Presidents Report

Another successful  Melbourne Cup eve function.  On behalf of the Club I would like to pass on congratulations to all of those who had a hand in organising such a great night.  It was pleasing to see so many visitors including Peter and Sue Hehir in particular.  The evening had great atmosphere with race callers, a bookie and everyone dressed up in their race day finery.  Congratulations also to those who won the Fashions on the Field events.  Thank you also to PDG Chris Sims for his inspiring presentation on the Rotary Foundation, Rotary's very own charity.  I would like to encourage any of you who have not already done so to sign up with the Relay for Life team.  I am sure that if you contact Maggie she will be delighted to include you in the event.  Remember the Relay for Life event is on 8th & 9th November which means that there will be no Club meeting on 10th.  The following Monday 17th provides all members with the opportunity to visit other Rotary Clubs in the District.  Some members will be attending the RC Belmont 50th Anniversary dinner that night. Now in case you are wondering what the connection with RC Belmont is all about, Belmont chartered Grovedale who in turn chartered Torquay.  Remember our Club Annual General Meeting is on 24th November.  As per the usual custom this meeting will be run by our President Elect Jill Evans.  Following the AGM we will have a Club Assembly at which each of the portfolio Directors will discuss progress in their respective areas of responsibility with their committee members.  That's all from me for now.  I hope you were successful with your punting on Cup Day."

Yours in Rotary Service,

Gerard McNamara
President

Just a reminder that there is no usual meeting at the Lions Village this Monday 10th November due to our Clubs involvement in the Surf Coast Relay for Life.

Also please remember that the following week Monday 17th we will also not be meeting at the Lions Village. Members are encouraged to attend the Belmont Rotary Club's 50th Birthday Celebration  at the Barwon Edge Restaurant. If you are interested in attending please contact Michael Reed who already has 2 tables filled for our Club. Members not attending the Belmont Birthday function are encouraged to do a "Make Up" at another club during that week and give a brief report to our club on their visits on the 24th

Conditions were extreme right from the get go at this years Relay for Life beginning with 34° heat and  strong North wind during the morning set up, then by mid afternoon the wind had turned 180° and the temperature had dropped what seemed like 20°.

By then all of the infrastucture of the event, Team Marquees, Jumping Castle, PA System and Stage had been forced to be dismantled in the interests of safety.

It was going to be impossible to continue to run the event under these conditions, I doubt it would have even been possible to light a candle for for the Candle Ceremony, so at around 5pm with severe weather and rain set to continue into the evening the the organising team made the difficult decision to cancel the event.

It is hoped that at some time and place in the near future the Candle Ceremony will held to at least conclude that moving part of the event.

It was particularly disappointing given all of the work done by the organisers and all of the individual teams in preparation for the event.

Special thanks must go to our Team Captain Maggie Isom who put together our team and base camp and managed to fill all 24 hours with walkers a massive task in what was already a very demanding week for Maggie.

Despite wild weather Saturday walkers did really well . Thanks to the Gill family, Mal Slater,Mary Elliott, Gail Chrisfield, & Karen Bingham, Lesley Shedden, & Robert, Jill Evans, Jenny Oscar,Chris Sims, Rudi & Gaynor Schols, & Lyn Collins & Greg Plumridge for your support

Team Captain Maggie Margie

District 9810 Invitation to District 9780

Rotary District 9810 is hosting its District Conference in Ballarat between the 13th and 15th March 2015. Our District has held a fundraising bike ride every year for the last 28 years and next year we start our ride from District Conference on Sunday 15th and ride 808 ks finishing up in Ballarat on Friday 20th March. The ride leaves from Federation University, Mt Helen Campus, Ballarat (formerly Ballarat University).

The ride is to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health and as I am sure you will appreciate the more riders, the bigger chance of raising more funds. Next year we hope to raise in excess of $40,000 which will get us very close, if not over the $1 million dollars mark, raised for ARH since the inception of the Rides to and from District Conference.

If there are any bike riders in the community or in the Rotary Clubs of District 9780 who may like to join us for the ride and raise funds for ARH on behalf or their own club or on a personal basis, we would love you to join us. All funds raised would be credited by ARH to the individuals or to their own Rotary Club. The ride is open to both Rotarians, their spouses, and any other members of the public who would like to join us.

For further information please read (1) our flyer attached below, (2) for complete information refer to our Web Site found at www.rotaryrideforresearch.com.au, or (3) contact our ride Co-ordinator

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
  • REMEMBER on "Partners Nights" it is assumed that you partner IS attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence on travel is not an excuse.  It must be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book”.
Not all of us were able to make the trek to District Changeover in June, however I am sure that members of our Club would prefer not to have to wait until DG Geoff's Club visit on 6th October to get to know more about him and his vision for District 9780.
........well  thanks to District Media Guru Tony Stewart and modern technology you can hear DG Geoff James acceptance speech by CLICK HERE or follow the link below (Please Note:- you may need to view this bulletin in your web browser to see the link below)
