQ trailer.
Book Fair report from Rhonda Anchen
The 2017 Book Fair once again exceeded expectations during the Australia Day long weekend. Book collections started mid 2016 and steadily continued throughout the year. Gail Birchall offered her house as a drop off point which provided a great location in Torquay. The donations from family and friends were high quality resulting in a great range for customers to choose. Geelong West Rotary provided invaluable support with their books and set up gear. The coordinated work of Torquay Central Probus, volunteers from Diversitat and our own team ensured the efficient setup/pack up and running of the event. Torquay Books provided sponsorship with the donation of brand new books and Hayden's provided sponsorship with the donation of free advertising. Another example of the fabulous work of our club.
Youth Exchange 2017 – 2018
We have expressed interest in again sponsoring an outbound student on exchange.
RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment)
The camp is on 7 – 9 April, 2017 at Adekate Lodge.  Applications close 24 March, 2017. Chris Sims is meeting with Scott Diamond, Surf Coast Secondary College, to discuss possible attendees.
Working With Children Checks
All members are asked to arrange your Working with Children Check, which is a simple, free process done online. You just need to state your check relates to the Rotary Club. Once you receive your card please also provide the details to Linda Neale who is compiling and maintaining the register for us.
BBQ season nearly done
A big thank you to everyone from Community Service Direct Mike Reed for what has been a particularly busy BBQ season, which is almost, but not quite, finished.  Mike has raised the question of the Baines Court BBQs and whether or not we should continue with them next season.  If you have views or input to this discussion please ensure you pass it on to Mike.

District Conference registrations - and we’re doing breakfast on Sunday 2 April
BE Bold and register for the District Conference here. Mike will also be seeking assistance to work on the BBQ on the Sunday morning of the conference as, along with Geelong East Rotary Club, we are providing breakfast to everyone who is attending the hands on project at Geelong Mums.

Chairmans Report - Modewarre Football & Netball Clubs

We welcomed Representatives from the Modewarre Football & Netball Club on Monday night with the Chairman Paul Grossman & the Football President Mick Fitzgerald and the Netball President Jane all speaking briefly about their passion for the local Club.

Modewarre also helped out with a Motor Show by providing people power to assist in Drapers Carpark which helped them earn some funds to go to their Club after parking 80-90 cars on the block.

Mick, a grain buyer, said the Club is more than just a sporting club and it was a place to steer young people in the right direction and was like a small community with over 70% of the local primary school children involved in either football or netball with teams ranging from U9's through to the senior teams where everyone was treated equally.

Jane added that it was a place for everyone to be active and to be involved in a sport and stay active although she was concerned that netball may be losing some numbers to the rapid growth of women's football however Modewarre has long been involved in women's football and was an inaugural competition in the area.

No doubt Paul, Mick & Jane all share the same passion for Modewarre and we wish the best to them and their Club which appears to be headed in the right direction.  Having played a few games at Modewarre over my years at Torquay it was always better to play the downhill direction with the wind behind you than uphill into the breeze.

Go Moda.

Five for February
#FIVE FOR FEBRUARY - MATCHING OFFER EXTENDED

An Umoja supporter is going double or nothing. She's also extended her date to the 7th March to raise $5000.

Donate during #FiveForFebruary and your donation will be matched dollar for dollar.

Help Umoja get to the $5000 finish to make your donation really count.

For the month of February, we are asking you to give us five for Umoja.
Find all your five cent pieces, 50 cent pieces or $5 notes and donate the total at the end of the month.
Invite five friends to donate $5 each or an amount ending in 5.
Vow to give up your coffee for five days during the month and donate the total.
Encourage your Rotary Club or community group to make a donation to Umoja with the number 5 in it.  Own a business? Donate for the day/week/month a percentage with a 5 in it.

That’s right. Mrs Match will donate $5000 if we can raise $5000 together.
Use the hashtag #FiveforFebruary to help spread the word on your Facebook page, and in your donation comments you must mention #FiveforFebruary or Mrs. Match so we can track the progress.

Don't let us miss out on this amazing Family offer of $5000 being matched if we raise $5000 up until the 7th March.  No $5000, no money from Mrs. Match.

Our 2 wonderful long time sponsors Mr. & Mrs. Match live in Queensland.  They wish to remain anonomous.

Feb Fast 2017-  Last chance to sponsor

The "Torquay Alco Free and Fun" Team team is doing febfast 2017.

So why not join in the febfast fun!

You can chose to give up Sugar &/or Alcohol

I've just joined febfast 2018, the 28 day health and wellbeing challenge that raises money for disadvantaged youth in Australia.
I'm doing it as part of the Torquay Rotary Zero Alcohol Maximum Fun Team team, and I'm looking forward to kick-starting 2016
with something a little different.

The reason for my email? Well, many hands make light work and I reckon febfast would be easier (and more fun!) if you joined me.

Amanda Hough and Maggie Isom have already joined the Team........so......

What do you say?

To get involved, click ‘Join This Team’ on our Team Page to register.

If you aren't up for the challenge, it would be great if you could sponsor us by making a donation instead.

Cheers!
Greg (Plugga) Plumridge

PS: want to know more about febfast? Check out their website.

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
